    Cloverfield (2008)  B+

Despite some flaws in the movie, I loved "Cloverfield," and have seen it twice already.
    I like how
Director Matt Reeves, writer Drew Goddard, and producer J.J. Abrams, did not make a traditional monster movie. In fact, I would say
that Cloverfield wasn't a monster movie at all. This is a movie about
regular people trying to survive an attack on their city by unknown
reasons. This is a movie about what somebody is capable of doing when
someone they love needs help. This is a movie that wants us to relive
the same experiences they went through, hence the First Person
perspective of what they were seeing. People who go into Cloverfield
thinking it is only going to focus on the monster, clearly are hoping
    for a different movie.
Also, I hope you can stand watching shaky cam footage, because that's the whole movie.

I've been compiling Cloverfield related links as listed below, and several of them help explain the background story that the
    movie couldn't tell.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) C

I'm somewhat a fan of musicals, but I gotta be honest here, "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" was a disappointment. The songs weren't really that memorable, almost all the characters were not interesting, and the plot was kinda boring. Okay, I admit that I like the very grim and dark story of the lead character played expectedly great by Johnny Depp, but all the blood squirting and people made into pies for other people to eat, could not save the movie for me. The best thing about Sweeney Todd is actually the performance by Helena Bonham Carter, because she pretty much stole all the scenes she was in.

    The Host (2006)  B

A little from left field, "The Host" is closer to a traditional monster film, but at the same time it really isn't. There's a bit of a mix of everything here. It has campiness, comedy, satire, political commentaries, thrilling moments, dramatic moments, social commentaries, horror, and ofcourse the CGI monster. I suppose the negative would be that it has a mix of everything, because while I was having fun watching The Host, I was starting to get confused on whether I should laugh at somebody getting killed by the monster or be shocked. I really did enjoy the film and would recommend it to anybody who likes monster movies.

  • I got to hand it to the video game Rock Band. I never appreciated the art of drumming until I played this game. In fact, I also increased my appreciation of singing after trying out certain songs here. Unlike the guitar controller where it doesn't really help teach you much about actually playing a real guitar, the singing and drumming portion however reflect their real life counter parts. I'm starting to listen to the drums more in songs, more so than I ever did before. I'm also analyzing the way I sing a little more than before. So imagine that, a video game that's actually teaching me some practical things.

  • Recently when I was walking my white dog, all of a sudden the "frasier dog" (Jack Russell
terrier) from across the street comes running towards us. Both dogs started sniffing each other and everything was okay, until the frasier dog (which was smaller than my dog) sniffed my dog the "wrong way." My white dog goes on a sprawl position, but the frasier dog doesn't like that and starts growling. I separated the two of them, while I notice the owner of the Jack Russell Terrier starts running towards him. It was a teenage boy and he held him back by... holding on to the dog's hips? Then the other owner runs towards him, and the teenage girl goes on to hold him back by... holding on to his front legs? I kinda said to them "just hold him by the collar, it'll be more secure." For whatever reason, they act like they do not understand me. The girl picks up their dog like a baby and walks away to their house.

Okay, I've always been taught that the best way to hold back a dog is by their collar. Is this holding on to the hips and front legs thing another way that I wasn't aware about? Or do they just don't know how to handle a dog properly? Not to mention he wasn't even leashed to be walking down the street. I'm just saying that I thought it was bizarre, with the way they handled the situation. What's the deal with not saying a word to me either? They may be asian, but I'm sure they speak english....

What I'm Listening To This Week...

  • About an hour before I left for work, my wife noticed that my white dog had a cut under his right eye, and it was bleeding. We figured that he cut it on the fence with the chicken wire, but it didn't seem so bad. I left for work and assumed the best. However, about an hour into my work shift, I get a call from my wife that she had to take my white dog to the emergency pet hospital because it started bleeding again. It turns out he needed stiches, because the cut is deeper than we thought. Four hours later at 2:30AM, my wife finally brought back our dog home. My poor wife, she has to be awake at 7:30AM for work, so she's not going to get as much sleep as she normally gets. As for the white dog, he seems a little more sad, probably because his stiches might be bothering him. All we need to do for the next week is give him some antibiotic pills, and in two weeks he'll be able to get the stiches out. aaawww, this is his first medical "emergency" too.

    Eastern Promises  (2007)  B

A mid-wife played by Naomi Watts gets caught up in the world of the Russian mob, when she gets involved with the diary of a young girl forced into prostitution who died giving birth to a baby girl. Viggo Mortensen does a convincing and excellent job as a russian driver of this particular Russian mob, who then gets dragged in further to it's criminal underbelly. Armin Mueller-Stahl also does a great job as the Russian boss who is really as evil as it gets, despite his outside personality of being a great family man. "Eastern Promises;" as directed by David Cronenberg, is a grim and dark look at this world of mobsters, and the lives that are destroyed. The movie is a little too methodical in it's pacing though, but the drama behind the characters is what makes the movie interesting.

    American Gangster  (2007)  B-

Honestly, I had some high hopes going into "American Gangster," but what I got is just a decently good movie about one of the most notorious gangsters in America's history. Denzel Washington once again does a great acting job playing Frank Lucas, making another memorable turn as a man who went down the criminal path in life, despite the fact that he honestly feels like he is helping "his people of Harlem." Russell Crowe plays a detective who despite his honesty in a job filled with corrupt cops, is actually down in his luck in his personal life. The two characters makes a nice constrast to each other and that's the dynamic of the film. The movie itself though is rather slow moving, and doesn't really pick up until a little around the half way point in what is a two and a half hours film.

    A Walk To Remember  (2002)  B-

The story is unoriginal, the plot is predictable, it feels like a made for tv movie, it can be a little melodramatic at times, and it's more or less a chick flick (correction : a teenage chick flick). Simply put, I'm not the target audience for "A Walk To Remember." However, call me a softy or whatever but I liked the movie anyway. In fact, I rewatched the DVD of it that I own, when I noticed that they were showing it on TV. Despite it's flaws, it does a good job to what the movie intended to be. Ofcourse it helps that I'm a little bias in favor of Mandy Moore, but whatever.

    Charlie's Angels  (2000)  D+

Rewatched this on TV, and "Charlie's Angels" is still as bad as I remember it. The plot is ridiculous, the scenes are all over the place, the action isn't even that good, with hardly any redeeming qualities to what is more or less a brainless music video.

    Wifey
: "Why are you watching this? I thought you didn't like it?"

    Me
    : "I don't."

    Wifey
: "You've watched over half the movie already."

    Me
    : "I know. I guess it's like watching a train wreck, and I couldn't
keep my eyes off at how bad it is. Besides, the camera seems to always
focus on the girl's butts a lot so that's a plus."

    Wifey
: *throws pillow at my face*

  • Had some near house scares this past day.

When I was taking my shower, I noticed that the hot water wasn't working. Obviously I was thinking it's the water heater in the garage that's the problem. Then I hear my dogs barking and I starting thinking the worse. "Ohmygod, is the heater on fire?" I get out of the bathroom thinking I'll be seeing smoke or something, but by the time I get to the garage things looked normal. I take a look and the water heater has a leaking sound, and the flame underneath it (the pilot light?) is a lot more pronounced than I've ever noticed. It's like the fire underneath is getting larger. I turn off the water heater, but now I have to wait to see about getting it fixed. No hot water for now...

Speaking of water, something almost happened because of the cat we are keeping watch. Since my brown dog doesn't get along with the cat, we leave the kitty in one of the rooms upstairs with a bathroom. Well, when we checked on the cat, he apparently was able to turn on the bathtub's faucet. The bathtub was plugged up, so it was filled with water, and it was almost at the point where it would have overflowed. Stupid cat, could have flooded the room. Well, the cat isn't staying long with us anyways, in fact it's prospective owner is going to pick him up about four hours from now actually. Maybe I'll say my good byes right now before I sleep, since my wife is going to handle the "transaction."
