  • I don't know how it got to this point, but it's turning out that I'm a guy who can't do spontaneous things anymore. I'm not saying I'm not willing to do things spontaneously, it's just that I don't have time for that. My friends pretty much have to make plans in advance with me, if they want me to join along for something. Calling me on the day, the day before, or even a week before, can often make me have to give a response of "sorry, I can't make it" to my friends. That can be a little annoying but it's just the truth. Most of the time, I already have plans to do something, be it chores, obligations, or just any pre-planned things. I literally use my calendar quite often, jotting down things like "dinner with friends" at this date, "go to concert" at this other date, or "need to take dogs to groomers" at this date. Sure working graveyards Sunday nights to Thursday nights makes a huge difference, but that's where Friday afternoon/night, all of Saturday, and Sunday to Thursday afternoons come in handy. Of course that's MY schedule, and not everybody can work with that. I sometimes feel bad about my not being so available to my friends, but that's just honestly how things are. I'm pretty sure that I'm not alone with this "problem" as a lot of people have their own lives to live, and most likely understands this situation. This isn't high school anymore, it's just living the adult life I guess.

  • Don't let your schedule control you too much or you'll end up 80 yrs old and wondering where all the time went.  Before switching jobs I used to be amazed when a new year came around.  Time's thankfully moving more slowly these days.

Every once in a while I have to stop and listen to Pink Floyd's song "Time" so I slow down when I notice life's going too fast again: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/p/pink+floyd/time_20108616.html

  • To counter what I just posted though, these days we have a lot more free time than in the past.  People used to have to work much longer hours just to eat.  Take for example the Romans.  All the movies and shows we see typically show the extravagance and luxury of royalty.  But the majority of people had to toil night and day.  And that's if you were fortunate enough to be a citizen.

  • @darren_macintyre - The one information that I forgot to put on my blog post is that my reliance to schedules and what not is probably attributed to my OCD tendencies. Although I'm not willing to make that as the primary excuse.

We also may have a lot more free time in our hands nowadays, but my free time does not seem to work with a lot of people. I spend most of those free time alone or with my wife. Once again, it's partly due to my graveyard work schedule. Like for example, I am usually unable to go eat dim sum Sunday mornings or have a late Sunday dinner, because of my work.  Saturday works best overall (or Friday afternoon/nights), but there's a chance I might have something "booked" at those times already.
