movies i've seen recently...
Bruno (2009) B
To say that "
Bruno" is the gayest movie ever is almost an understatement. There are scenes of naked men, over the top homosexual sex acts, and even an up close shot of a man's private part moving to the beat of a dance tune. A character created by
Sacha Baron Cohen, and directed by
Larry Charles, Bruno really goes out of his way to show the world that he is gay gay gay gay gay. Yes, this movie is definitely not for everybody, because it is pretty much made to offend. At least it does so hilariously. The majority of the time, I was absolutely shocked at the things this movie was able to show on the big screen, and at the same time I was laughing so much at the fact Bruno was able to get away with those scenes. What other movie out there has a scenario where a homosexual man is trying to get politician Ron Paul to have sex with him? What other movie out there was able to get American Idol judge Paula Abdul sit on furniture that is actually a Mexican laborer? That is pretty much the plot of the film, making people feel really really uncomfortable dealing with a man that is so outrageous. It's pretty much almost like a retread of Sacha Baron Cohen's previous film "
Borat," and that is the strength and major flaw of this film, because you can only take that kind of joke so far. Half of the time, I wasn't sure if the people reacting to Bruno's antics were being genuine or were in on the joke. Despite some few complaints and the offensive nature of the whole thing, "Bruno" was definitely entertaining.
Moon (2009) A-
For a movie that primarily revolves around just one actor, in a very solitude and sparse environment, "
Moon" successfully kept me interested throughout the whole thing. Directed by
Duncan Jones and a tour de force performance by the always great
Sam Rockwell, this movie is absolutely a fascinating science-fiction tale with an ethical and moral quandary behind it. The plot is pretty much how the trailer for the movie describes it. A lone man manning a station on the moon, with his only companion being a helper robot named "GERTY;" voiced by
Kevin Spacey, and near the end of his three year contract with the company he works for, suddenly finds another person on the moon who happens to look exactly like him. Is he going crazy? What's going on? I don't really want to spoil the plot anymore than that, but if you've seen enough science-fiction, you can probably already guess what the doppelganger might be. Whatever the reason behind that plot, the fact that Sam Rockwell gets to play two roles of the same character, and yet still keep each one distinguishable is utterly amazing. "Moon" is a well made film, with good visuals of futuristic wonderment, and haunting music. Showing the feeling of loneliness of being stuck alone for almost three years can be pretty heartbreaking to watch, and it's not hard to understand how a person could go insane in that condition. "Moon" is utterly an unforgettable thought provoking experience and is one of the best science fiction films to come out recently. Definitely a must see.
