  • This past night, the "Meg & Dia" band returned to perform once again at "Chain Reaction" in Anaheim, California. I can mark this as one of the best and most memorable nights, in my following this band for about a little over two years now. Part of the reason is because the dedicated "MaD" fan base who call ourselves "boardies" (MaD message "board") were there in significant numbers to see the band. I usually go alone to concerts, but when it comes to MaD, I actually have friends that I get to meet up with. Since I've been a constant attendee to their shows here near my parts,
the band themselves (and their manager) recognizes me already, if not by name but by face, so that in itself always adds to the experience.

We were standing in line for about two hours before the doors opened, so by the time we got in, we had clear pickings to go to the front of the stage. The rest of the boardies did exactly that, but me on the otherhand, I've always rather stay near the back since I want to use my camera without worrying about having to deal with getting squeezed in. This time around I was going to try something different with my camera, in that I wasn't going to record Meg & Dia's whole set. I was going to pick and choose which songs I want on video, and this time I was going to actually take photos to the ones that I'm not recording. While wasting time, at one point while I was playing with my cellphone, Dia must have
recognized me or something when she walked by, because she surprisingly patted my
shoulder as she passed me (I was all big smiles for several minutes after that).

Starting at 8PM, "Danger Radio" performed as the opening act, and I got to admit that they did not sound bad at all. They had this danceable rock thing going, and I was really enjoying myself listening to them in their thirty minutes set. By 8:45PM, "Jonezetta" did their thirty minutes set, and I have to say that I wasn't necessarily as thrilled with their performance like I was last year when I saw them last. They did play new songs off their upcoming album, so maybe that might have contributed to my reaction to their set.

9:45PM rolls around and Meg & Dia started their performance, in what is their first sold out show of their first headlining tour. I thought they had an overall good setlist for the night, opening with "Strawberry Waltz," which is a classic from their rare "Our Home Is Gone" album (proud to have in my possession). They also played three songs from their upcoming new album that comes out early next year, and they sounded great. Ofcourse the usual tour mainstays from their album "Something Real" were in the set as well. They even had a one encore song to end the night, which is just too bad for some of the people in the audience who left prior to that. Remember people, if the venue's lights don't go back on after the "last" song, then it's not over. While I thought their performance was "epic" to say the least, Chain Reaction did have the main vocals mic volume a little lower than I preferred, which made it hard to hear Dia's singing sometimes. It was a great forty-five minutes of their eleven songs set though, plus with the bulk of the boardies up front acting all "crazy" to the band's enjoyment, it was easily a memorably enjoyable performance.

It was 10:30PM, but the night was not over yet! Before we were kicked out of the venue, the band's manager Mike Kaminsky told me to tell the rest of the boardies to make sure to stick around for "something." While we tried to stay inside Chain Reaction as long as possible, we decided to stay near their tour van in the parking lot instead. Once outside I witnessed what was the largest "meet & greet" that I've ever seen the band have to do. At first I was actually concerned about whether the band was going to do their usual spontaneous meet & greets like they do when they are the opening act in other band's tours, because this time they are the headliners, and the majority of the crowd is there to see them. It's a good thing my concerns weren't needed.

Waiting outside a good while, the crowd started dying down a little bit, and Mike K approached us and asked for five of us boardies to follow him. I was part of that group that followed him, and we approached a car near by, where it looked like somebody was playing with the stereo system. At that point I could guess what was going to happen, we were going to listen to the new album! Once we were there, Mike asked us to pick a number, so I was thinking "track number?" We chose "five" at first, but he quietly says "they did five inside already" and asked us to pick another one, which I then said "nine." We got in the car and he said that as soon as it's over, make sure to step out of the car, "oh, and don't record anything." Sure enough, we got to hear a track off their upcoming new album. It was a song that I've seen them do a live performance of on youtube though; "One Sail, One Sea" but the studio version was ofcourse better than the audio quality found on youtube. As soon as the song was over, we unfortunately had to get out of the car, and the next batch of boardies were up next. How's that for fan service?

After the crowd really started to die down even more, we boardies started to spend more time with the band. Lead guitarist Carlo was happy buzzed from drinking, and at one point he was singing a Jonas Brothers song with some of the boardies. I was talking to bass guitarist Jon for some advice and tips on how to play the bass guitar, so that was cool and informative. Jon even told me that he noticed me and the boardies in line before the show, but thought it might be weird to just all of a sudden approach us (c'mon it's not). Drummer Nick at one point was talking about being drenched in sweat and comparing it to a Carl's Jr commercial, which I thought was funny. Plus we got to meet Nick's mom, who said that we were by far the best group of fans she's ever seen, and thought that this night was the best of the tour because of our audience participation while the band was performing. Lastly, throughout all these times, it turns out that me and lots of other boardies have never gotten a group picture with the whole band together, so we did just that. We ended the night almost two hours after their set was over, saying goodbye to the band and vice versa. August 30, 2008, at the Chain Reaction in Anaheim, CA, was another great Meg & Dia experience to remember.

  • For anybody out there wanting to get into graphic novels, I thought I'd blog up a list of recommended titles to check out. The main majority of these books can be read in it's entirety through one collected edition, but there are titles that are only available through multiple volumes. Hyperlinks go mostly to amazon.com, where you can read the readers' comments for impressions. If not amazon.com, some of the links will take you to the wikipedia page, while others will take you to the reviews I myself wrote up in this blog. This reminds me, that I need to try and do reviews for all these titles as time rolls by.

  • With California having the "Hands Free" law now, there's one epidemic that's been going around, people with horrible blue-tooth ear pieces. Horrible not in the design of it (that's another matter), but horrible in sound quality. Yeah I know it must be an inconvenience being forced to buy a blue tooth device for a cellphone (sarcasm right there), and yeah I know it's tempting to just get the cheap ones, but it does not make it easier for the other person on the other end of the line to have a proper conversation. Biggest problem I hear from the crappy blue-tooth devices out there, persistent echo effects that makes it seem like you are talking to two people, and yourself right back at you. Quite annoying.

While we're on the subject involving cellphones, people need to think twice about using their video recording function on their phones. The majority of phones out there have crappy quality cameras, which means that them capturing a moment on a cellphone video becomes a waste of time. The end result are usually uber grainy videos and crap sound quality that sounds like you are listening to audio from the vacuum of dissolution. I say use at least a minimum 2.0 mega-pixels cellphone camera for any sort of redeeming video quality (if not sound).

Speaking of video recording with a cellphone, people need to stop turning their phones sideways because they want to get a vertical angle of what they are profiling. Just because it makes sense to do that when taking a photo, does not mean it makes sense when taking a video. The video format is horizontal in nature, and people watch videos that way as well. Sure, they can turn their phone sideways to playback the video they took, but they shouldn't upload it to youtube or other sites like that. What do they want us to do, turn our computer monitor sideways to see the video properly? Or is craning and tilting our heads the new wave of the future? It's ridiculous I tell you.

  • Movies I've seen recently...

    American Teen  (2008)  B

Set in a small city of middle white America,
"American Teen" focuses on certain real teenagers that fit those
stereotypical High School social classes from the jock, nerd, popular
girls, etc... Depending on your own life experience, there's bound to
be some things in the movie that you can relate with. Peer pressure,
love life, social drama, parents, and the looming scary yet exciting
next step that is adult life, which starts with what college you go to,
are all present in this movie and just adds to the drama of it all. I'm
not entirely sure how much of what is shown in this documentary is real
or staged, but it's easy to get caught up with what's going to happen
to the "characters" of this "story" anyway. "American Teen" is
entertaining, insightful, and touching, and while I could have lived
without some of the animated "dream sequences," I did enjoy watching
    the movie.

    The Rocker  (2008)  B-

For those people, young or old, who ever wished
to be in a band and be a rock star, "The Rocker" is the movie for you.
Rainn Wilson wondefully plays a "could have been famous drummer" who
gets a second chance at the rock and roll lifestyle, when he joins his
nephew's garage band; lead by real life music artist
    Teddy Geiger in a decent
performance as an actor. Besides following the story of the band's
progression in the music industry, the interaction between the aging
musician who acts immature, and the teenage musicians who are more
mature than him works well in the film. The movie does move along as
expected, and there are some outlandish moments that defies
explanation, however what we have here is an amusing, touching, and
    overall entertaining movie to see.

    Vicky Christina Barcelona  (2008)  B+

Woody Allen directed and wrote this engaging
tale about whether a person could be happy with either a conventional
or an unconventional relationship. "Vicky Christina Barcelona" follows
best friends Vicki and Christina on their stay in Barcelona. When it
comes to relationships, Vicki is the realistic one, and Christina is
more of the romantic, and that difference will become an important
factor when they meet Juan Antonio. Watching Juan Antonio be all
charming to both women was very enjoyable to watch, making him quite
the ladies man but still being the man's man. That's just one aspect of
the story however, as things get even more fascinating when Juan
Antonio's ex-wife Maria Elena arrives on the scene, played with
    unpredicatable force by
Penélope Cruz. With Barcelona as the backdrop
and some really good looking actors, visually this movie is easy on the
eyes, although it looks like Woody Allen likes looking at
Scarlett Johansson a little too much. What the characters talk about is the true
appeal to watching this film, so I really could have gone without the
narrator. Despite some minor flaws, "Vicky Christina Barcelona" is
another great addition to Woody Allen's long running career.

  • The Nintendo Wii so far has dominated in the home party multi-player experience, with games like Wii Sports leading the way. While consoles like the xbox360 and the PS3 has focused mostly on the online multi-player route, it bears to question how viable those consoles are for a home party gathering. Well recently I put the xbox360 on task to entertain a small party of casual gamers, and I have to be impressed that we were able to fill out 5-6 hours of fun.

Those five to six hours of xbox 360 entertainment, consisted of Rock Band, browsing through the videos I downloaded from the xbox LIVE marketplace, Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2, Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting, Scene it - Lights Camera Action, and Fuzion Frenzy 2. By far the biggest surprise hit was Scene it, with Rock band a close second in popularity. If this was a little more of the hard core gaming crowd, games like Call Of Duty 4 or Halo 3 could have even been added to the mix.

It's nice to know that the xbox 360 is capable of providing multi-player fun without going online, and with games like Lips, Scene It - Box Office Smash, and You're In The Movies also coming out later this year, it looks like that trend will continue.

  • I recently visited one of my local Best Buy stores, and there was a major layout change to it. Usually the CD aisles are the first things you see when you enter the store, but not anymore at the Best Buy I went to, as it's the video games section now. I know that the video games industry is winning money-wise compared to the music and movie industry, so I can see the reasoning behind the store layout change. The shift in the market is finally showing some signs of affecting the way certain stores run things, and in this case, it's video games that are suppose to draw people into the store. Imagine that.

Another marketing trend that I've noticed is the fast food restaurants beverage wars. In this case, it's iced coffee. McDonalds, Del Taco, etc... are now offering and pushing their iced coffee menu to the public. It's almost like this is a direct response from Starbuck's presence or something. They do have something going for it though, because I'm seeing people holding those iced coffee in their hands a lot lately. Speaking of coffee, Starbucks have added a few new drinks to their menu, fruit smoothies that they are calling Vivanno. So what's that, a direct response to places like Jamba Juice and Robeks? These efforts are ofcourse the quest to find that next big fad thing. Like years ago when Boba tea was really popular.
