  • People who know me have noticed that I can be quite the obsessive
compulsive.  Some of my friends call me "Mr.Clean" because of an
incident when I insisted that they used a coaster for their drink in my
room. They would also say "speck of dust, speck of dust" teasing me
about how I want things clean. They also call me "Monica," since that's
the name of the obsessive compulsive character from Friends.
I'm okay with the teasing, but I insist that there's a difference
between being a neat freak and somebody who likes things organized. I
like things in a certain way, whether it be from cleanliness, from
being put in a certain place, or done in a particular order. I've never
really considered myself Obsessive compulsive; maybe a little anal
    retentive, but not obsessive.

In light of the recent popularity of certain obsessive compulsive characters lately (Monk, Roy Waller in Matchstick Men, Howard Hughes in the Aviator),
I have to finally admit that there is a good chance that I too might be
one. I don't think that I'm in the same league as the characters I
mentioned, but I have been known to take things farther than they have
to be.  I thought it was just paranoia for me to double check if
the garage door is closed, or if I locked the doors of my car, or
whether I put something in a certain place.  Maybe it is just
paranoia, but I double check said items multiple times, when it's
obviously the way it's suppose to be. It's like some obsessive
compulsive people who will open and close a door or a cabinet a certain
number of times, before they are satisfied.

When I was a lead at work, I was also very particular in the way the
operation was run.  It had to be moving in a certain way, and at a
certain time for me to be satisfied.  It would just eat at me
sometimes when it's not.  I'm even able to make a chaotic
situation logically organized because of my nature.

Obsessive compulsiveness probably has something to do with chemical
imbalances in my body, which means that I probably should be taking
some kind of medicine. But then, I hate going to doctors.  Always
with the bad news.... So I'm relegated to just believing that I might
be obsessive compulsive, but not enough for me to take medicine for. I
shall continue observing myself as years goes by.

  • Inuyasha - Toki wo koeru omoi
(Affections touching across time) is a good example of the standard
Japanese Anime movie based off a comic book / TV series.  Most of
the time, these types of movies rely solely on the fanbase, as they
usually assume you know who is who without much explanation.  The
problem there is that it usually ends up becoming a movie that just
feels like an extended TV episode.  Sure the animation is of
higher quality than the TV series, the use of certain camera shots are
clearly stylized in the idea that this is a full fledge movie, and
there is the use of Computer Graphics spliced in regular cel-animation
that is popular in animated features nowadays. But either than that,
it's the same as the TV show.  As a fan of the show I enjoyed it,
but for those who aren't fans I can't easily recommend it to them. With
all it's plus and minuses, I would give the movie a "C+."

    ----------------

Ghost in the Shell 2 : Innocence follows in the same footstep of it's predecessor.
It greatly excels in evolving the mixture of traditional cel animation
with computer graphics. One thing about the Ghost in the Shell movies
is that compared to normal anime movies, this ones treats themselves as
FILMS and not simply as TV/comic book adaptations. While the fans do
benefit in knowing the characters when watching the film, the non-fans
can still enjoy the deep and serious noir atmosphere that this movie
evokes. But then that's where part of the problem is, because the movie
can be too serious most of the time that it can come off as
pretentious. It dragged a bit at some parts, but it's overall not bad, so I would give this film
    a "B-."

    ----------------

Cowboy Bebop : Knockin' on Heaven's Door,
was a very pleasant surprise to me. I honestly thought that this was
going to be your standard anime movie based on a hit TV show, but what
I got was the next action flick in the idea of a Die Hard or a Mission Impossible. Like GITS2,
you do not have to be a fan of the show to appreciate the movie. In
fact, if you are simply a fan of action movies with a few doses of
sci-fi in it (not overbearing sci-fi), then this movie is for you. The
characters are easily memorable just based on the movie alone and the
story is good enough to hold your interest, even if you are not a fan
of the series or anime in general.  Needless to say, recommended
    with a "B+."

    Unwritten Law (self titled)
is one of the best pop-punk albums that's been released. Part of the
reason for that is because it doesn't trap itself in the pop-punk
formula that revolves around fart jokes or problems in love.
Another reason is that they also borrow other musical elements from
metal and emo.  That actually helps bring out a harder edge in the
songs that most pop-punk bands don't have.  The majority of songs
have a nice "drive" to them that helps you get into a rambunctious
mood, while the ballads are definitely great sing-a-long types.
The most popular song here that got lots of airplay back in '98 - '99
is Cailin, and although it's not entirely representative to the rest of the album, it is one of the best tracks.

    Other Favorites are...
    1) Harmonic
    2) Teenage Suicide
    3) Sorry
    6) Lonesome
    11) Before I Go

    ----------------------

Natalie Imbruglia - Left of the Middle is actually a pretty good album. Sure it's got that number one pop hit "Torn"
that was played over and over again in the late '90s, but the rest of
the album deserves some notice too. The thing about the album is that
it's a smorgasborg of music that ranges from rock, pop, electronica,
adult contemporary, etc... but it's usually geared towards the
"independent woman" that can be angry and yearning type, that was
    popularized by Alanis Morissette.
Natalie Imbruglia definitely imbues passion and emotion, which elevates
the songs into something better than it probably would have been.

    Other Favorites are...
    5) Wishing I Was There
    6) Smoke
    7) Pigeons And Crumbs
    10) Intuition
    11) City

    ----------------------

    Halford - Resurrection
is definitely definitely one of the best metal albums around.  Rob
Halford did an excellent job in making songs with melody, speed, and
power, basically kick-ass heavy metal! These ain't your wimpy metal
songs as they demand to be sang with absolute fury with your hand
raised up in a fist ready to smash and crush. His voice is still HIS
VOICE and it's just simply great to listen to this Metal God howl and
    scream like he never aged.

    Favorites are...
    1) Resurrection
    2) Made in Hell
    5) Silent Screams
    7) Cyber World
    8) Slow Down

  • Well, my good friend VT Magnus has departed back to the U.S. Army
stationed in South Korea.  He was here on leave for a couple of
weeks, but alas those weeks are now over. We didn't get to do
everything we wanted to do, like Vegas, Snowboarding, San Diego,
etc..., BUT we did get to spend time with each other.  It was just
like the good old days when "TPAK" was together in full indecisive
    force.
"so, what do you want to do?"
"so, where do you want to eat?"
"so, what movie do you want to watch?"
"so, what game do you want to play?"
But if we weren't indecisive, then it wouldn't be the same.  Here's to you Magnus! Take care over there.

  • I'm a fan of talk radio, and I'm aware about the whole situation with
the "threat" of Satellite Radio muscling them out of people's
lives.  Right now, several car models are now coming with some
Satellite radio already installed, so I can see why they are worried.
Standard FM talk radio has been on the defense the past months, with
the whole Howard Stern situation, cutting him out of stations, etc...
but it never really peaked my attention until I started hearing those
commercials they've been playing the past weeks.

"You are listening to L.A.'s FREE talk radio."
"Who would want to pay for talk radio, when you can get it FREE?"

...and so it goes.  First off, broadcast radio while very
accessible to the common joe isn't really "free."  You "pay" the
station by listening to the commercials, which in turn gives them their
ratings that determines the money flow that goes into their pockets.
Sure we can choose not to listen to the commercials and listen to
another station, but notice how many stations have their ads on at the
same time? But even then, there's no subscription fees or anything like
that, so the normal person can simply say that FM talk radio is in fact
FREE. Sure, whatever. Just don't be naive about this whole FM radio vs
Satellite business.  Know the facts surrounding it before posing
    an opinion.

  • That's it, it's official. I'm forever hooked on the state
lottery.  I simply cannot skip a day of the super lotto, which happens
twice a week.  The reason for this is because when I first started
buying some lotto tickets months ago, I created a regular set of
numbers to use. Yes, that was a mistake, because now I just simply have
to use those numbers everytime!  If I don't use those numbers one
single time, and the winning numbers that time is that set, then I will
never forgive myself. I just can't take that risk, so I simply won't be
able to stop playing until I win. ... so let me win already.

  • Entertainment Weekly has an
additional magazine they release called "Look."  It gears directly
towards movies, TV, and DVDs.  Well, in the Spring 2005 issue,
they had a section for "Best + Worst Comic book Movies."
Ignoring their worst list, these are their 5 best...
    1) Superman II
    2) American Splendor
    3) Spider-Man / Spider-Man 2
    4) X2: X-Men United
    5) From Hell

For the most part, I don't entirely agree or disagree with their
choices (although choosing Superman II is a pleasant surprise for number one), but one thing that
I take an issue with is... X2: X-Men United
in the top five? I know that movie is hella popular, and it's enjoyable
in it's own right, but it simply does NOT deserve to be one of the top
five best comic book movies.  By now, if you think I'm out of my mind, then you are
    either...
A - a person who hardly ever read the X-Men comic books
B - someone who read the comic books, but actually adored X2
C - someone who read the comic books, but recognizes that X2 isn't the best of the best
If you are person "A" then I can totally understand why you liked
it.  It's a blockbuster movie with lots of pow zooms and wows. If
you are person "B" then you should be ashamed of yourself, as you should be person "C."

    The X-Men has
    always been
about characters and how they relate to each others first and
foremost.  There's really a stronger sense of drama than there is
on action. The X-Men has always at the forefront been about
Professor Xavier, Scott Summers & Jean Grey, Wolverine, and
ofcourse Magneto.  To a degree, Storm plays a HUGE role as well.
So what did this movie do?  They practically put Wolverine as the
only X-Men character that matters! The only other character that has
any real good representation is Magneto. Okay fine, so it's not that
faithful to the books, but for some reason people think so! The first
X-Men movie was more faithful and had the best feel of the comic books,
but nobody seems to recognize that. Constantine gets slammed by comic book geeks that it isn't faithful to the Hellblazer books, but they didn't seem to mind so much with X2 did they? Hypocrites!

Is it because of the action? ooohhh, look at it blow up! Are people so
easily amused by the mutant powers going all special effects that they
can't tell that this movie is nothing but an average action special
    effects extravanganza?
People are making it sound like... oh yeah... One Of The Best Comic
Book Movies EVER!  But wait, people say that this movie has lots
of humanity and a deep story line, it's not just all about the action.
WHERE? There's as much humanity and
a deep story in this moive like there is in a movie like Independence Day
Atleast ID4 is recognized as nothing but fluff as a movie, so I don't
get why X2 is put in such a high pedestal. A movie like X2 is the reason people think that comic book movies are just for kids.

*sigh* what can I do ey? I'm always in the minority opinion of things anyways.
