The top 40 music albums that defined 2009 for me, out of the 141 released last year that I was able to listen to. Keep in mind that this is my personal ranking, and not necessarily an overall general "best of list," as I'm aware that music is very subjective. The preference of order is somewhat loosely based on my personal favorites (tastes change as the days goes), as well as my bias to the bands I really like whose music I connect with easily.
- Meg & Dia - here, here and here
- Lights - the listening
- Phoenix - wolfgang amadeus phoenix
- Marie Digby - breathing underwater
- Yeah Yeah Yeahs - it's blitz!
- The Swell Season - strict joy

You know, considering you go through so many albums, I'd figure you'd make a great reviewer of music. At least have categories and the type of folks it'll appeal to.
By the way, know of any good dark folk albums? Something akin to Opeth's Damnation album. Tried to find related music on liveplasma.com but Damnation is a complete departure from Opeth's normal black metal stuff (all acoustic and only straight singing) that it doesn't work.
@darren_macintyre - I do go through a lot of albums and I once considered grading music like I do movies. However I can't be a great reviewer, because I don't believe in music reviews that much. I fall under the belief that music is far too subjective of an artistic entertainment, that it defies having reviews that the general public can relate to. Music is a perfect example of "another man's trash is another man's treasure." For example, some people would crucify me for putting The Black Eyed Peas in my top ten of the year, especially when the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Phoenix are on the same list. I *could* review an album to their specified genres, then compare it to it's respective peers, but then music fans are so freakin elitist about what is considered this or that genre, it's impossible to properly label an album in a category of music in the first place.
As for an album similar to Opeth's Damnation, you can try bands like "Anathema," "Porcupine Tree," or "Kakatonia." If anything else, you can always go back to Pink Floyd. =P hhmm, I think I'll listen to Anathema's "Hindsight" this week...
@patrick005 - Actually right after I left the comment I discovered SplinterSkin... exactly what I was looking for. Also found out the genre's called neofolk.
Gotta find more evil medieval music
Still think you should review by at least giving what the genre is and how well it represents the genre. Maybe say if they add anything new.
@darren_macintyre - I'll consider the music review idea, but it's highly doubtful right now. Not motivated enough to do something like that and I'm satisfied just doing reviews only on movies.
Awesome album cover for SplinterSkin BTW.
