What would you do with a time machine?
That was one of the topics from the Kevin & Bean show recently (*click here to listen to that segment*), brought up because of the movie "Hot Tub Time Machine." As far as topics go, I actually think about this question a lot. Time travel has always been something I'm easily fascinated by, and I usually have a soft spot for books, movies, or TV shows that deal with this subject. Ignoring all the "butterfly effects" or "altering reality" dangerous stuff usually associated with this, who wouldn't want to travel through time? I would guess that there are usually four primary reasons to do time travel. Money. Sex. Changing History. Observing Historical figures/events. This all applies to the idea of going BACK in time and not forward.

Making lots of money seems to be a given to many. You can invent something you know will sell well, gamble on sports that you already know the results to, or buy stock on an upcoming company that you know will hit it big. Sounds like an easy thing to do right? Maybe. I'm a little skeptical that things will really be that easy, considering that this is already a hypothetical situation where the past has changed. So wouldn't that mean that certain inventions, sports results, or successful companies in the stock market could change too?

Sex is a big motivator for many, and in many cases it also has to do with romance. The opportunity to have sex with people you aren't having sex with now seems to be a big thing. People talk about going to the sex liberated eras of the past. That kind of thing. Sometimes it could be as simple as changing history to be in love with somebody else.... to have sex with. It's a simple wish fulfillment to try, but it doesn't necessarily mean it'll get a happy ending.

Changing history is something people talk about as a possible thing to do, usually involving an act to prevent something disastrous from happening. Terrorist attacks. A murder. Altering the results of a war. It's a noble sentiment to do, but I fall under the thinking that things like that are too huge to change. Yeah, it'll be nice if "Sept 11" never happened or JFK survived the assassination, but who is to say what's going to happen to the world from there. You might think things will be better, but how do you really know that?

Observing history seems to be the safest thing to do as an option. Going back in time to witness historical events or meeting historical figures. Not really changing the past, but just experiencing it. This is the option I can see actually happening if time travel was regulated by the government or a controlling entity that is trying to preserve the "space-time continuum" or what not. Seems like the most responsible choice to make at least.

Me however, I've toyed with the idea of going back to the first time I arrived in the USA, way back in 1990. I'll literally change how I handled middle school, high school, college, etc... basically start all over again from that point in my life. Of course this follows the idea that I'll be time traveling into my body in the past, with my knowledge from today, and not my present me being in a completely separate body (although that brings about other options). The downside here is that, why would I want to go back to *that* time of my life. Reliving middle school and high school again? Really now? No, maybe that really isn't the option I would choose after all.

In all honesty, I'll probably choose the responsible option of just observing history. However if I had the option of going to the future, I would most definitely choose that! Hopefully it's a great future with Star Trek's technology and philosophy, and not a dystopian future where bad things happen. Either way, it would be nice to travel through time.

This past night at the Gibson Amphitheater, KROQ radio's The Kevin & Bean show did their second annual "April Foolishness." This year for comedy we got returning and new stand-ups by Jimmy Kimmel, Adam Carolla, Jay Mohr, Bill Buhr, Aziz Ansari, Sarah Silverman, Jeffrey Ross, and Joe Rogan. Once again "Cleto & The Cletones" were the house band for the night. I should also add that proceeds from the show benefit Boarding for Breast Cancer and Camp Laurel.

Me trying to repeat the jokes won't do them justice, so how about just a quick highlight rundown from the show...

After a series of Kevin & Bean related videos, Tenacious D opened the show on video and did a song

Jimmy Kimmel - did Mo'nique's Oscar acceptance speech while singing Howard Jones' "No One Is To Blame"

Adam Carolla - did his "week in rage" the "Easter edition." 3) Why Sunday? 2) Reese's 1) Easter Bunny

Jay Mohr - was pretty A.D.D. with his stand-up, like when he was telling a story about Christopher Walken but kept interrupting himself by doing other stories in between that story

Bill Buhr - had a bit about "rescuing" dogs from the pound and his pitbull story

Aziz Ansari - talked about wasting time on the internet and did another bit about R.Kelly

Sarah Silverman - probably had one of the most dirtiest stand-up of the night

Jeffrey Ross - had a group of audience members come up on stage and roasted each one of them

Joe Rogan - strip clubs at 9:30AM, Brock Smash, sex with underage kids, and watch out ladies for guys jerking off in an "aggressive" technique

All the stand-ups were pretty offensive and very controversial with their material, but that only meant that we all had a freakin great time! Hilarious stuff, and I think this year's was even funnier than last year's show. All the comics were really great, with Jay Mohr and Joe Rogan being particularly strong.

Besides the show, I had a pretty straightforward night getting and leaving there. Everything was pretty efficient last night, from parking, getting to the show 15 minutes before it started, got my souvenir t-shirt + DIY cardboard airplane, to leaving the venue with no hassle. The only thing that almost screwed me over was finding my seat. I was in Seat "101" in Row A, but it didn't exist! At least it looked that way. After going back and forth in that area for a few minutes, it turned out my seat was mistakenly labeled Seat "111" instead of "101." Either than that incident, everything else went by pretty smoothly.

It's April Fools Day, but it feels like I've been April fooled for the whole year so far. I've had quite the bad luck this year in 2010, and with only three months passed, I'm a little worried what the next nine months will bring. Here are highlights from what I'm talking about, courtesy of my status updates....

- Installed Windows 7 to my Toshiba laptop, but now the disc drive only works after a fresh reboot because of stupid driver problems. At least it works after a reboot and is not completely dead.

- uh oh, after over 6 years with my Honda Accord, I may actually be facing an unexpected maintenance issue. I see an Oil Leak!!! Turns out my car was leaking power steering fluid. It also turns out it was my mechanics' fault, so I got it fixed for free. All good now.

- Another reason for me to not be too happy about the rain. Apparently it gave my brown dog an ear infection in both ears.

- I'm sad. A rabbit just ran in front of my car and I did not have time to swerve away. Yes, i just accidentally killed a bunny. =(

Those things happened from January to March. Admittedly all of these are not end of the world material and can be seen mostly as nuisances more than anything. Most of this bad luck either worked out okay in the end or at least were averted from having more bad luck. One could argue that things could be worse, and this just proves that I actually have good luck working against the bad. Still though, I don't recall having a time when I was having this many unfortunate things happening to me in just a span of three months.
