  • Recently, the nominees for the Oscars; 79th Annual Academy awards, were announced. As is usually the case, a backlash about how "the Oscars lost touch with the people" is once again being heard. Last I checked, the Academy's priorities are to nominate movies that DESERVE to be nominated, not just because it's popular with the people. If they were to connect with the people's wishes, then we would be seeing Pirates of the Caribbean 2 in the best picture nominees (that's where the People's choice awards comes in). There's a difference between a quality movie and what is simply a popular movie folks. The five films nominated for best picture of the year are all good movies that "the people" should watch anyways. If they did, then maybe they'll understand why the Academy nominated those movies. Ofcourse, the Academy awards isn't perfect by any means; snubbing Sacha Baron Cohen and all, but the Oscars is still the premiere award show dedicated to the art of film making. As somebody who loves the movies, I look forward to this award show every year.
