  • Once again thanks to my friend, I was able to attend another year of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). I was excited going into the event, as there were a lot of exciting new stuff this year.

One of the things I really wanted to try was the Nintendo
Wii controllers (or the "wii-mote") but the line to try it was closed
by the time I got to it. Nintendo really surprised everyone, by the
fact that their new console has really sparked a lot of interest among
gamers and developers alike. Despite the graphics not being on par with
PS3 or 360, no one didn't seem to care too much and was actually
talking about *gasp* gameplay! Out of the big three, I feel that
Nintendo "won" E3 by having the best buzz.

Sony finally had PlayStation3 demos on the show floor this year, and out of those ones, Heavenly Sword was very very very impressive. Ofcourse they are also showcasing the trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4,
and boy does it draw a huge crowd of people that love to watch it. One
thing I noticed about the PS3 is that the graphic quality only seems
slightly better (if at all) as opposed to the xbox360. The PS3 does
seem to have a little more detail and clearer than the 360, but the
comparison is much smaller than it was between the xbox v.1 and the
PS2. A lot of people (including myself) felt that Sony had a luckluster
presence in E3, although their booth is still packed as ever.

Microsoft this year was all about games, games, games for the xbox360. A lot of their titles were very popular on the show floor, from Lost Planet, Crackdown, Saint's Row, Ninety Nine Nights, Chromehounds, Splinter Cell : Double Agent, Dead Rising, Viva Pinata, and Rockstar's Table Tennis (damn fun). I was even able to see a very extensive demonstration of Gears of War, and wow did that look oh so excellent. There was even a section dedicated to the next-gen PC games like Crysis, which is probably the most technically beautiful looking game. Also just like with MGS4, when the Halo 3
trailer pops up, people stop to watch, and for several of them they
actually stop playing to do so. With this showing, Microsoft had a lot
of great buzz as well, much better than originally expected by the
    public.

Other things that happened at the expo was me doing
really bad with magnetic darts, trying to win a prize. I also noticed
that there were even more news media covering the event. Oh, because of
the newer more conservative E3 rules about booth babes this year, it
seems that there really were less of them around for men to gawk at.
Speaking of the media and booth babes, the infamous Paris Hilton
made an appearance to promote a game. Man, she drew a huge crowd to the
point that it became a fire hazard and people had to be forced out of
the area. So nope, never did get to see her.

I didn't really do much photo ops with the booth babes this year, but I had a funny encounter with one. It was one of the Tecmo girls,
and she liked the shirt I was wearing with the flames on the collar and
all. She was all "wow, love the shirt, you're flaming! No wait, I'm not
saying you are gay, but wait, I'm not saying there's anything wrong
with that either." I just gave her a chuckle, told her that's alright,
thanked them and walked off. Then she goes "Oh God, I just say the
    stupidest things!" hahaha

    After about four
hours at E3, to my surprise I started to feel bored. For whatever
reason though, I just didn't feel the "magic of gaming." Admitedly, I
only had one hour of sleep between my graveyard shift at work and
attending E3, but the event did keep me wide awake the whole time.
Maybe it's because I always end up just observing somebody else playing
the games, as opposed to me actually playing it myself. Once I've seen
all I can see in the exhibit halls, I promptly went over to the live
taping of G4's live E3 coverage,
to see if I could maybe catch myself on TV. Sure enough, I would
occasionally see myself on TV in the first 45 minutes of the show.
In fact, at one point I was on screen a whole whopping 15 seconds! Sweet.

Next year, I may not care about attending again. The truth of the matter is, with extensive live TV coverage of the event, the internet doing a really great job this year in providing non-attendees game trailers shown at E3, to using the xbox 360's live marketplace
to download those trailers and play demos of games as well, there's
really less reasons for me to attend. But we'll see if I do decide on
    that next year.

  • With the summer movie season already starting, I thought I'd talk about the "popcorn movie" or the "fast food movie." Movies that don't exactly meet the criteria to be an art film, or a possible oscar nomination for best picture of the year. These movies are pretty much how they are described to be, entertaining and fun to watch. For a lot of movie critics, these kinds of movies are a waste of time for being very unimportant to the artistic value of film making. A lot of casual movie goers take offense to that point of view by the critics. I myself admit to avoiding those types of movies, because of the perceived notion that they are stupid. I'm open to watch a "popcorn movie" once in a while, but it's really got to interest me in some way for me to go see it.

Consider this though. Maybe it's simply because a lot of them are just brainless. The most common argument to that statement, is that they are suppose to be brainless. The counter-argument to that would be that there is a difference between "brainless FUN" and "brainless DUMB." A movie like Mission : Impossible III would be something I would consider "brainless fun," while something like Scary Movie 4 is simply "brainless dumb."

Critics and casual movie goers need to realize that middle ground, instead of criticizing someone that they "don't get it." Something fun and silly to watch can be good too. But at the same time, something fun and silly to watch can also be bad.

  • movies I've seen recently...

    United 93 (2006)  A-

This movie should make you feel really sad after watching it. Ofcourse that should be obvious right? You are not watching United 93, you are experiencing it. The movie is done with no real narrative or any real social commentaries. It's purpose is to just show you the events that occurred that morning, and we are left to think or feel about it anyway we perceive it. There are information in the film that I never knew before, so in many ways, this is also an educational historical piece. The most emotional scene to me though, would be the one where the passengers of United 93 start calling their love ones on the phone, knowing that they are most likely going to die. This is definitely some powerful film making that Paul Greengrass has brought to us here.

Good Night, and Good Luck (2005)  B-

I've got to admit to being slightly disappointed with this George Clooney directed film. At the same time, I recognize it to be a rather good film about newscaster Edward R. Murrows battle of the words with senator McCarthy's anti-communism terror. I just found myself a little bored with how slow Good Night, and Good Luck felt, even though I found the topic of mccarthyism very interesting, as well as the politics and procedures in the business of news. I also have to point out that I also felt rather bothered by the lack of a soundtrack. The real stand out of the film though is definitely David Strathairn, who does a great acting job as Edward R. Murrow, personifying everything we come to expect of a respected newscaster of that era.

    Mission : Impossible III (2006)  B-

For all intents and purposes J.J. Abrams' Mission : Impossible III is more or less an overblown "Alias" episode. But it actually works to it's benefit. Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt, and faces more missions that should be impossible to complete. This time around though, things get a little more personal when his wife gets put in danger because of his line of work. That concept; while not exactly unique, is a welcome addition to the Mission : Impossible mythos that usually ignores the personal lives of the agents. Don't get me wrong though, as this is still most definitely an action movie and a lot of those sequences are pretty enjoyable to watch. Sure there's a lot of suspension of disbelief, but this is a good action flick.

  • About a decade ago, I came across a "fan-sub" of an anime mini-series (or Original Animated Video) called "Video Girl Ai." Being a hopeless romantic then (still kinda am), I immediately fell in love with the story and characters. I found out that it was only based on a portion of a 15 volume Japanese manga (comic-book) written by Masakazu Katsura (or K2R). Unfortunately at that time, it was only released in it's original Japanese format. That did not deter me from reading it though, and I actually read the series with the Japanese manga on one hand, and a fan made written translation printed on paper on the other hand. That's how much I loved it. About five years later, Viz Media begins to release the Video Girl Ai manga with english translations to the western market. Although it took them almost six years to complete all 15 volumes, it was still absolutely worth re-reading them again.

The plot of Video Girl Ai while basic in nature (romantic triangle and such), is done so well in the romantic comedy genre, that it was easy for me to get caught up in the story and characters. You've got the story of a boy named Yota, who is in love with a girl named Moemi, but she likes his best friend named Takashi. Takashi however isn't really interested in Moemi which breaks her heart, and Yota being the kind of guy that he is actually encourages her to keep trying to win his best friend's heart, despite him actually wanting her for himself. In despair of his situation he comes across a magical video shop that gives him a VHS tape of a "video girl." The thing is that this video girl named "Ai" ("Love" in Japanese), literally comes out of his TV screen and eventually offers to help Yota win Moemi's heart. As it usually goes with this kind of romantic stories though, Ai falls for Yota and things get complicated.

Yes, this story is a fantasy soap opera, but it's written with great heart, that it was hard not to empathize with the characters' and their situations. The story overall excells in showing the power of love between people, and is quite honestly one of the motivators that got me the courage to be with my girlfriend (now my fiancee) in the first place. The artwork is also one of the best I've ever seen in Japanese manga, which greatly enhances the enjoyment that comes with the book. K2R does some of the best renditions of females in Japanese manga, even though he does have a tendency to draw them in a lot of very provocative poses / situations (if you mind that is).

To this day, I consider Video Girl Ai to be one of the best fantasy romantic comedy stories out there. For people who love that genre, I most definitely recommend this series to you. Show some love for Ai.

  • Mission : Impossible III is released this weekend. After all the "craziness" that Tom Cruise has been demonstrating the past year, I actually considered to NOT go see the movie. If it wasn't for the fact J.J. Abrams and Philip Seymour Hoffman are onboard, I probably would have gone through with that decision. That's right, Tom Cruise's personal life as a celebrity is actually affecting my opinion on his professional career. I've always respected him as an actor, but the whole "jumping the couch," Katie Holmes, war on prescription drugs, and scientology things got a little too much for me. It's a shame really, but I just can't see him the same way again. M:I3 will be the first test to see how much I can still enjoy his acting works, despite him being... Tom Cruise. I guess I'll just root for the bad guy.

I remember over a decade ago having a random argument about Tom Cruise vs Brad Pitt as actors.  In my eyes; especially now, it looks like Brad Pitt is winning that fight.
