Movies I've Seen Recently...
Cloverfield (2008) B+Despite some flaws in the movie, I loved "Cloverfield," and have seen it twice already.
I like how Director Matt Reeves, writer Drew Goddard, and producer J.J. Abrams, did not make a traditional monster movie. In fact, I would say
that Cloverfield wasn't a monster movie at all. This is a movie about
regular people trying to survive an attack on their city by unknown
reasons. This is a movie about what somebody is capable of doing when
someone they love needs help. This is a movie that wants us to relive
the same experiences they went through, hence the First Person
perspective of what they were seeing. People who go into Cloverfield
thinking it is only going to focus on the monster, clearly are hoping
for a different movie.
Also, I hope you can stand watching shaky cam footage, because that's the whole movie.I've been compiling Cloverfield related links as listed below, and several of them help explain the background story that the
movie couldn't tell.
*SPOILERS OFCOURSE*
- about the thing that fell in the water at the very last scene before credits -
- news cast about Chuai Station disaster (monster's first appearance) -

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) CI'm somewhat a fan of musicals, but I gotta be honest here, "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" was a disappointment. The songs weren't really that memorable, almost all the characters were not interesting, and the plot was kinda boring. Okay, I admit that I like the very grim and dark story of the lead character played expectedly great by Johnny Depp, but all the blood squirting and people made into pies for other people to eat, could not save the movie for me. The best thing about Sweeney Todd is actually the performance by Helena Bonham Carter, because she pretty much stole all the scenes she was in.
The Host (2006) BA little from left field, "The Host" is closer to a traditional monster film, but at the same time it really isn't. There's a bit of a mix of everything here. It has campiness, comedy, satire, political commentaries, thrilling moments, dramatic moments, social commentaries, horror, and ofcourse the CGI monster. I suppose the negative would be that it has a mix of everything, because while I was having fun watching The Host, I was starting to get confused on whether I should laugh at somebody getting killed by the monster or be shocked. I really did enjoy the film and would recommend it to anybody who likes monster movies.
