Wimbledon was a very
pleasant surprise for me. What I thought to be a shallow chick flick
type of film became a very simple yet nicely made film. Sure it’s
story isn’t exactly original, but the romantic plot mixed with the
sports film formula worked really well. The trailers may have put Kirsten Dunst more in the limelight of the movie, but it’s actually Paul Bettany‘s
character that’s the one you care the most for. I mean, who doesn’t
like a movie that revolves around the underdog that becomes the sports
hero? The tennis scenes were also actually really good and gave a very
believable feel to the game. The visual effects that follows
the tennis ball around was also pretty cool. All in all, definitely a
feel good movie that does a great job at what it does. My
recommendation as a date movie here, and it gets a nice solid “B” in my
book.—————-

The Woodsman proved
to be a very quiet somber film that is also able to be quite powerful.
The subject matter at hand is very much taboo and it would have just
crumbled on film if done by a lesser group of film makers. Luckily the
people behind this film did the right thing in getting this movie
made. Kevin Bacon
did one of his best acting works here and played his role in just the
right tone, considering that his character isn’t exactly somebody that
most actors would like to play. I also liked the subtle undertone
background stories among the main characters of the film, and adds more
insight into the underbelly of the things that happen to regular people.
Unlike Wimbledon above, The Woodsman is definitely NOT a date movie,
but it definitely also gets a solid “B.”
