Well, the Tokyo Game Show
is going on, and the next-gen console wars between Microsoft's xbox360,
Sony's PlayStation3, and Nintendo's Revolution is in full swing.

The first to action is Nintendo's Revolution controller,
which has gotten a huge mix of people's opinions about it. 
Gamer's mostly hate the concept, but developers seems to love it. Me
personally I think the Rev controller is pretty darn cool. I think that
just like
how the DS touch screen sparked some creativity from developers, this
controller will do the same for the Revolution. That's a good thing for
games evolving as far as I'm concerned.  But at the current time,
with lack of any further announcements in regards to games and support,
the Revolution is still not considered in "the running" against the
other two consoles.

Next up is Microsoft's showing of xbox360 games.
With better development kits out there, the 360 games have definitely
shown improvements over the E3 builds. Not only that, but more than
anything, it showed that Microsoft is very serious about their
commitment in gaining more support from Japan.

Then we got Sony's showing of PlayStation3 games.
Once again the current industry leader flexes it's muscles and
demonstrates that the PS3 is the favored console to win the next war.
One of it's biggest ammunition comes from the trailer of Metal Gear Solid 4 : Guns of the Patriot.
This is the one that really got the online community in a frenzy (and
stole that thunder from Nintendo's Rev controller) because it was an
impressive trailer for the game, done with "real-time" graphics
(compared to Killzone). That "real-time" aspect part is where people
got confused though. What
people have to realize is that while the graphics for MGS4 looks
outstanding, it's still pre-scripted. This allows them to tweak
whatever they can to make a particular cinematic shot look better than
it would have, compared to if you were actually controlling the
motion. With
that said, I think the actual game play graphics (with HUD, 3rd angle
view, etc...) will look extremely close or just like that trailer they
showed. And with THAT said, I don't see why the 360 couldn't produce
the same graphics that MGS4 or next-gen Killzone are showing.
Seriously.

Pictures aren't really the best way to compare the
next-gen graphicaly capabilities (since it doesn't account effects,
particle shots, etc...) but take a look at the current difference
between MGS4 (pic 1, 2) and Gears of War (pic 1, 2). Now, if we go by real-time cinematic trailers of the two, we have these to go by : MGS4 real-time pre-scripted trailer (mirror) vs GoW real-time pre-scripted trailer (mirror). The difference is there in graphical quality and in cinematic camera direction, but honestly not that much.

Then besides Gears of Wars, another upcoming next-gen game (for PC,
xbox360, PS3) with the same "style" of graphical realism is that Wardevil game that also has a video demo of it's game engine. Notice
that the graphics for that are pretty impressive already, and honestly
in the same league as MGS4 or GoW. This just proves that the gap
between the PS3's power and the 360 isn't as big as it was for the xbox
and PS2. While the xbox had exclusive games (Riddick) that the PS2
supposedly cannot do, it doesn't look like it'll be the same situation
with the PS3 and the 360. Ofcourse, even with the power difference
between the PS2 and the xbox, the PS2 was still able to produce "xbox
quality" graphics (God of War), which just proves that talented
developers should be able to tap into more power from the 360 to meet
any graphical prowess that the PS3 is suppose to have over it.
 
This next-gen console war will
seriously be more about game exclusives than fanboys boasting hardware
specs. So choose the games you WANT to play, and THEN choose the
console it's going to.

All these years that I've been with my girlfriend, she would
occasionally drag me to go see "chick flicks" that I really rather not
see (like Hope Floats, Sweet Home Alabama or Maid in Manhattan).
Ofcourse I would drag her sometimes to movies that she'd rather not
see, so I'm not that innocent myself.  It got to the point where
we now know what movies we could actually go together, compared to
having to force the other to accompany them. Now it bears to mention
that I do enjoy romantic comedies as well as romantic dramas that chick
flicks are mostly related to.  It's just that a lot of them are
usually very bland, too saccharine, or simply badly made, that makes me
want to avoid them for the most part.

Over the summer though, I saw the trailer for "Just Like Heaven" starring Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo, with Jon Heder from Napoleon Dynamite fame. If you've noticed from a previous post I made
about fall/winter movies I want to see, it's actually listed there. Now
obviously this "chick flick" is actually something I want to see. I
even thought it'd be a nice refreshing change to go to the theaters to
see a film that me and my girlfriend can enjoy. Bringing this up to
her, it apparently turns out that she doesn't want to see it! 
Ironically, it's the same exact reasons I usually give her as to why I
don't want to see chick flicks. what what what?! I can't believe it! I
mean yes it looks like a cheesy romantic comedy, the plot seems
implausible, and it looks predictable and unoriginal just by looking at
the trailer. But damnit I still want to see it. I'm not claiming that
it could be an oscar quality movie, but it at least looks like it'll
make me laugh and be heart warming at the same time. Damn how the tides
have turned.

Ever since I "lost" the use of my desk top PC due to the malfunctioned
graphics card, I've been using my lap top as my primary computer. Man,
I could get used to this.  Everything of importance from my
desktop has been transferred to my portable hard drive, and combine
that with my lap top, I have a totally mobile computer. If it wasn't
for the fact that my desktop is still a powerhouse compared to my
laptop, I could easily just live with my current situation right
now.  In the future, I think I'm definitely just going to purchase
a nice powerful laptop and give/sell my desktop.

Well, I was on the air today with the "what is your deal" segment of the Kevin & Bean radio show.  Unlike last time,
they did not hang up on me! I think I was a little shock of actually
being on the air that I stuttered a bit, so I  still made a fool
of myself. I called saying that I was able to see the first episode of
the WB show Supernatural,
and that it's actually pretty scary for a TV show. Kevin did most of
the talking at that point, but then proceeded to ask me how I was able
to watch it in advance.  Yeah, that's the question I was dreading
since it'll bring me back to the reason they hang up on me the first
time around. In avoidance, I kinda gave a "half answer" to the question
but he figured out how I was able to see it (via a comic-book
convention).  After I was released from the broadcast, I could
have sworn they made a joke about how I came from the future or
something to have seen it already or something like that. huhn... Maybe
next time, I'll be able to call them with no embarassment on my part.

While I'm on the subject of TV, I've got to say that the past
decade has produced a lot of quality shows that exceeds any decade
before it. I'll go as far and say that the past ten years have given me
a lot of my personal favorites in the almost three decades of my life.
There are more diverse programs that cater to everybody, and serialized
stories only help elevate the medium into a more involving form of
entertainment.

The 2005 fall/winter season is now upon us, and there's lots and lots of shows that I'll be following.

I've got sit-coms, dramas, and dramedies to follow...
Arrested Development, Navy NCIS, Supernatural, the Office, Law & Order SVU, Lost, Everybody hates Chris, Joey, CSI, Malcolm in the Middle, Numb3rs, Veronica Mars, Alias, Smallville

I'm not above watching quality animated shows either...
South Park, Drawn Together, Ghost in the Shell, the Batman, Naruto, Justice League Unlimited, Inu-Yasha, Full Metal Alchemist, the Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad
