  • bleah, it looks like I’m having car problems again. The other day, I had to drive through some flying debris at the freeway, and although I actually thought something hit my car, I did not really pay too much attention to it. It looks like I should have because it appears that I am leaking coolant from quite possibly the radiator. The only reason I even noticed this was because my temperature gauge is indicating that my engine is heating up more than it should, and my friend saw the green fluid leaking from the bottom of my car. It looks like my car will be out of commision until Monday night the earliest, because the mechanic isn’t open until Monday morning the earliest. In fact, I may not have my car until Tuesday or later in the week depending on what needs to be done. *sigh* More money I have to spend for my car. I’m also going to call in work for the next two nights; or even three nights, because of this car trouble.

On another note, my friend from the military is home for his leave, and we all got to do our annual tennis match. For the record, my team won against his team this year. hehe *cue Mortal Kombat theme music*

  • movies I’ve seen recently…

    Snakes On A Plane (2006)  C+

Snakes On A Plane” will meet the main
expectations of what it said it would bring. Violent snake attacking
deaths? Check. Samuel L. Jackson kicking butt? Check. Gratuitous sex /
nudity? Check. Some gore & scares? Check. Good fun overall? Check.
Saying all that, the film is still an average movie.

SOAP has most of the cliches you will find in a “plane is in trouble”
movie, except this time Snakes are the cause of the problem. It’s a
movie that was made for fans, but at the same time it takes itself
seriously enough that I don’t really see the camp factor in it. If it
wasn’t for the hype and fan fervor, I wouldn’t even classify the movie
as a cult classic. This is a film you can easily nitpick to death, but
if that’s all you are going to do, then you are definitely not the
    audience for this movie.

I personally enjoyed this movie; wearing my SOAP shirt and all, but I
realize that it’s still average nontheless (maybe a little bit above
average). There were some nice original touches they did with some of
the characters and the plot though, and ofcourse the Snake attacks were
just excellently done (some were very cringe worthy too). Go into this
movie knowing that it’s not the best movie of summer 2006, because
frankly it’s not. As soon as the snakes are let loose on the mutha
f-ing plane though, it becomes a great fun guilty pleasure.

    World Trade Center (2006)  B+

This is probably one of Oliver Stone‘s best movie, and it doesn’t even feel that much like an Oliver Stone film. “World Trade Center” is an emotional roller coaster about the tragedy that is the attack on U.S. soil on Sept 11, 2001. It is visually unrelenting, and you see footage that should haunt you for a very long time. This movie however doesn’t focus on the politics or too much on the details of what happened, because this is actually a rather uplifting look at the tenacity of the good that humanity is able to achieve when it is needed. The main focus is how the event affected the people who were trapped underneath the fallen skyscrapers, the families who don’t know if their love ones have died from the attack, and the people who feel helpless but want to help. All the casts from Nicolas Cage, Michael Pena, Maria Bello, to Maggie Gyllenhaal, all made some powerful performances here. This is most definitely one of the best dramas of the year, and is a great companion piece to United 93. Oliver Stone, you did the United States of America proud.

    Click (2006)  B-

The ads for “Click” would make a person think that the movie is suppose to be a laugh a riot. That’s actually not the case, although there are several genuinely funny moments. This movie overall was actually a very touching tale about a man (Adam Sandler) who is working too hard for his family, but at the same time can’t spend real quality time with them because of work. When a man can’t spend quality time with a wife that looks like Kate Beckinsale, then something is obviously wrong. With the power of the “universal” remote control, he can make life easier, but at what cost? This movie fits in the same concept as “Bruce Almighty” and as far back as “It’s a Wonderful Life.” As this type of movie goes, obvious cliche and plot twists will occur, but the story is so endearing that you shouldn’t care too much about it’s flaws.

    Eight Below (2006)  B+

Eight Below” is one of most touching tales about dogs that I’ve ever seen. While the main human stars of the movie does a serviceable job in their roles, the real stars are the dogs. This film does a great job in showing us how a pack of dogs can survive on their own in the cold climate of Antartica. If it weren’t for the humans on screen, you could almost believe this to be a documentary; a very entertaining one at that. Despite this being a Disney movie, the dogs do not speak or sing or anything like that. However, you can tell just by their actions and mannerism what they are feeling or saying to each other. It’s just such an incredible story overall, and if you are a dog lover, don’t be surprised if your eyes start watering up.

  • I saw the Australian punk rock band “The Living End” at the House of Blues in Anaheim California. It was awesome! I’ve already seen them not too long ago at the Warped Tour in Pomona, but they only had a 30 minute set, while this time around they had over an hour. Before they played, they had two bands open for them, “I hate kate” and “the lashes.” The first band; “I hate kate” was actually not bad at all for a local band. I would have bought their album but it was an EP and I’d rather wait for an LP of theirs…. Unless that was just a short LP. Oh well. The second band “the Lashes,” I thought was just okay, as I thought they were rather generic.

I hardly visit this House of Blues in Anaheim, but I actually am acquainted with the bartenders there. They always ask me when the hell I’m going to go to a concert there again, and now that I have, one of them offered me booze. I got myself a Samuel Adams, and when I was done with that, he gave me another without me even asking. I ended up drinking more alcoholic beverages; including a Long Island Ice Tea, and even ordered a Catfish nugget plate. For all that, he only charged me $5!!! I gave him $10 with the other half being his tip. Maybe I should have just gone and gave him a bigger tip, but oh well. For the longest time that I can remember, I always had a rather great tolerance to alcohol. Now, maybe not so much. I wasn’t completely drunk or anything, but I sure was super buzzed to the point that I think I was drunk and a little bit tipsy. At least I was no where near in danger of passing out or anything embarassing like that.

The Living End started their set at about 10:10PM and ending at roughly 11:20PM. It was a great setlist encompassing several tracks from all their albums, but with a huge emphasis on their self-titled first record and the latest album; “State of Emergency.” They did some improvisation with several of their songs by extending the solo or adding more variations to some portions, and they were all good. Guitarist and lead singer Chris Cheney even played a country music solo; with a cowboy hat and all, and then morphed it into a punk sound. Bass player Scott Owen is once again a monster with his huge bass, twirling it around his body and even playing it while standing or sitting on it. This band always delivers a great live show, and they pretty much played a majority of the key songs I wanted to hear live.

Usually when I’m in a concert, I am totally into the music. You’ll see me bouncing around, head banging, fist shaking, fist pumping, air guitar-ing, not to mention singing loudly along… This concert was no different, although I was a bit disappointed with the crowd around my area of the floor. The crowd around me seemed to be enjoying the show, but they were just standing there…. just listening!!! C’mon people, get into the music or something, that’s what the bands want to see. A visible action indicating that the audience likes their music. If you want to just stand around and listen to a concert, go to a friggin philharmonic orchestra or something! I got to say, the majority of the people sure stayed a few steps away from me, because they must have been thinking I was going to start a mosh pit or something to that nature.

In case you guys wanted to see some pics. Sorry, but the House of Blues does not allow video/audio recording. I didn’t really feel like taking the risk of getting kicked out, so I didn’t attempt to do any recording. Besides, my cellphone camera doesn’t do a great job with pictures in a low lighting environment anyway.

    The Living End, they rock!

  • You Should Be a Science Fiction Writer
Your ideas are very strange, and people often wonder what planet you’re from.
And while you may have some problems being “normal,” you’ll have no problems writing sci-fi.
Whether it’s epic films, important novels, or vivid comics…
Your own little universe could leave an important mark on the world!

  • Last week, I bought the album “something real” by Meg & Dia. This band was the one that I saw at the myspace tent at this year’s Warped Tour. This was also one of the newer bands that I was introduced to through myspace.com. To my surprise, after seven days of getting their debut album, I am still listening to it. Not a single day has pass that I haven’t listened to “something real” at least two to three times a day. I am practically in love with the album, and it’s easily up in my top five favorite albums of the year so far. It’s kind of a nice feeling discovering a new band that I like, not to mention one that is just starting out, have a great debut album, and the two leads (Meg & Dia) are totally hot. Just take a listen to four of their songs in their myspace webpage, you yourself may like them. Wow, I’m just impressed at how fast I became a huge fan of theirs. Here’s hoping I get to see them again in concert, because I’d like to see them live with a fan’s perspective this time around. Meg & Dia, you rock! m/

  • Here you go folks, we’ve got a date for next year (you should know what I’m referring to)…

    September 8, 2007
@ Shilo Inns Suites Hotel – Pomona, CA
    11AM – 4PM event

*edit* Now, if you read this blog post and could have sworn it said August 18 initially, it’s because it did say that. My fiancee’s dad couldn’t have made that date, so we’re moving it back a bit. Ironically enough, Sept 8 was my original choice, but she wanted it a bit earlier. But here we are again back to that date. We actually still need to tell the Shilo Inns Suites Hotel that we are moving back the date (they are closed today), so hopefully I won’t have to make yet another update to this.

  • I went to a party that a friend of mine who I haven’t seen for a year now was throwing. It was great and all, but the one thing that probably stood out to me the most was that I found out he was still using a dial-up service to get online! I wanted to show my friend a youtube video, and it took probably 30 minutes for it to completely load. I was reminded of how slow things were back in the day. I told him that for $17.99 a month, he could be using broadband DSL service. That’s not a bad deal, and he is really considering it now.

This makes me wonder, do you guys know anybody else that still uses dial-up service?
