    Atonement  (2007)  B

Based on the book by Ian McEwan, "Atonement" goes for the beautiful visuals and it's dramatic story. The pacing is slow and methodical, and seems to kinda go from set piece to set piece though. In many cases the story is told in flashbacks, as there are multiple point of views in how things happened. However the plot is quite memorable, and it's definitely something to think about after the end of the movie. The actors are also very good in this, especially the young Saoirse Ronan who showcases a lot of intense acting considering her age. Keira Knightley and James McAvoy are also excellent in their roles as the tragic lovers. One thing that really stood out for me with Atonement is actually the musical score, which cleverly uses the sound of a typewriter as one of the "instruments" heard.

Walk Hard : The Dewey Cox Story  (2007)  B+

Written by Jake Kasdan and Judd Apatow, "Walk Hard : The Dewey Cox Story" is a hilarious satire of the many musical biopics out there like "Ray" or "Walk The Line." I honestly did not think I'd like the movie as much as I did, but from the very first scenes all the way to the final shot, I thought this is up there as one of the funniest films of 2007. There's a lot of acting cameos by many comedians from "Saturday Night Live" alumni to people like Jack Black to the usual supporting cast of the Apatow family. However it's the great performance by John C. Reilly that makes this movie, and wow he really IS Dewey Cox. The songs are also quite good and funny too, going through the early beginnings of rock and roll, to the hip-hop sampling era. Keep in mind that because of all the inside jokes on the music biopic, this movie is not for everybody. This also isn't like the other recent Judd Apatow films too, as it caters more towards those who appreciate parody and satire humor.

  • oy, first I easily lose my chance to win $51, and now I feel physical pain. Because of this weather, my hands have been extra dry lately. Extra brittle is more like it. I gained a cut on my right thumb that prevents me from doing too much with that, and small cuts on the back of my right hand too. Basically it hurts a little when I use my right hand, and it hurts extra more when I need to use my right thumb to pinch / hold something. Now the Gods must have thought I need to pass the pain along to my left hand, because I accidentally spilled boiling hot water on it, and now I have 1st degree burns on my left hand fingers (particulary the "F-U" one). At least I can still type? 2007 wants to leave a mark on me or something before it ends I guess.

On another note, we have a baby kitty cat in our house now. It's not ours, but we are watching it for two weeks. It's very cute, despite the fact that it loves to "attack" people's ankles, which I guess is kinda cute too. Let's say it wants to "hug" people's ankles. My brown dog already wants to "play" with it though, while the white one doesn't seem to care either way. We have the cat take over a section of our house so that they are separated from each other, as we wouldn't want anything to happen to it. It's funny though, because usually my brown dog would give me a signal to follow her and open the door to let her out to pee, but now she does that to tell me to let her see the cat.

Also finally finally after years and years of waiting, with UFC 79 : Nemesis I'll get to see the fight I've been anticipating for a long time. Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell versus Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva. UFC vs PrideFC all over again. Being that I'm more of a Pride kinda guy, I'm rooting for Wandy for the win. Honestly though, it could go either way because these two fighters have been coming off two straight loses each. They should have fought two years ago, but I'll get what I can get. The Matt Hughes versus George St.Pierre fight should be pretty good too.

*edit update* Here's some pictures of kitty, and we just found out that it's prospective owners have changed their mind about having a cat now. Kitty here is going to need to find another owner.

  • $51! That's how much I could have won just this past day.
I went to get gas an hour ago right after work, and I noticed that I have my lotto tickets in my wallet. I usually have a set of numbers I play, and I usually get six games worth of those. I noticed that the last game I had ended over a week ago. I decided to buy six plays on my number again, and went home to check on the "what if" situation with the days I missed. Sure enough, this past night's numbers contained three of my regular numbers, plus the mega number. The most I ever got in my life are two numbers plus the mega, which got me $10. Three numbers and the mega however gets me $51. It could have been mine damnit! I swear, the one time I did not buy a set of lotto tickets, this is what happens. That would have been a nice lavish dinner for two too. Maybe next time?

Something isn't quite right with the resolution you've selected. Maybe it's time for a different one?
What I'm Listening To This Week...

  • You know I'm not exactly a person that sends out holiday greeting cards to friends and families. Lately however, I am starting to feel a little guilty, when receiving Christmas greeting cards from my friends and families. My wife wanted to send some out this year, but that didn't happen since she mistakenly put me in charge of that. Maybe next year folks. For now...

    Once  (2007)  A

The modern musical is what "Once" is, because it has sequences that involves people singing to further the plot, but the difference is that this movie does it naturally. This may be a simple story of a man played by Glen Hansard who is a singer songwriter with a broken heart, singing what he feels and thinks to anyone who would listen. Luckily one of those listeners is a woman played by Markéta Irglová who herself has a musical background with the piano, and also has a broken heart. Together they end up creating music together, and it's those moments that make this movie a wonderful experience. This is simply one of THE BEST films I've seen for 2007.
If you appreciate the art and soul of making music, song writing, and what music can mean to people, do
yourself a favor and watch this movie. I'm even going the extra step and buying
the soundtrack for Once, because I loved the songs in the movie that much.

    The Hoax  (2006)  B+

Based on actual events that happened in the '70s, Richard Gere plays Clifford Irving, a writer on a career low who decides to convince people that he is writing an autobiography of the mysterious powerful eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes. "The Hoax" surprisingly to me is pretty much a "caper flick." It really is because you see how he, his friend Dick Suskind who is wonderfully played by Alfred Molina, and his wife Edith Irving played by Marcia Gay Harden, carefully tries and lays out this plan to pull off this big stunt that will result in them getting over a million dollars, not to mention getting this book published. Richard Gere does a great job in his role as this guy who really is like a con-artist being so good at lying, and it's fun to watch how they pull off one of the greatest hoax in history.

  • After a month of playing Rock Band, I'm going to boldy say it now, I give up on the Guitar Hero franchise. That's right, I'm choosing a side, and it's Rock Band (created by Harmonix, ironically the ones who were behind Guitar Hero 1 & 2). I just can't see myself playing a guitar game that doesn't have drums or vocal functions, as it'll just feel like a rip-off. Rock Band is the complete package, and unless the inevitable Guitar Hero 4 comes in a budget price, I don't see myself pick it up.

I'll also say this while I'm at it. After a year of release, the Nintendo Wii is more or less a failure of a gaming console. That's right, besides the fact that it is currently "king" of video game console sales, besides the fact that the demand for it is still higher than supply (that's another subject right there), this gaming console has been "collecting dust" a lot more than I hoped. There's hardly any games I really want to play on it! As much as the PlayStation3 has been billed as the console that has no games, that actually has more to offer gamers in terms of actual quality gaming than the Wii. So far, the real games that I really enjoyed on the Wii are Super Mario Galaxy, Wario-Ware Smooth Moves, Big Brain Academy, Wii Sports, and GameCube remakes like Resident Evil 4 or Zelda Twilight Princess. Even the vaunted Virtual Console feature is a little bit of a cheat, since I'm just re-playing old games that I've played a long time ago already. I'm spending more time with the "Everybody Votes" channel, than I'm actually playing games on it. The only reason I got the Wii was for Wii-Sports, and I'm guessing a lot of people had the same idea. That game is fun, but it can only last so long. I don't think there's much games on the horizon that I'm even looking forward to in the console's future. *sigh* at least I have the xbox 360 to keep me occupied as a gamer. Nintendo, you disappoint me.
