  • You know that Batman Begins trailer they showed at the superbowl
After they showed that, at work I was surprised at how many times I
heard people say "..so there's a new Batman movie..."  Now after
hearing that, I'm thinking "where have you people been that you didn't
know about it?"  But the truth is that the question I should be
thinking is "why did I know about Batman Begins
before these people?"  That's when I had to remind myself that the
information that I get through the internet isn't necessarily something
    the general public would know.

Sometimes we do take for granted the advancements in information
gathering and distribution that the internet has brought us.
Especially as an internet geek that regularly absorbs what the internet
can bring me (just look at my random link blogs), it's easy for me to
forget that there are still many people out there who aren't
"connected" to the world wide web.

    Patience people, patience.

  • My friend threw another gig to do a club rave, in a Mardi Gras
theme.  This time around, he didn't bring out the foam machine,
but the place was packed full of people and bouncing to the tunes. It
was held in a restaurant, rigged to be club, and it was over in the 909
(SoCal people should know what I'm talking about). Since it is a rave,
there were a lot of people with colorful clothes and accessories, that
goes with the black light and strobes.  Visually, it was pretty
cool.  I was also surprised to see a good number of Asian people
who attended, but I'm guessing that it's because UCRiverside is
    relatively close by.

There were ofcourse a lot of hot barely dressed ladies in the rave, and
since IT IS a Mardi Gras theme.... boobies for beads, boobies for
beads, lots of boobies for beads!  My friend gave me a ton of
beads to wear around my neck, and let's just say that I used them all to
good use and got myself an eyeful. One of them was even stubborn and demanded ALL my beads! What can I say, I was in the
spirit of the party and I had alcohol in me. Speaking of alcohol, the
bar had very loose practices in carding people, which caused the police
to shut it down for a couple of hours.

Have you seen the movie Napoleon Dynamite, and do you remember the character Pedro which is played by Efren Ramirez
Well, my friend who is throwing the gig has acquaintance with him, plus
Efren also happens to be a DJ.  That's right, (vote for) Pedro was
one of the DJ's that night, and he was actually pretty good.
    Awesome stuff.

Amusingly enough, as I'm writing this, the rave should not be over for another three hours! Oh well, time to go to bed.

  • So I got the Franz Ferdinand album in a buy 1 get 3 free deal from Columbia House Music.  Going into this, I wasn't expecting too much due to the fact that I'm actually not a big fan of their popular single "take me out."
What I did get was a pleasant experience listening to this rock music
that hails back to a '60s-'70s vibe, mixed in with modern
sensibilities. Unfortunately, I did not find anything really
spectacular about the album.  A lot of the songs show a lot of
promise to be kick ass, but ends up just becoming...good but not
great.  Well, even with my negative overtone in this short review,
this is still a good album which doesn't happen very often nowadays. I
bet a lot of these songs would work great on Karaoke nights.

    Stand out tracks...
    04) matinee
    05) auf acshe
    07) this fire
    08) darts of pleasure
    09) michael

    ----------------------

My friend let me listen to Snow Patrol - "Final Straw" which I recognized is the band that has that single "run."
I was never really interested with their sound because I figured that
it would be your typical mediocre generic popular rock.  I was
right.  Nothing really stood out to me with the whole album and I
would end up stumbling along the tracks wondering why I'm even
bothering with the lack of personality in the music.  I don't hate
the album, it's just not my cup of tea, and would best suit me as
background music that I can just zone out.

    ----------------------

I picked up The Postal Service - "Give up" on the strength of their super catchy single "Such Great Heights"
and let me just speak out on how blown away I was at the quality of
this gem of an album. If you are a fan of the '80s sound that involves
the Pet Shop Boys, New Order, or Depeche Mode, then you are going to
love this.  The electrobeat music that The Postal Service have is
a great refreshing sound to hear in 2005.  This kind of
music makes me think back to a time when I would be in a high building,
looking out a window admiring the moody rain outside, that gives a
sense of fantastical adventures that can only be seen in cyber punk
futuristic dramatic films.  Yet another album that I can't stop
playing over and over again. Consider me a fan now.

Along with the singles "Such Great Heights" and "We Will Become Silhouettes," other stand out tracks are...
    01) The District Sleeps Alone Tonight
    03) Sleeping In
    04) Nothing Better
    06) Clark Gable
    09) Brand New Colony

  • I heard earlier today that the "let's get ready to..." announcer guy Michael Buffer HATES the movie Million Dollar Baby.
The reasons he gave was that he could not buy the believability of the
boxing scenes.  He didn't like how Hilary Swank looked as a female
boxer, he didn't like Clint Eastwood's "attempt" of being a cut-man, he
didn't like how the audience looked so thin for these supposed big
boxing matches, etc etc etc, if it was on the subject of boxing in
Million Dollar Baby, he has a complaint about it.  Oh, and he
didn't like the way Eastwood & Swank talked in the movie.

Now... I personally liked the movie and recommend it to everybody to
watch, BUT I DO recognize those flaws he mentioned, and have nitpicked
about them when I was watching the movie.  But even with those
nitpicks, it didn't matter to me because I still found the movie to be
great. But that's the difference between me and Michael Buffer I
guess.  His nitpicks prevented him to enjoy the movie, while my
nitpicks weren't enough for me to share his opinion.

Ofcourse, I too have been known to nitpick a movie that makes me hate the film,
so I can see where Michael Buffer is coming from.  But I would
like to believe that I can tell a good movie from a bad, even with
nitpicks. There's tons of movies out there that are pretty good, even
with some glaring mistakes that are hard to avoid.  Good dramatic
films can still be hampered by melodramatic situations, action films
can still be laughed at because people can't shoot a gun properly, and
comedies can simply be held back a bit by a bad joke.  But even
then, some of those films with those mistakes still come out to be good
    movies.

So I suppose that should be the question of the day then..

How far can you nitpick a movie, before you should start to hate the film?

  • So, I gave this hot girl a ride to her location at work today.  In
fact, when I was pulling up next to her, I was thinking "My God, is
that Namie Amuro?"  For those who don't know, Namie Amuro
is a Japanese pop singer that emerged from the '90s that was REALLY
popular. In fact, it's hard not to have a crush on her back then.
But back to the point... so I picked up this girl, greeted her, and I
just went and bust out a little joke.  She laughs, is amused, and
we start having a nice conversation.  Then when she steps off my vehicle, I get to
see her walk away and admire the view. Boo yah! No more than ten minutes later, another hot chick needs a ride!  She has one of those Lisa Loeb type glasses,
which looked good on her.  She enters my vehicle and I quickly
bust out a silly comment.  She laughs, is amused, and we start
having a nice conversation.  Then when she steps off, I once again
    get to admire the
view.  Boo yah, Again! I swear, it's times like these at work that just makes my world go round.

  • Remember the promise I made myself to watch more movies this year
compared to the past few years? Well here we go, my first month report
on the movies I got a chance to watch this past January 2005, be it a
DVD or in the theater.  I tried to number them from the earliest
ones I saw to the latest.

    on the big screen...
    1) Million Dollar Baby
    2) Closer
    3) Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
    4) The Aviator
    5) Sideways

    on the small screen...
    1) The Butterfly Effect
    2) Dawn of the Dead 2004
    3) Spartan
    4) Garden State
    5) Blown Away
    6) the Dreamers (Innocents, Les)

That's not a bad amount of movies that I've seen within the past 31
days.  Most of the movies and the DVDs were carried over from
mostly 2004 releases to as far as 1992.  I feel good with what I'm
accomplishing here and I hope I'm able to keep up the momentum.
