  • This past friday morning KROQ 106.7‘s Kevin & Bean show, held their very first public “Miss Double D-cember Pagaent” at the Slidebar Rock & Roll Bar in Fullerton, CA. They are also doing this event as an opportunity to support the Marines’ Toys For Tots Foundation, or as they like to call it, “Toys for Tatas.” I’m a big fan of that morning talk show, so I definitely wanted to go to this event, and I had two plush toy cats to donate. It was a free event, but you have to donate a toy to the foundation. It also has a full bar in the cafe, and oddly enough it’s also an all-age party.

Just like the last time they were conveniently having a live show nearby, and straight from my Thursday night graveyard shift I headed over to the event. The doors opened at 5:30AM but I couldn’t get there ’till 6:05AM, and by that time I was maybe around the 60th-80th person in the stand-by line. The only way I was getting in, is if about that many people who are already inside decides to leave. Oh, I forgot to mention, rain was in the weather forecast.

Slowly and surely, my place in line was itching forward towards the door. I got to talk to other Kevin & Bean fans who were in line with me, and I get to see the hot girls in line who seem to conveniently get invited to the front of the line. Bastards. Ofcourse it did not help that it was occasionally drizzling on us. By around 7:45AM, the rain started picking up and we were starting to get drenched. Some people decided to give up and leave the line, which got me to about the 20th person in line by about 8:15AM. I was that close to get in, that short of them telling us that we definitely will not be getting in, I’m staying in line, rain or shine. The day apparently chose rain, because by about 8:30AM, it started really pouring and I was pretty much taking a shower outdoors.

Fate would have it, I really was not meant to get in because by 8:45AM the fire marshall dispersed the line and no one else was getting in at that point. All I had to do at that point was give the marines the toy donation, head to my car, and get out of my wet clothes into something more dry. Luckily I changed clothes after work, so my dry work clothes were available for me. I was in the rain so long that my hands were getting numb that at one point when I was wiping my glasses dry, it just fell off my hands down on the ground because my hands just couldn’t keep them up anymore. I rested and warmed up in my car for almost a half hour before driving home.

I’m disappointed sure, but I expected that this might happen, especially considering that there were people who were already waiting since 2AM to get in. I had to try though. One of the people in line said that “we must either be insane or really hardcore fans to stand out in the rain like this,” and I told her that just say that we are hardcore fans. In reality, I guess we were just really insane.

p.s. At least one of my top choices won the competition, so congrats to Kassidy. Kevin & Bean’s Miss Double D-cember for 2008.
