This week, I thought I’d revisit all my Ten Foot Pole albums. I have four of their albums and am only missing one full length album, not including their collaborative effort with Satanic Surfers.
Ten Foot Pole actually has a bit of history and goes all the way back
to 1983 as an indie band, before they got a record deal in 1993 when
they officially took that name.Their first full length album as TenFootPole is called Rev,
which is considered one of the best melodic punk albums around
(ironically, that’s the one I don’t have). After that album, their
singer Scott Radinsky was kicked out of the band, because of his day
job as a Major League Baseball pitcher taking up a good chunk of the band’s time (Scott later then formed the band Pulley).
TFP’s songwriter Dennis Jagard takes over as singer, and people
complained that his voice is too “nasally” and more “alternative rock”
than punk. I actually like his style of singing and makes TFP sound
different in a good way than most typical punk bands.TenFootPole is a melodic punk band, that’s more similar to a Bad Religion or Pennywise, than a Blink182 or Sum41.
Their subject matters usually involve politics, social commentaries,
tragic stories, and the standard relationship songs. These are
the typical same themes that goes along through all their albums.
Their sound doesn’t change very much between each album either, with
only slight differences in them. But they do have a great sound that
makes them one of the best melodic punk bands around, and is definitely
one of my favorites.Out of the four albums I own of theirs (unleashed, insider, bad mother trucker, subliminable messages) I like Insider
the best. It could primarily be more because of sentimental value, since
that’s their first album that I picked up. I did play it quite
often throughout 1999, and it still stands the test of time ’till
today. The other three albums are also quite good, although I’d like to
point out that Bad Mother Trucker dubiously has this one song that really sounds bad to my ears (“Sarah Jones” – it has a good message though).
