I recently watched a bunch of youtube videos from the recent "Britain's Got Talent" competition. Yeah, I got "suckered" into watching because of the whole Susan Boyle phenomenon. You know what though, I don't regret this decision because based on the videos I've seen so far, this year's competition on Britain's Got Talent was a lot more entertaining to watch than what I've seen from any of this year's talent competition shows out there like American Idol. Usually I just hear or watch what I need to know about these types of shows through third parties. These talent shows rarely grab my attention, and I believe the last time that happened was when I got the "McPheever" three years ago. Britain's Got Talent 2009 though was brilliant.
Just like the case with Susan Boyle, there were a lot of competitors that had the personality or background story that kept me interested. Julian Smith the talented and humble saxophone player. Diversity, the great dance group stepping it up. Sue Son the violinist, who ended up losing her best friend who she originally auditioned with, because the show preferred one over the other. Hollie Steel, the child singer who at one point broke down mid song because she could not handle the pressure of performing on stage. Aidan Davis, the talented child dancer who really has the moves to show his talent. Ofcourse there's still the "I can't believe he got this far" joke performances like Darth Jackson doing Micheal Jackson's Thriller with a group of Storm Troopers.
Sure this show doesn't sound that much different to American Idol, and just like that show, I don't think I'll really be following Britain's Got Talent regularly either. Still I got to give them credit for the fact that because of the internet (and Susan Boyle), Britain's Got Talent was able to capture the whole world's attention, and not just the home country it's intended for. So Bravo!
