  • Movies I've seen recently...

    Milk  (2008)  A

Just from the first opening scenes, you can already tell that "Milk" is going to be an "important" movie to see. One of the things that "Milk" preaches is to not be prejudice against homosexuals, and this film itself tests your resolve in that by having it's gay characters be very visually open about their sexuality in the movie. Ofcourse the true appeal here is to see Sean Penn's acting as Harvey Milk, because wow did he do an excellent job. You won't be forgetting Penn's character and his performance anytime soon after watching this. While the movie itself can be relatively straight forward as biography films goes, it is undeniably fascinating. Watching Harvey Milk transform from somebody who just had opinions about the gay community in America, into somebody who becomes a leader for the American gay community is quite engaging. The movie is also surprisingly educational, because you will actually observe the political process, and it's amazing to see even Harvey Milk embrace how ruthless and conniving a politician can be. "Milk" is a powerful and thought provoking film to watch, and kudos needs to be given to director Gus Van Sant, writer Dustin Lance Black, and the great performance by Sean Penn.

    Valkyrie  (2008)  C+

As a movie about an attempt to kill Adolf Hitler by a secret German resistance against Nazi Germany, director Bryan Singer's "Valkyrie" is just adequate. The movie has a strong cast of actors, from Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, to ofcourse Tom Cruise whose character Colonel Claus Von Stauffenberg is the story that we are following. It is Stauffenberg's obsession to end Hitler's reign that we are suppose to symphatize with, and overall you can't help but feel the sense of paranoia with the other characters as to whether they will be captured and killed for treason, as they try and attempt this seemingly impossible coup. "Valkyrie" is pretty much a "caper film" though, with the crux of the motivation to see it resting on finding out whether they pull it off or not. While I admire the heart and idea to get this story on film, I can't help but feel like it could have been a better movie. One point that was emphasized in "Valkyrie" was in showing how not all Germans were like Hitler, and they at least definitely got that point across spectacularly here.

    Resident Evil : Degeneration  (2008)  C-

Out of all the Resident Evil movies that has been released, it figures that it would be the non-live-action film that would be the one closest to the feel of the actual video games themselves that the franchise has adapted.  But is that necessarily a good thing? "Resident Evil : Degeneration" is clearly only meant for the fans, because as a movie itself it is just passable and easily forgetable. The fans will appreciate having video game characters Claire Redfield and Leon S Kennedy together again in a story, and the "infected" enemies are more or less what is expected from the game. Unfortunately it's got general issues. As an action movie, it's not that exciting. As a zombie horror movie, it's not scary at all. In terms of just the story, it's not that interesting. The biggest disappointment I have however is with what is clearly suppose to be the movie's strong suit, the CGI work of the film, which feels like it literally is just an expanded cut scene from the games. The character design and animation is simply not on par with other CGI films out there, and this really does belong in the "straight to video" market. I'm still waiting for that good Resident Evil film...

  • (spoilers below if you still want to see the fights)

Wow, talk about your upsets with UFC 92 "Ultimate 2008." In all the big fights, everybody favored to win lost. Griffin loses the light heavyweight championship belt to Evans, and it's a little disappointing that Forrest couldn't defend the title. Evans has got a bright future in the sport, while Griffin is still growing and will make a nice comeback. Mir made a historic win by giving Nogueira his very first stoppage in a very long career, which speaks volumes at what is clearly a sign that all the damage Minotauro has gotten throughtout his years has finally caught up. Frank Mir proved that he still has it in him to win back the heavyweight belt, while Minotauro really needs to take a break from fighting to heal all the damage he has taken these past years. As for Jackson vs Silva part 3, Rampage finally got his win against The Axe Murderer with a very decisive knock out punch. I've always said that Wanderlei hasn't been the same iconic fighter he was years ago, since his defeat to Cro Cop in the fall of 2006, while Quinton has only gotten better as the years have gone by. You know the ironic part of this is? Griffin, Nogueira, and Silva all trained together for this night, and they all lost. What's up with that?

  • When the new year hits, there's going to be a new law to follow that will affect every California driver. Starting on January 1st, 2009, it is going to be illegal to write, read, and send text messages while driving for everybody in California (for aged 18 and under, it has already been in effect). There's a minimum of a $20 fee for the citation, but it's really close to $100 when all penalties are added. Unlike the "hands-free" law that has alternative solutions to talking on a cellphone while driving; like head sets or speaker devices, there are really no easy alternatives for text messaging while driving (besides calling a person on a hands-free device). I'm sure people are going to go ahead and do their "no looking while typing on a T9 keypad" technique for text messaging, but now they have to make sure they aren't caught doing it. I myself don't necessarily like text messaging while driving in the first place, but when somebody does send me a text message, I don't hesitate to at least take a quick glance to read it. Can't do that while driving anymore though, which is a shame because I don't think it's that different than glancing at a GPS screen that many cars have. All my friends and families are just going to have to be patient with me for not answering their text messages in a prompt manner I guess. Honestly, I'm not sure how much of an issue this will really be for me, but we'll see. I might have a future blog post about getting a fine for text messaging on my cellphone for all I know.

  • Something that I've never had or used before is a web cam. Fortunately, the new laptop I bought comes with a web cam, and I've recently been taking advantage of it. First thing I did was get Skype and Stickam accounts, as I never got to take advantage of those until now. With my Stickam account, I have the opportunity to get on G4TV's "Attack of the Show" or "X-Play's" Virtual Audience, and that's something I'd like to do sometime in the near future. Honestly though, I haven't taken advantage of Stickam just yet. I have however taken full advantage of my Skype account, with the most use being that I'm starting to use that to call my wife at work. Now instead of just talking on the phone, we can actually see each other through the web cam. Skype can easily be a good alternative to talk to people all over the world, and I highly recommend it to those who haven't tried it yet.

You love so much about the holidays, and everyone perks up a little from your happiness.

Even if things have been tough, you can't help but be joyful.

  • You know how a lot of people give themselves a Christmas gift? Well, I went ahead and gave myself something generous (that I actually bought on Cyber Monday). It's a Toshiba Satellite L355-S7835 17-Inch Laptop (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista 64bit Premium). That would indeed be a new laptop to replace my old dying one, which is good too since the last time I tried to turn on my old laptop it crashed when Windows XP was trying to load. The problem ofcourse is that when moving from Windows XP to Vista, there's going to be compatibility issues with the software. Sure enough, most of the ones that I actually paid for don't work on that OS, so I had to find alternatives. The past couple of weeks, I've been trying out different freeware to replace the software that I can't use anymore. To my surprise, every software that I had has a free alternative. In fact, I am now completely running my new laptop on mostly freeware that I've downloaded from the internet, plus the programs that already came with the computer. Even something enormous like Microsoft Office or Adobe Photoshop has a free alternative with OpenOffice or GIMP respectively. I went ahead and created a website to list all these freeware that I found available online. Feel free to browse through that list (link below), because you might actually find something that you can use yourself. Ofcourse if you have an alternate suggestion or an addition to the list, please feel free to tell me.
