Month: August 2004

  • I was driving home from work and got on the freeway.  At the time
I drive from work (02:20am), the freeway is usually pretty empty, so
    I'm almost
always on the fast lane.  In that lane, there's also a car in
front of me, but since he is driving the same speed I am, I decided to
just stay relatively behind him.  I ended up following him for ten
miles, and the exit he chose was the same one I'm exiting. I think he
started feeling a little concerned that I've been following him the
whole time, because I noticed him looking at his rear and side windows
towards my car.  He even drove a little bit faster, but to his
luck, he is also taking the same local streets I take. Eventually, he
turned to a different street near where I turn into for home.  I
suppose I just found this humorous, because I imagined how would I feel
if a car has been following me for almost twenty minutes straight.

anyways, following up on the blog from yesterday, here's the DVD that best buy cutie helped me find.

  • So I was paying for the DVDs I bought at Best Buy, and at the register
was this pretty cute girl.  In fact, she personally helped me
earlier to look for some of those DVDs. She had all these little quirks
that would make my heart go "ba-thump" like her saying "aawwww, you're
buying Garfield & Friends" and saying how I have a "cute card" when
I showed her my drivers license along with my credit card.  After
bagging my items (two arms full), she carries them to the front desk to
de-magnetize the security tags.  I offer to help her carry them
and she cutely says "oh, but you're the guest, I have to carry these
for you.  But thanks for asking, it's because you're the man
right?"  (haha, we men love it when girls point out we're MEN) I
told her that I just wanted to help and she answers with an "aaawwwww."
After she had everything all set, she handed me my bags and called me
by my first name (how often do Best Buy people do that?) and wished me
a good day.  Okay, I know that she's just doing her job of
customer service, but the five to ten minutes that I spent with her
made me feel damn special.  You know I'll be going back to that
best buy again!  That my friends is the power of women over men.

  • The Strhess tour on Aug 8, 2004 at the House of Blues Anaheim
kicked ass!  I'm not really a fan of hardcore metal / metalcore (or what I call "growl metal") but
I'm a fan of Shadow's Fall, so I had to go check it out.  The
other acts that night was Remembering Never, Himsa, and As I Lay
Dying.  Standing in line to enter was humorous to me, because I
was the only one in line that had a blue Shadows Fall shirt, while
everyone had a black shirt.  Metal guys and black shirts.

At Remembering Never's set, halfway through a song the singer stopped
it all of a sudden.  Apparently there was a "white power guy"
punching a guy in the crowd.  They got him kicked out, and the
band pretty much stated that all racist bastards should grow the hell
up! The band itself wasn't bad and has some worthy headbanging moments.

    Himsa
was the next act and I've never heard of them before, but boy I'm glad
I did.  They were really good and impressed the hell outta
me.  After the show I went to buy their CD and a t-shirt from
their booth outside, and I was surprised that the singer (John
Pettibone) was himself out there selling the merchandise.  I got
him to sign my new CD and gave him props for rocking out. Hell yeah!

    As I Lay Dying
was the following act and it seems that a lot of their fans showed up
for this gig. I've heard them before when they opened for the
Killswitch Engage / In Flames tour, and they do rock out.  They
grew their hair longer since last I saw them, and they look better at
headbanging because of it. They definitely scream metal to my ears, but
I think they are just too hardcore for me to be following them.

    Lastly we got Shadow's Fall
and they rocked the house.  The main singer (Brian Fair) has this
looonnggg hair that he swings around when he head bangs and it's quite
a sight to see.  They played a good assortment of songs including
a couple of new tunes from their upcoming album.  I actually
almost missed their encore performance.  I started walking out to
the merchandise section at the end of the final song, when I hear "Do
you want to hear one more?"  I went back and was treated to
"Crushing Belial" which I was actually waiting for but thought they
weren't going to play.  Good thing they did.  They were also
filming their gig for their upcoming live DVD, so just maybe I might be
    in it.

My neck hurts from head banging and my ears are still a little on the deaf side, but all in all, Awesome night!

  • Well, I went to another Foam party.  This time, my friend didn't
throw it at a club, but at his own place.  Ofcourse with that in
mind, the attendance and the people in attendance are a little
skewed.  So it ended up a little on the downer side in some
respects, but there's some fun that was had as well.

One downer was the big turnout of metal-heads in a foam party.
What's up with that?  I figured metal-heads would be too
narrow-minded to attend a party that would primarily play dance
music.  But nope, there they are goofing off with the foam,
drinking the alcohol, and trying to make mosh pits.  There's NO
mosh pits in a dance guys!!! There was also a lack of hot women in the
party, when normally they would normally show up for something like
this if this was held in a club instead.  *sigh* oh well, maybe next time.

Well, it's a good thing that my friend is still going to make a profit
out of this, and it's nice of him to pretty much only charge guys, and
girls go free.  So that's a nice thing.  I got to hang out
with some friends of mine, which is also a nice thing.  What's
even nicer is that even though they are just my friends, they are still
hot.  Heck, they were the hottest chicks of the party IMHO.
A metal-head even tried, TRIED, to pick up on my friend.  Comedy.
Ofcourse, watching people dancing in the foam is always entertaining
    for me to watch.

All in all, it wasn't a complete waste of a night.  So it's good.

  • So DVDs are finally the established format when it comes to home video,
and the players are very much in practically every home.  Heck,
not counting the PCs and laptops, I have FIVE DVD players in my home. I
suppose I could say it's only four if I didn't count the xbox, but I
    digress.

Anyways, what's the life expectancy of a DVD player? My friend also has
several DVD players in his household, and they've finally gotten to the
point where they have a life of their own.  Admitedly, all his
players are no name brands, so... *shrugs* but still.... Anyways one of
his players only plays original copied DVDs; no copies, the other one
plays only copied DVDs; no originals, and the other one plays whichever
it feels like playing.  I can probably guess that it's the laser
that needs either replacing or cleaning or something, but he only had
his players for maybe a little over a year now.

Now, I do own one DVD player that I've had since the beginning of 2001,
and it still works the way it should.  But then it is a Panasonic
brand, so maybe that helps?  Another player in my household is a
SONY brand, and that one works fine, but acts up when it comes to some
copied DVDs. Maybe the question shouldn't be how long a DVD player lasts, but
    what brand do you have?

What are your experiences with DVD players, or from people you
    know?

  • I got a little frustrated with a friend of mine earlier.  He
wanted me to listen to this CD he has, which he assured me that I would
love.  Well, being that I'm not really that picky with my music in
the first place, I figured what the hey.  So I busted out my
laptop and played the CD.  The first thing out of his mouth was
"you have to hear it through a loud stereo system."  I questioned
why I should, and he said that it doesn't sound good without it.
I argued that a song is good because of the song, not how loud it
sounds, and that I will be able to judge whether I like the songs or not
even with my default lap top speakers.  But he kept insisting that
it doesn't sound good, that I won't like it because it isn't coming
from a loud stereo system. I mean
seriously, is that what determines what makes a good song?  Can't
a song stand on it's own, without any added help from how LOUD it's
    suppose to be played?

oh, and for the record, even with my default lap top speakers, I did
like the CD.  I suppose it helped that I heard some of the songs
before already, and already knew that I would like the whole CD.

    He
still doesn't understand my reasoning though, but coming from him, I'm
    not surprise.

  • So Nick Carter beats up Paris Hilton ey? stupid stupid stupid.

  • West Nile Virus STRIKES!!!

It's so sad, at work there was a crow that was just standing in the
middle of the road at work.  No matter how close you drive right
next to it, it wouldn't move.  It was alive though, but it just
would not move.  We eventually shooed it off the road, and on to
the grassy curve.  The poor thing ended up tipping over on the
grass and didn't even bother to stand up straight.  We called
horticulture to deal with the bird, and we have no idea if it would
survive the day.  If it wasn't for the fact that you shouldn't
touch an animal with the WNV, I would have picked the bird up and at
least petted it for comfort.  Poor thing.

  • Yesterday there was a situation that I can't entirely divulge due to
legal reasons, but I thought was quite humorous.  At where I work,
there was a "guest" who is putting a claim that she hurt herself due
her falling on her knee from an escalator stopping suddenly. She also
said that the "hispanic" employees who witnessed it didn't assist her
and even tried to hide their identities from the situation.  The
funny thing is that I was one of those "hispanic" employees that
actually witnessed it, and...uhhmm...I'm Asian....also BULLPOOPY to her
story.  Let's say she was still standing when it happened, and she
walked away from the area when I approached her.  She thinks she
can pull a fast one on me? I don't think so.  Needless to say, I'm
probably going to be contacted by the companies' lawyers as I'm the
only witness that contradicts her claim.  The hassle of it all.
