  • Movies I've Seen Recently...

    Kung Fu Panda (2008)  A-

Watching the stylized 2D rendered animated sequence at the beginning of
the movie, I had a feeling that "Kung Fu Panda" was going to be so much
more than your typical CGI animated feature. From beginning to end, I
was absolutely entertained, and had lots of fun. The visuals were very
very good, the humor had me laughing a lot, the kung fu training and
action sequences were excellent, memorable characters, and the voice talent were perfect. The
only fault I see with this is that the story is pretty simple and
predictable, but the execution of the whole thing was still absolutely
outstanding. Also, besides some winking towards typical Kung Fu film cliches,
there were hardly any unnecessary pop-culture references in a story
that is a self-contained universe to itself. An instant classic in my
    book.

You Don't Mess With The Zohan  (2008)  C+

Silly, stupid, unbelievable, stupid, amusing, oh and did I mention stupid? "You Don't Mess With The Zohan," is frankly a very broad comedy. It purposefully doesn't ground itself to any sort of realism, so expect scenes where the Zohan catches a flying bullet with his nostril, or him catching up to a speeding water boat by swimming like a dolphin, as some things that are meant to be seen as stupid funny. In actuality though, the movie is mostly stupid dumb. I've got to give the movie credit in that every scene is set up as a joke, as most comedies should try and do, but unfortunately I hardly laughed out loud at all throughout the near two hours of the film's runtime. The cast does a good enough job considering the material they are given, and Adam Sandler has brought to life another memorable character in his catalog of memorable characters. "...Zohan" is mostly a unique premise, and while not as funny as it thinks it really is, I was mostly amused and entertained to a certain degree. As cheesy as it was, I also appreciated the message the movie makes at the end.

    Wristcutters : A Love Story (2007)  C

What happens to you when you commit suicide? According to "Wristcutters : A Love Story," you end up in an alternate earth, containing the same exact things you'll find in the real earth; like jobs, laws, food, etc... Since it is a world full of people who killed themselves, things are just a bit more depressing, no smiling is allowed, and oddly enough weird things like levitating people and black hole portals trapped underneath the passenger seat of a beat up old car exists in this other earth. Interesting, quirky, and weird premise right? Yeah, that's true, but I found the whole thing a bit pretentious, slow, and boring. The cast are good for their roles, and the unique setting will keep you interested enough to see the story play out until the end. Overall, the movie itself could not sustain the weight of this ambitious premise.

  • As I've mentioned before, my cellphone is the "LG enV" and I love taking advantage of it's features. In particular, I've used the qwerty keyboard along with the notes and calendar features extensively. My cellphone pretty much is my organizer that I carry with me everywhere. Well something bad happened recently, when I found out that all the data that I entered in the calendar feature were completely gone! Birthdates, appointments, reminders, etc... all gone! I've used and preached about how wonderful it was to use the calendar feature of my phone, that it pains me to find out that there's apparently a reliability issue regarding it. I now have to figure out what needs to be reentered into my calendar again, and I also have to figure out how to back up that data, in the case that I might lose it again. Luckily, my contact list, notes, and other misc data haven't been erased.... yet? aarrgghhh, the trials and tribulations of relying on technology to make life easier. Sometimes it just bites you in the ass.

  • After realising that I haven't watched a new scripted show this past week, it just dawned on me that the 2007-2008 TV season is already over! The writer's strike really did a number to this season, as it seems the missing episodes really made a bit of a difference. Still the same though, I was more or less still happy with the shows I already follow, plus new ones that I will continue to follow when they come back in the next season.

My choice for best stand out TV show this past season, would have to go to "Lost." The show is knee deep in it's mythology already, and it officially has seperated the true fans from those who were just into it because it was the popular show to watch at the time. The depth that Lost has gone with it's story is very exciting, and it's now pretty much in the running as my most favorite TV show of all time (currently that goes to Neon Genesis Evangelion). Just two more seasons too, so I can't wait to see how things play out.
Runner-up mention has to go to "House," which really liven things up with it's new cast members.

My choice for best stand out NEW TV show this past season, would have to go to "Reaper." It also has it's own mythological story arc that it follows like Lost, and it also has a great ensemble of characters that makes the show enjoyable to watch. Besides, Reaper has one of the most enjoyable portrayal of the devil that I've seen around. Unfortunately, just like Lost however, this show isn't returning until 2009!
Runner-up mention has to go to "Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles," which clearly has a nice twist to an establish franchise.

    As for the other shows...
"The Office" has been good this year too, but the post writer's strike episodes were sort of lacking to me. "Supernatural" upped the ante with it's story, and the two lead stars continue to be really good. "Heroes" has fallen by the wayside in my opinion and is treading a thin line to being all flash and no substance. Which reminds me of "Smallville," which I wish would just end already, although this season has been tolerable to a certain degree. The animated shows I watch, like "South park," "The Simpsons," "Family
    Guy
," "American Dad," and "The Spectacular Spider-man," have all been
good. "Mythbusters," "Lewis Black's Root Of All Evil," "Human Weapon," and "Fight Quest," were great to watch, while "American Gladiators" has
it's moments and continues on this summer.

Honestly though, I'm not too bummed out of not having my favorite shows for awhile. It'll free up a little bit of time for me, plus the summer programming isn't without it's own merits. Besides shows like "Monk," "Robot Chicken," "The Venture Bros," and "30 Days" returning, variety shows that I regularly watch, like "Attack Of The Show," "The Soup," "Inside MMA," and "At the movies..." continues on. TV isn't such a bad thing folks, you just got to know what to watch.

  • Do you know how much you are suppose to tip?
Do you know when you are suppose to tip?

I'm sure a lot of people have their own little rules on how much you are suppose to tip, and usually it revolves around food. That's the general consensus right? You tip a waiter or a pizza delivery person, etc... I'm guessing that a lot of people follow the 15-20% tip rule when it comes to restaurants and such, although I was told with no real fact to back it up, that we are really suppose to tip about 17%. That percentage rule doesn't apply to all tipping though, as you don't really tip the pizza delivery person a percent of the total cost do you?

Now howabout hotel maid services, furniture deliveries, auto mechanics, etc? I think most people forget to tip them. However just because a job provides a personal service doesn't mean you have to tip them, like desk clerks or tour guides. You got to think however, what's the difference? There's a certain sense of descrimination to who you should or shouldn't tip isn't there?

What I've been listening to lately...

  • Right when I was getting to leave for work, all of a sudden I see what is probably the biggest centipede looking thing that I've ever seen crawling on the floor. I quickly tell my wife to hold on to the dogs, she does so and takes them straight to the garage. We wouldn't want the dogs to try and take care of the bug themselves, just in case that thing decides to crawl inside one of them. I went to grab a sandal to squish it, but the bug crawls underneath one of the sofas. I moved the sofa aside and begin to squish the bug with my sandal, but apparently the carpet was cushioning the blows, so it was still alive and crawls back underneath the sofa. We moved the sofa again, but it was gone!

For a few minutes, me and my wife were just moving things around trying to find where it was hiding underneath. The rug on the carpet? The table? The other sofa? We were also still debating the best way to kill it, from bug spray, to the vacuum cleaner, etc... we opted to use one of those sticky mouse trap pads. Turning more things over, we finally found it hiding underneath a couple of boxes in the corner of the room. As soon as the bug was in sight, I dropped the sticky pad on top of it (sticky pad face down). The bug was trying to move away but the sticky pad worked, he was stuck and couldn't escape anymore. Using the small box the mouse trap came from, I scooped it up inside it, wrapped it in a bag, and threw it in the trash. ech, I hate those kinds of bugs. The wormy snakey slithery type bugs. Gives me the creeps.

I did have to call my work to tell them I was going to be a little late, on account that I was fighting a bug. That's right "me versus the bug," and the person at work thought it was pretty hilarious. It is kinda funny, when I word it like that.

  • This past night; Saturday May 31, 2008, was probably one of the most important nights for the growing sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). EliteXC and CBS Sports had the hard task of airing a free MMA event in national primetime TV, despite the fact that this sport is still seen as controversially too violent outside of Cable/Satellite/PayPerView. In fact MMA still hasn't been sanctioned in every state, which is a hurdle to get the sport more legitimized in the public's eye. "CBS and EliteXC present : Saturday Night Fights" was the name of the show, and it hopes to be the launch pad for having the mass audience embrace this sport like they already do for basketball, football, etc... The International Fight League has already tried it's luck on the primetime hours with the minor TV network "myNetworkTV" in 2007, but airing MMA on CBS is a totally different league altogether. So how did CBS and EliteXC do with their inaugural MMA show? Did they succeed in what they set out to do? In a way, yes and no.

"EliteXC : Primetime" was definitely entertaining, exciting, and will probably bring new fans to the sport. The spectacle was there, with the female dancers, the fireworks, and the flashy fighter entrances. A portion of the program educating people about the rules and techniques of MMA was a welcome thing for them to do, for those who are just now getting exposed to the sport. The fight card was really good and arguably better than some MMA shows that are on Pay Per View. Everything was set out to attract casual and serious TV sports fans, so what could go wrong? Technically, this turned out to be a rocky start for CBS and EliteXC.

"The best fight of the night was the Gina Carano vs Kaitlin Young match." That's right, the best fight of the night was of the female fighters. For the unitiated who thinks that MMA is primarily a man's sport, this is probably shocking to hear. As somebody who have seen several female MMA fights, this wasn't surprising to me, as the women are more than capable of putting up a good fight. However is it really in the sports best interest, when in this publicly high profile inaugural primetime network TV fight card that consists of mostly men, the ladies were the ones that won the night?

Conspiracy theorists have speculated that because of the very public nature of this show, CBS and EliteXC did not want the fights to get "too violent." It's been speculated that the referees were told to stop any of the fights earlier than expected, before anybody got so injured that it might get "too ugly" for primetime TV. This speculation applied the most to the two main fights, and the MMA fans were not happy because of that. A middleweight title match for Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith ended as a no contest by doctor's decision, which to MMA fans is like watching a playoff season basketball game end the 4th quarter on a tie and not continue into overtime to determine a winner. Then the main fight featuring internet street fighting sensation Kimbo Slice vs James Thompson, also ended with a controversial (especially to MMA fans) referee stoppage. Kimbo Slice was built and hyped up for a long time now as this up and coming rags to riches fighter, but he honestly did not perform as well as he should have this past night, especially considering that he is "the face" of EliteXC : Primetime too.

There were other problems that CBS and EliteXC has to address that ruined the allure of MMA this past night. After one of the fights ended in controversy, you can clearly hear the audience chanting "Bull$#!^" several times, which made me wonder what happened to CBS' censor button. Luckily the cussing occured past 10PM, which is technically safe from FCC fines, but still most likely something the CBS network would rather not have happened. It also did not help that the show went 45+ minutes over it's time slot cancelling the local news, so those who put it on timer with their DVR aren't happy. Some CBS affiliates even purposely delayed the show until midnight (reportedly replacing it's time slot with a block of kids shows) because they feared that MMA was still not ready for free primetime network TV. Maybe it really wasn't, and CBS should have followed NBC's decision to air their own MMA show "Strikeforce" at 4AM when everybody would be asleep already.

At this time, it's still unknown to me how the show did in the ratings. I'm hoping that it did well enough for CBS to continue airing free MMA on primetime network TV. Hopefully this show did increase public awareness to what is currently suppose to be "the fastest growing sport in the world," despite the faults with this particular event. To be fair to the main complaints about it, there are technical reasons behind those controversial
referee stoppages, so I wouldn't go so far to say that the whole thing
was "fixed," which is definitely a stigma that MMA must thoroughly
avoid. "EliteXC : Primetime" was definitely one of the most fun MMA shows I've seen, thoroughly enjoyable all the way. Just ease up on the dancing girls, stalling too much between fights, and less momentum killing commercial breaks.

p.s. there's another thing very common with MMA, and that's "cauliflower ears." This show of all shows really really makes the audience know about it.
