Month: December 2006

  • Well, another year is done with. I don't know about everybody else out there, but while 2006 wasn't exactly a perfect year, I have to honestly say that it's been a really good one for me. I'll do a recap of my past year in an upcoming blog, but right now I'll just like to say...

So Long 2006, it's been great!
Hello to 2007, I hope you're even better.

With celebrating a new year, we need some lightshow. So howabout a game that produces lots of flash, fireworks, and particle effects?...

    Rocky Balboa  (2006)  B+

Despite the seemingly negative reception by some movie goers thinking that a Rocky movie couldn't possibly be good anymore, I went in it anyway and came out a much happier man for doing so. "Rocky Balboa" is a good dramatic movie, no doubt about it. Sylvester Stallone does most everything right in directing and writing the movie. The film is nostalgic of what happened in the past, but it works in contrast to the present time, giving us the perception that a "has been" boxer couldn't possibly get back in the ring. That's right, it is another great traditional underdog story. This isn't a boxing heavy movie though as there really are a lot of dialogue and character driven plots. In fact, this film had a lot of great inspirational speeches that anyone can take to heart. The final boxing match though is one great experience. Several rounds were pretty much like an actual pay per view televised programming, that it was very easy to get sucked into what looks like a real boxing match. The audience in my movie theater even cheered on or grimaced at proper moments like they would at home watching the big fight. This is probably the final Rocky movie ever made, but I'm glad to see that it acts as a great book end to the franchise.

Akeelah and the Bee  (2006)  B+

How's this for a subject for an underdog movie? A Spelling Bee. Not convinced? That's unfortunate, because "Akeelah and the Bee" probably even beats out "Rocky Balboa" as the underdog movie to beat. What a wonderful, touching, and inspirational movie this is. The basic plot premise isn't exactly the most original, but you should be touched by the journey that Akeelah goes through to get to the Spelling Bee finals. Akeelah by the way is incredibly talently acted by the young Keke Palmer, who deserves great recognition for her work here. In fact, I'll go as far and say that Keke deserves a nomination for best actress in the Academy Awards. The rest of the cast are also well done, although some caricatures straight out of other underdog movies are present and alive here. Director / writer Doug Atchison does a great job of keeping us interested in what should be a boring competition, but damn if you don't get excited by people spelling in this movie. One of the best feel good movies around right now, don't miss it.

  • At work today, I was walking towards my break when I heard this "dink - dink - dink" sound. I looked and noticed that somebody was driving with a flat tire on the right rear side of his car.  Somewhat surprising to myself, I decided to chase the car on foot, to try and tell him that he is practically driving on his rims (well, actually he is). Unfortunately, even with my arms waving and yelling at the person and all, I couldn't keep up with a car going about 20mph and never got him to stop. As much as I wanted to be a good samaritan, I decided on the "oh well, he'll learn soon enough," and went on my merry way.

Well, maybe not exactly on my merry way. About an hour before that occurred, I accidentally bumped my head really hard on a low ceiling. It hurt like hell and I could feel the impact go through my whole body, as if I was a cartoon character. Three hours go by, my head is sore, the feelings in my fingers, arms, and legs seems to be going a little numb, and I'm starting to think I had a concussion. Ofcourse I considered that it's all in my head and I'm imagining having a concussion, because if I really did, then I may not be waking up after I go to sleep, and this might be my last blog post..... ever.
That's a bit of a grim outlook, so I'm sure I'll be alright, and you can expect a blog post tomorrow like normal.... or will you?

  • You Are 56% Cynical
Yes, you are cynical, but more than anything, you're a realist.
You see what's screwed up in the world, but you also take time to remember what's right.

  • Movies I've seen recently...

    Superman II (1980)  B+

When I was a young boy, the theatrical release of "Superman II" by Richard Lester was probably my most favorite Superhero movie ever. Re-watching it again, I still feel that magic. Unfortunately, with age, I noticed that there is quite a bit of campiness and illogical occurances that I wouldn't tolerate if this movie was released these days. The saving grace that makes me still find "Superman II" entertaining is the overal story and the cast. Watching Superman fight three evil Kryptonians is still quite the guilty pleasure to watch, and the whole relationship between Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder is still a joy. Still a fun comic-book movie, can't deny that.

Superman II : The Richard Donner cut (2006)  B

I'm not going to go into detail on what happened between the original Superman movie director that is Richard Donner and what ended up being the theatrical cut of "Superman II" by Richard Lester (wikipedia here), but it bears to mention that there is an overall difference in how the two cuts ended up. First thing that needs to be said is that while this is technically the final Richard Donner cut, the movie is still not finished due to the fact that he was literally unable to finish shooting all the footage that needed to be shot. Due to the unfinished nature, the movie editing and pacing feels very much off. However the overall feel of the movie is very much like the first Superman movie, a little serious with a subtle somber sense overall. Some campiness and illogical occurances are still present though, and the ending here isn't exactly to my liking. Christopher Reeve however does get to show more acting in a more emotionally serious Superman here, that adds additional depth to the character. But the biggest positive is the return of Marlon Brando to the movie, which completely validates the existence of "Superman II : Richard Donner cut."

    The Lake House (2006)  C+

Being a guy, I admit that "the Lake House" is absolutely a "chick flick." However that doesn't necessarily make the movie bad. The story itself is a rather fascinating concept in how Keanu Reeves gets to communicate with Sandra Bullock, two years apart from each other, using the mail box by the Lake House. However, there are huge illogical plot holes in how it works. The movie doesn't seem to even bother explaining certain things, and we are just suppose to take them with a suspension of disbelief. Still, it's a rather sweet story, the visuals are really nice, and the way the voice overs of the letters work was excellently done.

American Pie Presents : The Naked Mile (2006)  C

After "Band Camp," it seems that we are going to get annual video releases of the American Pie brand on teenage sex comedies. If you are a fan of teenage sex comedies, you must already know that the genre is full of cliches, cheap sex humor, sight gags, and some love story to ground things. Once in a while you get one that is executed so well, with very memorable scenes, that it doesn't matter if it was all just "dumb fun." Sadly, I will have to say that "The Naked Mile" does not add anymore to the genre than what has already been seen before. Sure there are some moments worth experiencing, but for the most part, this is simply a throwaway movie that does not necessarily need to be seen by many. For the fans though, it bears to mention this is the first introduction of a nicer Stifler, that is more a "Jim" type from the first movies.

  • I had about 12 hours of sleep today and I think I'm half well enough to go to work today. Maybe some activity will make me feel better.

  • talk about deja vu, but I'm sick again around the same time like last year. Fever and cold it seems, quite possibly the standard Flu. Just this past day, I was in bed for over 15 hours! This bites, because I don't want to have to call in for work the next few days, as I have double play coming up for me. I do feel better though, so we'll see what happens.
