  • In a few hours from now, as I’m writing this, “The Swell Season” will be performing at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, CA for their second night this week. Unfortunately I won’t be able to make tonight’s concert, but here is my recap from last night’s show…

First off, I’ve been to The Wiltern before, so I won’t be having that feeling of not knowing what to expect from a venue (like how to get there). That’s the thing, I know how to get there, so why did I let the GPS tell me where to go? The directions that the GPS was giving me was far more confusing than what I would have done. Go figure. By the time I parked and got in the venue, opening act “Josh Ritter” started performing already. Before I got in though, I made sure that my camera was okay to bring in (especially considering what happened last time). I asked two different people twice, just to make sure, and I was good to go. First thing I did was check and see if they had a t-shirt I wanted in my size. Nope, sorry, my size was already sold out. Bummer.

At that time I wasn’t sure if I was completely interested in seeing Josh Ritter, and although the little I could hear from outside in the lobby sounded good, I considered just waiting it out. I did however make an attempt to see where my seats were located first, so I knew exactly where to go when I go back in later. When the usher saw my ticket, he was actually surprised that my seat was all the way up front (third row from stage), and I admit that it is pretty cool that I was able to be that close to the stage. I didn’t want to squeeze into my row while the show was going on at that time, so I went back out to the lobby.

BTW, I should mention that there’s one thing that I was a bit surprised about, is that The Wiltern actually had rows of seats to watch the concert. Out of all the concerts I’ve gone to in this venue, it’s always been general admission, standing room alone (unless I was at the balcony). I suppose because this was a more “slower” rock band, it caters more for this kind of setup. Just looking at the audience, I could tell that this wasn’t a crowd that would have enjoyed standing up the whole time anyway. Let’s just say that they looked a lot more “sophisticated” than most concert goers I encounter in other shows. Speaking of the crowd, The Swell Season always happen to bring in very attractive ladies, so that’s nothing for me to complain about.

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova got on stage by themselves by around 9:15PM and immediately played a song; “Fallen From The Sky.” Afterward, the rest of the band showed up, who by the way are also members of Glen’s other band “The Frames.” After a few songs have passed, I was once again immersed in how much I love the music that the Swell Season plays. Glen Hansard also has such a great stage presence, what with the entertainingly stories he tells in between songs (they were either very moving or funny), and how he is able to joke around with the crowd quite effectively. Even when things go a little wrong; like losing a guitar string while performing, Glen is still able to make light of things and keep the entertainment going. I also enjoyed the times Glen encouraged us to sing parts of the songs, and for one particular song, somebody in the audience was recognized for having such an incredible voice and really impressed Glen.

There is a certain format to their set list, where besides having the full band for several songs, Glen and Mar each gets to take the solo spotlight and hold the show by themselves, as well as violinist Colm Mac Con Iomaire who for one portion of the show gave us a lovely instrumental piece. Marketa at one point also brought in a family friend of hers to sing a song in Czech, which was definitely something unexpected but nice to listen to. The biggest surprise of the night was probably when the band brought in “How I Met Your Mother” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” star Jason Segel on stage, where he sang a hilarious original song of his, that was essentially him inviting any of the fans that night to have a booty call with him. The Swell Season’s whole set lasted about two hours and it was so great that I honestly could have stayed for another hour (they have enough material to pull that off if they wanted to).

Last year I said that seeing The Swell Season at the Greek Theater was probably the best concert I experienced in 2008. After this phenomenal show, I’m inclined to now say that seeing The Swell Season at The Wiltern is probably the best concert that I experienced in 2009. You know how people say that they “give 110%,” well The Swell Season really look like they are giving “150%” and it shows in their concerts. Like what I told Glen Hansard to his twitter, their music just puts me to another plane of happiness. Great band, great show, great night.

    - unexpected surge of popularity with this particular video. It’s being passed around on twitter, plus I’ve seen it in websites like “Pop Candy,” “Reuters,” “slashfilm,” “digg,” “SPIN,” “Entertainment Weekly,” and the “Los Angeles Times.” This video has fast become one of my most popular youtube videos, and reached almost 21,000 views in just one day. Incredible.
*update (Nov 20, 2009) * 2 days and 71,418 views later, Jason Segel passes Megan Fox + Kevin Smith as the most viewed video on my youtube!http://twitpic.com/qc8k6
    *another update (Nov 21, 2009) *
In light of the fact that Jason Segel’s song is now my no.1 most viewed video on my youtube (currently at 97,120 views as I type this), I went ahead and called the number. He actually picked up! I’m sure most people who called asked the same thing I did at first… “Is this really Jason Segel?” But then he got to ask “Is this really the guy who uploaded the video on youtube?” Jason said he appreciated all the attention he’s been getting from the video, and asked me to send him the raw file of it, so that he could personally keep a copy of his performance. Really nice and cool guy.

P.S. If you are wondering if I took more videos from the show, I did (14 total). I uploaded the Jason Segel one, because that’s too funny not to. The new untitled song should be uploaded there in my collection as well. Now considering what I said earlier this month, that I was going to abandon my youtube account, those other videos are going to have to sit in my hard drive until I find an adequate alternative to youtube. I’ll toss the occasional video into my youtube account from time to time, but not to the extent that I’ve been known to do.

  • Most recent movies I’ve seen…

    2012  (2009)  C+

It’s been said that “2012” is just a noisy disaster flick that’s all flash and no substance. I can’t fault that statement, because in many ways it’s true. Director / co-writer Roland Emmerich isn’t exactly known for his ability to tell subtle character based dramas, as we look at him for his big summer movie extravaganzas. “2012″ is no different. Sure it has plot holes that question the logic of how this world is going to experience this foretold catastrophic disaster. Yes it relies on movie cliches and coincidences, like our protagonists being able to out run an earthquake, or the obligatory “dog survives disastrous fate” angle. I definitely could have lived without the last moments of crisis in the final act (long movie). THE only reason you should go see this movie is if you want to see spectacular visuals of huge catastrophes like the city of Los Angeles collapsing into the pacific ocean. You keep all these in mind, and you should have a blast enjoying this disaster flick, flaws and all. I did find the more somber moments when the movie shows loved ones saying their good byes to each other, knowing that they will most likely perish, to be very effective scenes. While “2012″ isn’t exactly a movie that is technically considered a great quality film, I still have to give it props for being a great entertaining film.

    The Box  (2009)  B

The thing that I really enjoyed about “The Box” is that despite all the weird things that director / co-writer Richard Kelly shows us, the main thing is that this is primarily a solid morality tale. As a story based on the Twilight zone episode “button, button,” it still has the primary query as to if you are willing to allow somebody you do not know to die, if it means that you will receive a large monetary reward. Kelly takes this concept much further than I expected (definitely much further), and ended up making a very compelling film, that raises a ton of new questions that you will probably be wondering about after you see the film. Some can argue that the mysteries in the movie can be frustrating to watch, because some characters do certain things that seemingly seem out of the blue, and some events that defy explanation just happen… just because. The three primary actors, Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, and Frank Langella are also very good in this, and well worth watching this movie for. “The Box” is overall a solid good movie, but the way the story is told and directed by Richard Kelly may not necessarily be for everyone.

    A Christmas Carol  (2009)  B-

Once again with Disney’s “A Christmas Carol,” director / co-writer Robert Zemeckis is continuing to do another fully CGI-animated film, with the actors being motion captured into their characters. It’s been argued time and time again that there’s just something unnatural about the way Zemeckis’ character designs look (particularly the eyes), and this movie continues that problem. The animated look is sort of like a pseudo-realistic, yet clearly cartoony in nature that it can be off-putting enough to possibly distract from the overall experience of the movie. Thankfully the main character of Ebenezer Scrooge; excellently voice acted by Jim Carrey, was given the most attention in production, as his portrayal completely comes to life here. This adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic is more or less faithful; bar some added action adventure sequences, with all the pathos carried over well to the audience. Any critic to the story, is pretty much criticizing Dickens. That’s the main strength of this movie, the story. It’s a classic, through and through, and Disney’s “A Christmas Carol” is just another entertaining adaptation of it. At least see this for the 3D movie experience.

    Paranormal Activity  (2009)  B

A movie like “Paranormal Activity” relies a lot on the viewer having a good imagination and who also believes in ghosts. If you do not fall into that category, then I’m not sure if this movie is going to be that scary at all. However the one thing that I don’t think can be denied is that this is a very creepy film. The subject matter of a house being haunted, and then actually having footage showing the odd things that happen when the characters are sleeping at night is quite unnerving. Director/Writer Oren Peli does a great job of making everyday things be scary. A bedroom door left open. Bumps in the night. Unknown shadows. All that and more are taken advantage of here in trying to scare you. This movie honestly does not have a lot of jump at you moments, but the feeling of dread of not knowing what’s going to happen at any given moment is the strength of what can make this frightening to watch. The downside here is that the characters are just stupid. If there is physical evidence of a haunting, I would get the hell out of that house. Also, the characters need to understand that when you hear a loud bump in the night, you really should turn on all the lights, and should just drop the camera and at least carry a weapon of some kind if you are going to investigate it. Either than those glaring flaws, I thought “Paranormal Activity” deserves to be a new horror classic.

  • What Greeting Are You?

    You Are “Hello”
You are a somewhat traditional and conservative person. Why mess with what works in life?
You are always polite and appropriate. Upholding social conventions is important to you.

You are calm and levelheaded. Even when someone is rude to you, you can avoid losing your cool.
You are reliable and loyal. You are predictable, but only in the best way. There’s never any bad surprises with you.

What I’m listening to this week…

    1) 1Up Oddcast11/12/2009

    3) The Summer Set – love like this
    4) 3 Inches Of Blood – here waits thy doom
    5) AFI – crash love
    6) Metallica – metallica

P.S. I’m still testing out what exact day I’ll be putting up my weekly blogthings/listening to blog post, between Tuesday, Wednesday (where it’s normally been going to), and Thursday. Tuesdays is looking good to me though, with Wednesday being a secondary choice.

  • This was a relatively uneventful three day weekend for me.
Friday was watching a movie with friends. Eat. Sleep.
    Saturday was shopping. Eat. Sleep.
    Sunday was… Eat. Sleep.
Slept a lot of hours these past days. More than normal.

Did watch several movies on TV though… so that’s something different.

  • It’s kinda weird, but I didn’t realize how many different kinds of fedoras there are. First off, there’s a lot of designs and color schemes out there. Then there’s the fact that even the ones that kinda look the same have differences based on size and what not. Now for no particular reason to explain, I’ve wanted to have my own Fedora for awhile now. Lately, I’ve been thinking about using hats more often (especially considering “that hole” in my head and all). I’ve already got several of those typical baseball caps, and I even have one military style hat, but no Fedora (or drivers cap, or beret, etc…). Well after weeks; nay months, of searching for a fedora that I would be happy to own, I finally found one. I think it’s pretty stylish actually, even with that jack skeleton image on the side, and dare I say that just based on my active imagination, the chicks like it as well. hehe

  • With Call Of Duty : Modern Warfare 2 selling big and breaking the day-one entertainment sales record this week, just about everybody seems to be playing it (even Megan Fox herself mentioned on her twitter that she is playing). Since I did say I’m not getting it yet, I came upon this little game that I thought was pretty fun. So take a break Modern Warfare-ers and spend a few minutes playing some “Miami Shark” from Newgrounds.com (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/513760)

Thanks to the “Good Grief” podcast for the suggestion.

  • What Kind of Book Are You?

You are always willing to lend an ear to a friend with a problem. And you’re even pretty good at giving advice!

Some may accuse you of loving drama, but you just seem to find yourself in the middle of it.
You are a true people person. You find the lives of others to be fascinating. You’re up for hearing anyone’s life story.
