  • movies I've seen recently...

    Jarhead is a war
movie unlike any war movies I've ever seen.  This movie is more
about living the life of a marine, as opposed to a movie about the war
itself. You really get a taste of what it felt like to be in the
situation the main character played by Jake Gyllenhaal
went through as a marine. This movie doesn't necessarily glorify a
marine's life like a lot of war movies do, but instead humanizes the
experience.  This isn't an action movie at all and more of a
    character driven drama. Sam Mendes
is becoming one of my favorite directors because he makes a great
emphasis to let the characters of the movie shine through, and Jarhead
    is no exception. "A-"

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire isn't necessarily one of the strongest of the four movies, and this is coming from somebody who considers GoF the best
book of the series. The pacing of the movie simply went by too fast, as
they tried to cram as much information from the books as a 2.5 hrs film
can hold. Out of all the movies, this one cut almost half of the book's
content (okay, maybe just a little over a 1/3). Out of all the movies,
this one also took the most glaring liberties in the plot. There's also
a lot of elements that aren't explained in the film either, and the
non-book reading fans are going to have to take a lot at face value. I
simply felt that the story would have worked better as a 3 hour movie.
... and that's it for me being a bit nitpicky...

The glaring positive thing about the movie is the look and feel of the
Harry Potter world. Although there are CG sequences that didn't look
too great, there are a lot that really looked excellent. There's also a
lot of great inventive uses of
magic displayed here and like the Prisoner of Azkaban, the world and
people look and act more "natural" as opposed to the staged look of the
Columbus films. The interactions between the characters are also quite
entertaining to watch. The humor here also seems to be improved upon,
while the scary sequences justified the PG-13 rating. I mentioned the
pacing of the film moving too fast, but director Mike Newell
    was able
to make the movie really shine when he slowed things down for the more
important events in the story. There are a lot of memorable moments
littered throughout the movie which helps makes the film a wonderful
    experience to watch.

Overall though, I still enjoyed the movie a lot despite it's flaws. The
positive elements simply overshadow the negative, so it's impossible
for me to say that I hated the movie (like some diehard purists are probably going to say). I commend Mike Newell for tacking
    on
what's arguably the hardest book of the series to adapt. But it still
has to be said that the book is so much better than the movie. "B+"

p.s. I've seen this movie twice already, and I liked it even more the second time around.

  • Los Angeles radio station KROQ 106.7 is
having their annual "Almost Acoustic Christmas" event.  Every
year, the show always sells out fast, but I thought I'd try my luck
anyway. On Nov 17, 10AM was the pre-sale tickets to KROQ "street team
members" so I attempted to get tickets for Night Two of the event. Here's how it went...

09:59am - started pressing refresh on the ticketmaster page
10:00am - page finally refreshes to allow ticket purchase, start inputting necessary information (3 steps)
10 seconds later - SOLD OUT!!!!

Now, I try this again on the public sale time on Nov 18, 6PM. SAME
FRIGGIN THING!!!! damn, I'm impressed. It is a phenomenal line-up too,
so I'm not surprised at how fast the tickets went.  Well, maybe
    next time I guess.

  • This past year, I've noticed that I've been purchasing a lot of music
CDs.  I believe I've got over 40 new music CDs, which must be a
record for me. At first I thought that maybe it's because there's a lot
of bands that I like releasing albums this year.  Kinda true, but
not really.  Then I thought that maybe it's because I have an
insatiable need to listen to new music.... a possibility, sure. Is it
because I buy a majority of my music CDs from Best Buy which has
awesome great sale prices (especially on the first release week)? That
    could be it too.

The music industry has blamed downloading as the source of their
problems in selling CDs nowadays.  Consumers has blamed the music
industry for putting out too much *crap* for people to want to
buy.  They are bought wrong.  Downloading actually works
wonders in getting people to buy music CDs, but only if the people
downloading don't abuse the system and just rely on that to get their
music.  The so called lack in quality of music today is no
different than it was twenty years ago, so that excuse never really
works. I think the real problem is still greed. The industry is too
greedy for profits that they charge too much for their products, while
the consumers are too greedy to want to pay for products they actually
want. It's an evil cycle, no doubt.

At this time, the standard suggested retail price for CDs is $17.99,
which is honestly a ridiculous price. All that price will do is
alienate people from actually taking the plunge on buying a new CD.
Thankfully there are stores (like Best Buy) who automatically mark down
the price to a manageable level of $9.99 - $12.99 (in some cases as low
as $7.99). I don't know if that's still too high for some consumers,
but I think that's the magic price range the industry should officially
follow. I think my 40+ new music CDs that I bought this year is
    testament to that.

You Are External - Believer - Empowered

You feel your life is controlled externally.
You tend to attribute most things to luck or karma.
You don't own your successes or your failures.
You tend to take life as it comes, but you're also apt to feel helpless.

You are a true believer in luck, fate, and karma.
You believe that life is a game of chance - not a game of skill.
You either consider yourself very unlucky or very lucky.
No matter what, you don't feel like you can change the hand you were dealt.

You have a good deal of power, but you also know the pecking order.
You realize that working the system does get you further.
You know who to defer to and who to control.
When it comes to the game of life, you play things flawlessly.

  • Fox's Arrested Development CANCELLED AGAIN!
Just seven more episodes left, and then that's it for the Bluth family.

I swear, I wish these really good TV shows that I'll end up watching in
the future don't end up on Fox. Because they always cancel the good
shows. The biggest disappointments for me in Fox's cancel happy
mentality has always been Futurama, Family Guy (which thankfully
returned), Firefly, and Wonderfalls.  Now I'll have to add
Arrested Development to that list. It's such a quality show too and has
proven to me to be the funniest thing on TV this season. I admit it's
such an odd show that it can't capture everybody's attention, but for
those of us who "get it" it's purely genious.

  • The subject matter of Shopgirl has been criticized for being kinda close to the movie Lost In Translation.
Both movies deals with a "may - december relationship" but unlike Lost
in translation which dealt with it in a non-physical sense, shopgirl
goes the other route with it's sexuality. But the real topic of the
movie is about Claire Danes' character who feels stuck in life with no direction, but surprisingly finds herself to be the object of desire of Jason Schwartzman's and Steve Martin's
characters. The movie itself has a somber look, sound and feel to it,
which seems to reflect the character that Claire Dane plays. Also, even if
done purposely, the direction and pacing might be a little slow at
times. There are also little bits of voice over narration that feel out
of place to the whole of the movie. Not a serious drama, or a light
drama, but it's dramatic nontheless. "B-"

Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
is quite a nice and entertaining claymation film.  The visuals
done in this film are just outstanding and only proves that animated
features don't have to only be done in CG. The main characters are very
memorable and the story while a bit cliche in several plot devices is
nothing but light hearted fun. This is simply quite an enjoyable film
to watch that doesn't try to be more than what it really is.
Recommended for all to see. "B"

Years ago, I remember thoroughly enjoying watching Bring It On.
Five years later, it's become one of my all time favorites. Despite the
cliche driven plot and characters, or the story at hand for that
matter, this movie still proves to be nothing but a joy to watch. This
is a well executed light hearted comedy, sports film, and a teen
romance movie.  It also has some very memorable scenes and catchy
cheers that are burned in my movie brain. The cheerleading sequences
themselves are quite a treat to watch, and the movie succeeds in
showing us the positives and negatives of the sport. Spirit Fingers! "B+"

  • The past two months I pretty much lived in two homes, my own home and
my girlfriend's home.  I would average about four to five days at
my girl's place, which is a lot more than the one or two day average
that I used to do.  For the most part, I'm rather enjoying it, and
if anything else, it makes me want to completely move in with her. I
honestly can't say right now if that will happen or not, but it's
crossed our minds a lot lately.

On a related note, we've talked about our future home together that we
plan to own.  There are currently two choices at this time.
Her current home (owned by her Mom) or a house that her Mom is using
for rental purposes (recently vacant). I visited that house recently
and with some fixing, it's actually quite nice. It's a one story house,
two car garage, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a study, living / dining
room, family room connected to the kitchen, and an additional patio
room at the yard. In the current market
value here in California, my girlfriend's house is currently $800k
while the rental place is $600k.  If the market stays that way in
two years (our current time frame goal), we're most likely going to
choose the rental place to purchase.  But if the market goes down
at that time, we'll just purchase the house she is staying in right
now. We'll just see what happens.
