whoopdeedoo! It's Thanksgiving. One of the most abused holidays around. Nobody celebrates it for what it stands for anymore (*edit* see comments below...), as it's just an excuse to eat the meal normally associated with the holiday (like Turkey, usually too dry for my taste), have family/friends gatherings, have a long weekend from work (except me, I'm working for double pay), and have it be the day before "black friday." Just bring on Christmas already, as that's a holiday actually worth celebrating.

Really? I find that if anything Thanksgiving is closer to the actual spirit of the holiday than Christmas.
Christmas is far too commercialized these days. Not to mention the fact that the PC-ification of society has stopped all mention of the Jesus Christ anywhere. Christmas isn't about "Good will to you fellow man" or gift giving as most of the media would have you believe. It's the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ (big hint, it's in the name of the holiday). However Christmas has morphed into the happiest day of the year for stores. I am agnostic so please, no accusations of pushing the Christian faith please. I'm just recognizing how hypocritical the Christmas holiday is now (people spell it Xmas for Christ's sake! How much more insulting can you get than to cross the birthday boy's name out of his own day!)
Now Thanksgiving is a holiday that is probably more accurate in it's roots than all our other holidays. It is essentially a Christian version of the pagan harvest festivals celebrated around the world. You are celebrating that you just made it through another year with enough to eat. How do you celebrate this good fortune? By eating. Technically you should also be thanking God for this since this is a Puritan holiday.
As for Black Friday. Well I have heard it said that 1st Thanksgiving was preceded by the realization of the Pilgrims that the principles of communism doesn't work. That year they gave up the ideals of "working for the good of the community" to a capitalistic system where people are individually rewarded by the fruits of their labor. You can check out the history of that here: http://www.aier.org/research/commentaries/819-the-real-meaning-of-thanksgiving-the-triumph-of-capitalism-over-collectivism. So once again, we're celebrating the spirit of thanksgiving while we're shopping our brains out (well I don't know about this year. We may see the failure of capitalism while our whole economic system is completely failing right now).
well if you put it that way =P
So it's not an "abused" holiday like I posted, but it's simply not that "joyous" a celebration for me to care much for. I should just say then that I always found Thanksgiving to be a crappy holiday to actually celebrate. Bah hambug?
haha I agree with the other comment.
Look at it this way though, college kids don't get to go home/parents don't get to demand that their kids come home without holidays like Thanksgiving. When would people miss having an actual family besides Thanksgiving and Christmas?
