  • I visited the Santa Anita Race Track for the very first time to attend the KROQ microbrew festival.
The first impression I got was "wow, I didn't think there's still this
many people who bet on the horses!" I honestly thought that betting on
the horse races was a dying breed, but I was very wrong because the
place was packed. Add the amount of people who were there just for the
microbrew festival and we've got a huge crowd in attendance.

I went to the park with my girlfriend, two of my friends, and also met
up with two other friends there. The microbrew festival itself was held
in an enclosed area in the infield area of the race track, and that
was also well packed. My girlfriend wasn't really used to wading
through a crowd that thick, and opted to stay out with three of my
other friends. So it was just me and one friend of mine who stayed to
    drink.

There literally were several dozens brands of beer that was available for us,
but instead of going through it in a pattern, we based it randomly on
what line was convenient to us at that time. Some lines took as little as
five minutes to get to the beer, while others took as much as a half
hour. The reason some lines took longer than others was because there
were too many people who may have been drinking a little too much
holding up the line. I've even observed some random guys taking
pictures with random girls, just because the alcohol makes them brave
enough to do so.  Speaking of girls, the KROQ listening female
audience came out in full force and damn where there some hotties!

At the end, me and my friend didn't really want my girlfriend and my
other friends to wait too long outside, so after about one hour and a
half in there, I got five beers in me (7oz each), while my friend
had three. I had a nice happy buzz for the rest of the day, while my
friends kept saying that I was really just drunk. Seriously though, I
wasn't. Maybe I would have, if I got three or more beers in me.

  • movie I've seen recently...

    Inside Man (2006)  C+

As a caper movie, Spike Lee's "Inside Man" succeeds in keeping me guessing at what's going to happen. Things were kept as mysterious as can be, and I was pretty impressed at how the whole caper was orchestrated by Dalton Russell (Clive Owen). But the mysteriousness of the characters is where I believe the movie falters, as the lack of depth among the people in the movie makes it hard for me to empathize with what's going to happen to them.  Detective Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington) was probably the only character I actually cared about, but even then I wasn't too investment in him either. I suppose the lack of knowledge on who the characters were, is part of the theme of the film about how we can't judge people by their outside appearance. I did like how Spike Lee played on people's reactions towards the situation they were dealt with, and about their perceptions on other ethnic groups.

The musical score I thought was a bit lacking and out of place at some points, while some visual tricks that they used for the film felt unecessary (that spinning around motion got on my nerves). The film also felt longer than it probably should have, and the payoff I thought wasn't as good as I wished it was. Even though I've listed several complaints, I did enjoy the movie. Once again, as a caper movie, it's totally okay and I can easily recommend it. Will it be something I'll remember in the near future though? Probably not.

  • To all my 24 watching compadres or my "I'm no moe, but that Jack Bauer...." buddies. WOW, the big reveal of who is behind the conspiracy is a much bigger surprise than I would have thought. I'm really interested in how they are going to explain this off. I mean, woah indeed.

24 = BEST DAMN SHOW ON TV!!!

I mean, it's still hard to believe a lot of the times (that's saying something), but it's just such a fun and intense show to follow. I swear, I might just make my Tuesday posts the "I love me my 24 / Jack Bauer" day.

There's this other blogger out there who does humorous recaps of the show. For fans of 24, you should check it out...

  • Today is the last day of the first free xbox live weekend. With that in mind, I thought I'd give a helping hand to those who are either waiting or on the fence in getting an xbox 360.

Surprisingly enough, a shortage still exists. You can't just walk into a store and find the 360 in stock. You pretty much have to show up at the exact same day they get a shipment in, because at the end of that day or the following day, it will be out of stock again. If you happen to find a "core" package though, ignore it, as it's simply more cost effective to wait for the "premium" package that already comes with the hard drive, wireless controller, and headset.

...and about those awesome wireless controllers, you need to decide what you are going to do about the battery. You have a choice between getting the official play & charge kit, or just get a typical charger with NiMH AA batteries (that's what I use).

The first thing a new owner of an xbox360 needs to do when they start the console, is to get an xbox live account. If you don't want to subscribe to the paid "gold" service, simply get a FREE "silver" account. You will need access to xbox live to download firmware / software updates for your console. Ofcourse the gold service is what you will need to play online multiplayer games.

Then comes the games. My top two choices of what you should consider owning right away are Call of Duty 2 (first person shooter) and Fight Night : Round 3 (sports - boxing). Other games that are totally worth checking out are Burnout Revenge (arcade racer), Condemned : Criminal Origins (first person survival horror), Dead or Alive 4 (fighting), The Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion (role playing game), Ghost Recon : Advanced Warfighter (tactical shooter), Kameo : Elements of Power (platformer adventure), NBA 2K6 (sports - basketball), Need For Speed : Most Wanted (arcade racer), Project Gotham Racing 3 (arcade racer), and Rumble Roses XX (sports - wrestling).

Once you play several of those games I mentioned, there will be no doubt that you are experiencing a next-gen experience.

Another neat thing about the xbox360 is the xbox live arcade, which is integrated directly to your console's "dashboard." You pretty much download retro / home-brew games using the xbox live marketplace, and you only need the "silver" xbox live service for some online multiplayer gaming. The top games I recommend a download are Astropop, Geometry Wars : Retro Evolved, Smash TV, and Zuma Deluxe.

There you go. And to steal a phrase from Sega of the past, "welcome to the next level."
