  • After all the testings, trial and errors, I’m finally able to make my own home made DVDs. I’m now capable of making a DVD of some shows that I’ve TiVo‘ed, or use the video / photos of what I’ve taken with my digital camera, and there’s also all those videos I’ve downloaded from the internet.

In the beginning, I was struggling in creating a DVD that I’m completely satisfied with. I tried to use free or bundled softwares to make a DVD, but the results have always been not to my liking. I finally decided to spend a little more cash to do it right. In the end, it took four specific programs to pull it off. The Adaptec Gamebridge allows me to capture video that did not have those static white noise at the top of the screen, which I saw often in other video capture devices. VideoReDo allowed me to edit my captured video in a very easy and convenient way. Pinnacle System’s Studio 10 is the best encoding program I found to make the captured videos DVD complaint. Finally, DVDlab is the best authoring tool I’ve tried to make my ideal DVDs. Then I used Nero to actually burn the DVD. You can do the math on how much I spent total, but I think it was worth it. I haven’t completely perfected the authoring part (my friend’s DVD player doesn’t play the sound for some reason), but I’ve made great progress.

Right now I have two projects that I’ve done so far.
    1) San Diego Comic-Con 2006 special (2 DVDs)
    2) My recent trip to Catalina island

You’re definitely a happy person, even though you have your down moments.
You tend to get the most out of life, though there’s always some more happiness to be squeezed.
What I’m listening to this week…

  • Doing stuff without the use of my right index finger has been quite an experience, especially since I’m right handed. Let’s see, things different with only four useable right fingers….

Clicking on a PC mouse, typing on a keyboard, taking a bath / shower, brushing my teeth, using chopsticks, combing my hair, writing with a pen, tying my shoelace, miniature golfing, washing the dishes, and carrying / grabbing things in general.

While some of those listed above required more effort, I’m still surprised at how useful my right middle finger has been, in taking over the job of my right index finger.

  • I went to Catalina Island with my friends. I’ve never been there, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The boat ride going there took about 1hr30mins, but it was still a relaxing ride despite how crowded it was. Four of my friends took the top deck of the boat, while I kept my other sea-sicky friend company on the second deck. We just played some cards, and also chatted it up with a family (who had two hot daughters btw) who was sitting next to us. I also got a kahlua with coffee for the heck of it as well.

Upon arrival at Catalina Island, we weren’t able to dock our boat right away because a “competitor boat” was docked in our spot. The captain even kept repeating how the boat was their competitor, which I guess we were suppose to blame for the delay, but we instead joked about how maybe we should have gone with the competitor instead.

The first thing we did was walk the street and find someplace to eat. We found a restaurant at the north end of the main street, right before it got crowded too. Afterwards we opted to ride on those golf cart thingees to tour the resort. We took two separate four seater carts as there were eight of us. My friend drove, while I used my camera for video and pics. My friend was eager to drive like a maniac, but unfortunately for him (and fortunately for us), the cart we had wasn’t really that fast. The roads we took had some awesome hairpin turns up the mountain and what not, so not only did we get a great view of the island, but it was fun and exciting. We went for an hour ride before returning the cart, as we wanted our deposit back. Our other party almost did not make it either, because they got lost on the way back.

We went our separate ways by that point. Five of us went to look for some scuba diving / kayaking action, while I opted for the “glass bottom boat” experience with the parents of my friend (I didn’t want to get wet – flashbacks to legoland). We actually almost did not make our boat, because we were waiting for the wrong boat in the wrong line. Luckily, we still made it, and the boat had enough room for us. Looking at the bottom of the water, seeing the fishes go by was pretty entertaining. I even opted to feed the fishes, so that they would swim underneath our glass window for our enjoyment.

Afterwards, I roamed the area by myself until we meet up for the boat. I took some more video / photos of the place, and just soaked in the island experience. We eventually met up, boarded our boat, and headed back to the main land. It was a fun experience, and I’d love to go back again sometime in the future.

Later that same day, we went to the Tulsa Rib Company, which has some great eats. Unfortunately for me though, I got into a bit of an accident there. When I was sitting at our table, I lifted my chair to sit, and apparently the cushion wasn’t properly stuck to this metal chair. I ended up lifting the cushion as opposed to the chair, and wedged my right index finger between the straight edged metal outline and the cushion, which I pressed down on with the weight of my body. I felt pain at that point, and rushed outside the restaurant to calm the pain. But this was not just some hard pinch on my finger, because the pain never subsided, and I looked down to find lots of blood dripping out of my finger and flowing over my hand. I started feeling queesy from the sight of bloody wound, wobbled inside where my fiancee used a bandage from her purse to cover it. I started feeling very nauseous, got an ice pack, forgo ordering food, and opted to just rest in my car. I drive manual shifting, and thankfully out of the seven of us there, one of my friends can drive stick fluently, so getting home is quite possible. By the time I got back in my home area, I was well enough to drive and what not (you don’t have to use your index finger to drive stick). Unfortunately, by the time I got home, I was craving some of those delicious ribs that I neglected to order to go.

Oh and BTW, I left a good chunk of my fingernail back at the restaurant (hopefully they cleaned it up). Also if you are wondering, I do have a splint on my right index finger, so I am actually typing without the use of that finger. Lots of errors that need correcting, but I’m surprisingly not doing too bad.

  • movies I’ve seen recently…

    The Descent  (2005)  B-

The premise for The Descent is more or less standard fare for a horror film, bring a group of people (in this case, all attractive females) into a dangerous situation and then bring killer monsters into the mix. This movie has those sudden scares, those gory scenes (blood and guts), and the horror of being trapped in a seemingly unescapable cave filled with monsters that want to eat them (even if they are still alive). There are some logical flaws in the characters, the monster, and some of the decisions made, but I didn’t think they took too much away from the enjoyment. There’s also some good subtle character development among the main actresses (Natalie Mendoza and Shauna Macdonald), that helped bring weight to their predicament. Good fun.

    Into The Blue  (2005)  C+

Into The Blue is an action / adventure / thriller, but for most guys it’s “the movie with Jessica Alba in a bikini.” The movie oddly enough has her as second billing, because the main star of this is Paul Walker (so the women has something to look at too I guess). There’s nothing really much to say about this movie, as it’s not exactly a bad movie, but it’s also not exactly a good movie either, it’s just quite average. All the actors did a good job, and the plot chugged along well enough, it just wasn’t anything that special. If there’s one standout; and this is from a guy’s perspective, it’s probably the scenary and the camera work (especially when Jessica Alba and Ashley Scott are present). Insert smiley face here.

  • aarrgghh, I’m getting flashbacks to how my endurance held up at the Comic-Con. Just like then, the past five days or so, I’ve only been giving myself 4-5 hours of sleep a day. It’s really taking a toll on me as I’m fighting to stay awake at work lately. At least I’m now at my second four day weekend, so hopefully I’ll be able to catch up on sleep…. maybe not, because it’s going to be another eventful weekend.

  • You Are Sunrise
You enjoy living a slow, fulfilling life. You enjoy living every moment, no matter how ordinary.
You are a person of reflection and meditation. You start and end every day by looking inward.
Caring and giving, you enjoy making people happy. You’re often cooking for friends or buying them gifts.
All in all, you know how to love life for what it is – not for how it should be.

  • Recently, me and my friends visited LegoLand California. For the longest time now, I’ve been told that LegoLand should only be visited by people with children. They were not lying. This theme park really is geared towards the kiddies, and Adults are usually either just there to accompany kids or to look at cool lego models. In fact I believe we only bothered to get on three rides total with one short “4D” movie, and they were definitely not that exciting.

There were only two really memorable things that we did at the park. The first one is checking out “mini-land” which is very impressive in how they reconstructed iconic locations of the United States of America. The only down side there are the “interactive” functions littered throughout the land (like operating one of the boats / cars) were mostly not working. The second memorable thing was the water balloon fight. I actually objected to this interactive game because I did not want to get wet, and sure enough I was the one who got wet the most. It was fun, but damn did I get wet. I also did win a souveneir basketball by playing a basketball carnival game, so I guess that was something.

I did not bring my main digital-camera, so everything was shot with my camera-phone. For a park that doesn’t really have that much to see, mini-land in itself is very photogenic.
