Month: June 2005

  • Recently I drove through a nearby major road that I've been avoiding
like the plague for months. The reason I've been avoiding that road is
because of a couple of things.  First off, even though it's the
closest distance to the freeway I take to work, I don't use it because
there's that chance to get stuck by the train crossing.  Secondly,
construction is annoying to the nth degree, nuff said. But recently, for whatever
reason, I happen to be led through that same road, and boy has it
changed so far.  There's, like, buildings, bushes and
trees!!!  The road looks really nice to drive through, and I can't
believe how different the path feels now. It used to be sooo plain
industrial looking, but now it has a nice greenish pleasant look to it.

It just made me think about how things change throughout the
years.  I know the residential city I live in used to have a lot
less buildings and homes before I moved in to the area.  Ten years
from now, I can't possibly guess how much more different the place is
    going to look.

  • My music for the week...

Allister - Dead Ends and Girlfriends
Foutains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers
Black Eyed Peas - Monkey Business
System Of A Down - Mezmerize
Metallica - (self-titled) aka "The Black Album"

    Slow and Steady
Your friends see you as painstaking and fussy.
They see you as very cautious, extremely careful, a slow and steady plodder.
It'd really surprise them if you ever did something impulsively or on the spur of the moment.
They expect you to examine everything carefully from every angle and then usually decide against it.

  • oh man, I've been having some really bizarre dreams lately.  All
ranging from simply wierd to down right nightmares. I don't know what's
been going on, but I've consistently been having these kinds of dreams
for the past five days now.

    There's one where I
was back in the past.  There's another one where I was another
person. There's one that involves work; naturally. There's another one
that had me back in my old car in the knowledge that I lost my current
car. Then there's the latest one which involved a killer in my area,
and that was definitely the one that I can't seem to forget right now.

I'd go into detail on what my dreams have been, but they are all a
jumbled mess.  Besides, for some of them, I'd really rather not
share too much on what happened.  Now, if only I can learn to do
lucid dreaming, things might be a lot more fun and easier in dreamland.

  • I haven't done my recap of the movies I saw for May 2005, so here it
is. Despite the fact that I hardly saw any movies for May, there are
some very big notable things here.  Firstly and obviously, Star
Wars was one of the movies I saw.  Secondly, out of all the YEARS
that my friends have joked about how I never saw Gladiator, I finally
saw it.  But yeah, slow month.

    - On the big screen -

Star Wars episode 3: Revenge of the Sith
      = B+

    Madagascar = C

    - On the small screen -
    Blade Trinity = C
    Gladiator = A-

It hasn't been a full first week of June, but I already started to try
and make up for the lack of movies I saw in May.  Here are a
    couple...

    Kinsey was a movie
I've been meaning to watch for quite some time now.
Unfortunately, because of it's limited release, I never got a
chance.  Now that I have, I'm glad I did, because it's actually a
pretty engaging biographical story and Liam Neeson
did an excellent job in the main title role. I've heard some
controversy about how involving this film is in the subject of sex, and
I can see why.  Some scenes and images can be pretty shocking to
see in a Rated R film, but for the majority of adults, you shouldn't be
too surprised now. The character of Kinsey and his relationship with
his wife, family, and friends is really the most captivating part of
the film.  His quest to study the behaviors of sex becomes like a
religion to him, and you start seeing how this affects the people
around him.  My only complaint was that the movie didn't cap off
the end of the film to explain how the rest of his story goes in
reality.  I know that it's a little too common for movies of this
kind to do that, but I was really curious and had to go online to find
    out. Great movie though.  B+

After watching SW ep.3, I've had the urge to see Star Wars episode 4: A New Hope
once again. If anything else, I wanted to see how the transition
between movies would feel.  Keep in mind that the last time I saw
    this movie was
almost a decade ago, so I feel somewhat fresh going into it
again.  I've got to say, immediately from the first scene you can
tell that the feel and look of it was greatly affected by the limited
budget George Lucas had to make this movie. Sure he was able to add
some extra effects and scenes to liven some things up in the special
    editions, and I'll be one
of the few (among fans) who don't mind them at all.  But as for
the movie, compared to the prequels, there are a lot more quiet
moments, and a slower feel to it.  But in doing so, you get a lot
of memorable scenes and characters that have lasted for a long time in
    the collective
consciousness of movie fans.  You also get a more personal feel to
the world of Star Wars, that makes the story more epic to it's
credit, despite the lack of large outdoor battles.
Heck, this is the movie that introduced the world to Han-Solo, who is
one of the best characters in movie history. His banter with Princess
Leia is the classic love/hate relationship that draws people in. Yes,
George Lucas' dialouge still isn't the best written work out there, but
he was able to get away with that more in the sequels here. Watching
    this
after the prequels though, the sudden shift of Anakin's presence to a
more secondary character is a little disappointing, but also expected.
It just gave us the feeling of leaving the old, and meeting the new.
Truly this movie was quite revolutionary for it's time, and it's still
one of the best sci-fi / fantasy films around.  A+

  • Well, this past week was the first week when I didn't get to watch a
lot of my regular TV shows.  So howabout a wrap up of the
winter/spring TV season that I followed along?

24 - Jack Bauer is a badass. Jack's personal life came crashing down
while he broke even more rules to save America.  Great TV right here.
This is probably my second favorite season of the four.

Veronica Mars - I Love me that Veronica Mars! Definitely the second
best new show on TV. Great story, great cast of characters, and the way
they resolved a lot of the mystery was just sooo satisfying. Bring on
    Season Two!

The Office - This is British humor on American TV.  I love it. Steve
Carrell is such a boob in this one, it's embarassingly hilarious.

Law & Order Special Victims Unit - Lots of anger and violence
lately.  Only helps in the ratings though.  The characters here are
still the best out of all the Law & Order shows.

Lost - BEST NEW SHOW ON TV.  This is all about the characters and how
they tie in to the mysterious island.  I'm incredibly glued to this
show, and I'm loving every minute of it.  It's just such a dynamic
show. I can't wait to continue the story in the fall.

Smallville - oh how this show has fallen.  The first half of
Season four showed such great promise.  But the second half was a big
pile of crap, producing some of the worst Smallville episodes I've ever
seen. Season five better redeem this for me.

Alias - I can't believe they concluded the friggin Rambaldi story line,
and what a finish it was.  Season four overall was a mix bag, but it
    pulled through in the end.

South Park - It's only been about half of it's ninth season, but it
looks like it won't live up to the great Season prior to it. But it's
still producing lots of lots and even more "I can't believe they are
    showing that on TV" moments.

Joey - The show just gets better and better as it goes along the way.
I feel that the love storyline bogs the humor down a notch, but the
cast is still a delight to watch. I still can't believe that they
actually made a good show out of the weakest character from Friends.

Law & Order Trial By Jury - Unfortunately, this was a short lived
show that's been cancelled.  It's really too bad, because the writing
is quite good.  Out of all the Law & Order's, this is the one that
    kept me guessing the most.

Best Week Ever - very disappointed with how the show was revamp at the
turn of 2005.  It seems that the commentators are getting way
ahead of themselves and doing way too many unnecessary skits.
Just stick with the funny comments and leave the acting to other shows.

The Batman - Definitely improving as time goes by. They've even made some incredible plot changes to keep the show growing.

Justice League Unlimited - They are ramping up a cool main story arc,
that I'm anxious to see how it turns out in the end.  The show is
    definitely chugging along nicely.

Full Metal Alchemist - This is proving to be one of my new favorite
anime.  There's a lot of satisfying ways that they are progressing the
    story, and I'm appreciating it.

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex - At first I didn't like the
series, but it got really interesting immediately once the main story
arc was brought out in the open.  Can't wait for it's return in
    the fall.

Malcolm In The Middle - Still one of the few comedy shows out there
that keeps surprising me. The season is no different, and it's always
nice to see growth in the characters.

The Simpsons - What is this, is this show actually getting back a lot
of the charm it lost years ago? I'm actually enjoying a lot of the past
episodes more so than I thought I would.  I hope they keep this up.

Arrested Development - Here's another show that's sooo unconventional
in it's humor and story, that it's incredibly good.  I like how
they resolved a lot of things by season's end, but all it'll do is put
a whole new dynamic to the third season.  I can't wait.

Robot Chicken - funny funny funny stuff here.  Definitely avant-garde
in the art of skit comedy and claymation.  It has several segments that
are just dying to be spread on the internet.

  • I used to listen to The John and Jeff show
in our local talk radio station, primarily because of their third shift
friendly time slot, as well as the political topics they had last
year.  But for a couple of months now, I've stopped listening to
them. The main reason I stopped listening to that show is because I'm
now able to listen to the Kevin & Bean show at night, thanks to the wma downloads of the show. The other reason would be because; to put it simply, John and Jeff are a bunch of jerks.

They have this know it all attitude, and they are really really
stubborn about saying that they are always right. They really are full
of themselves and act like they have the answer to everything. All
under the guise that they are just giving us their "totally brutally honest
opinions." Well, when their opinions gets challenged by a caller, they
adamantly defend their point of view, even when the caller has some really valid points. But John and Jeff
would not have any of that.  If they are losing their argument,
their next strategy is to try and do a profile on who the caller is, as
if to validate that the person doesn't know what they are talking
    about.

Recently, I happen to leave the radio on The John and Jeff show as
background noise while I was working on something. Sure enough, they
were have a discussion with a caller that disagrees with their
opinion.  I listened to the caller's opinions, and I'll honestly
have to side with him over John and Jeff.  So they go ahead and do a
profile of the guy, and to my amusement, they got it all wrong!
The guy was nothing like they thought he was.  So what do they do
next? They call the guy a liar and tell him that he isn't telling them
the truth about himself.  At that point, I just had to shake my
head at the fact these guys have a radio show.

In the past, I myself have been known to be just as stubborn about my opinions on
things. But I'd like to think that I was never that bad, to the point
of insulting the other person.  John and Jeff, you should be
    ashamed of yourselves.
