  • I finally watched Ocean's Twelve, and although I heard that it simply isn't that good, I kinda enjoyed it. I didn't enjoy it as much as Ocean's Eleven,
but this one isn't too bad. The characters and the plot is entertaining
enough to keep your attention and you can tell that the cast are having
fun with the material. Ironically enough, the real flaws in the movie
though is that it seems the cast are having too much fun with the
material. There are segments in the film where it looks like they are
just ad-libbing the whole scene and came off disjointed from the
previous scene that transpired. Ofcourse since this is a sequel, the
caper has to be a lot more elaborate and bigger than the previous film,
and in ways the execution worked well, but there is a bigger suspension
of disbelief needed to follow through it. " C+ "

With a lot of high quality serious dramatic style comic book films released this year, Fantastic Four
is kinda a throwback to when they were much more simplier in execution.
Just watching the trailers, you have to know that this film is not to
be taken seriously, and if you go in the movie with that attitude, you
just might enjoy it as much as I did.  The plot is the standard
super hero story, the characters are your standard heroes and villians,
and the logic is just as made up as their source material is suppose to
be. The movie is simply based on the fantasy of super heroes and what
they might go through when they just get their powers. The special
effects are pretty good in depicting the powers, and the human torch
came out a lot better than I expected. So remember, GREAT suspension of
disbelief here. It's a simple movie, but it succeeds in it's
    simplicity. " C+ "

*edit* It looks like IFILM has videos from comic-con 2005.

*another edit* per a televised show about the comic-con, it looks like the slave Leia girl's real name is Christie Marie. boo yah!

but wait there's one more thing.  I guess it would take a girl to convince me to join the oh so popular myspace.com, when I originally didn't want to do that. I had a picture with her and she wanted me to send it to her through that web service. So, if anyone is in myspace, here's my...space http://myspace.com/patrick005

  • Well, there it went, the last day of the San Diego Comic-Con went by
already. It's been a tiring but very entertaining experience once
again.  To truly appreciate the convention, you really have to go
all days.  In fact, it's been announced that there's a chance that
they might even expand preview night for us to take advantage of. Well,
on to what happened on the last day...

So The Rock and Karl Urban (from LOTR) came down to Comic-Con to
promote the Doom movie.  Both of them had a good sense of humor
and were entertaining. I came by to see the Rock actually with no real
interest with the film, but the panel ended with me actually wanting to
see the Doom movie now.  They showed a teaser trailer of the film
and it looked like it could be something like James Cameron's
Aliens.  That's a good thing. Another positive is that they are
taking advantage of Stan Winston's workshop to create the monsters and
not relying on CGI (which they said would look too "floaty").  In
fact, in the footage shown, the monsters does indeed look definitely
more "grounded" to reality than CG monsters could ever look. Now to top
off the teaser, they showed us a "First Person Shooter sequence" that
occurs in the movie and it was pretty damn cool, feeling like how the
game is.  It had FPS camera style and movement, with reloading in
front of your face and all.  Think of it like a really really
REALLY detailed DOOM3.  It suggested that it could be a mind trip
type sequence, so this isn't totally a big diverted distraction to the
    film.

The Chronicles of Narnia panel didn't really show too much more in
regards to extra footage that hasn't already been seen in the trailer.
There was a "making of.." special, but that too was scarce in showing
new footage. The majority of the panel was them reassuring us that this
will be a good film that will be faithful to the books. Basically, they
showed a lot of the talent behind the film, as well as artwork, and
even creature work.  There was even a live satellite feed with the
producer and the director in London, that became humorous because of
the 15 seconds delay. Either way, I'm still looking forward to it.

Afterwards, I went downstair to the dealer's room to see if I can see
anything else that I haven't seen yet. First off, I know I skipped
going in the dealer's room on Saturday, and only 30 minutes on Friday,
but damn, where did all these girls and women come from? It was
literally 50/50 of guys/girls in attendance.  Not only that, but
there were a lot of pretty girls.  With this in mind, it's really
getting to the point of ignorance when people stereotype how male
    dominated these comic conventions are.

So there were in fact merchandises that weren't available when I was
there on Thursday.  I got to purchase the other books I was
missing, and the serenity fan booth had more items to give out as well.

Now if you are familiar with how it's been with me and the Comic-Con
since 2002, I've always ran into the lovely Lisa who is always in a
nice costume that compliments her beauty.  In 2003 and 2004, I've
been able to get some "action shots" of her beating me up, because I
thought it would be a pretty damn cool picture concept.  This
year, I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to keep that "tradition" up,
because even though I saw her at the Masquerade photo shoot, I wasn't
really able to approach her. Well, the Comic-Con God's must have known
this, because I was able to encounter her at the dealer's room.
Courtesy of my pocket PC, I got her attention by showing her the
picture of her punching me last year.  She read my mind and knew
that I wanted another "action shot" again.  Not only that, but she
kinda remembers the one she did with me in 2002 also! With her
boyfriend's help (and blessings, cool guy) we went for her kneeing me
in the stomach.  It was cool of her (and her boyfriend) to indulge
me in this "tradition" of mine.  Hopefully we'll be able to keep
this up until she stops attending in costume; whenever that is.

Afterwards, I went upstairs to the masquerade video repeat, so i can
actually see the show that I missed because I was taking photos
backstage. I took several video shots of some of the performance, but
there was a problem with the recorded DVD and it cut out about 15
contestants.  Darn.  At least I got Lisa's Napoleon Dynamite
    Dance!

So back down stairs, I went to visit Linda Tran's booth again to say
goodbye.  While I was talking to her, a San Diego friend of mine
showed up.  wow, Sundays has become the "meet people" day for me
it seems. Considering that I actually got to see That Pepsi Girl (Mandy
    Amano)
right before I leave the comic-con was a nice touch. When I was
approaching her, I saw her hugging her boyfriend and for a slim body frame,
she's got muscles! Damn she keeps fit. She's a bit pale though, and
could definitely use a good tan. I took her picture, and then we talked
a little; because we all know that i like to always chat it up with
girls i think are pretty. I mentioned that kevin & bean interview
she did, and she told me how surprised she was in them setting her up
in talking to the blogguy. Afterwards, I wished her luck in her
endeavors, left to say goodbye to my friend as well, then left the
    convention center.

oh yeah, for the record, I saw Golden Bikini Slave Leia at least three different times at three different areas of the convention.  Man she gets around.

San Diego Comic-Con, you are definitely my Christmas in July combined
with a birthday gift to me. It was fun, until next year then.

  • So I just spent my birthday at the comic-con, or to be more specific;
"Hall-H" and "the masquerade show." I was at Hall-H for the panels from
9:15AM - 7:25PM! No breaks, no leaving the room, I didn't even set foot in the dealer's room, nothing like that. My
butt was definitely tired from seating the majority of the time. Hall-H
had a ton of great panels set up, which is the reason why I was pretty
much stuck in there. Luckily I was able to find a seat near the front,
and were surrounded by some really nice people that I got along with.

First up for Hall-H, Bryan Singer came by for the Superman Returns
panel, and showed us a comic-con only montage reel of the movie. It
freakin blew me away.  I've been very skeptical as to how this
Superman movie will turn out, but based on what I saw, it's going to be
excellent. Brandon Routh IS a young Christoper Reeves.

Aeon Flux had their panel next, and it showed a lot of action sequences
that had a lot of gymnastics in it. It looks like it has potential to
be really good, but I still have reservations, even though they had
scenes in the movie that was VERY fateful to some scenes from the
animated series. Charlize Theron was there to promote the film, and
    she's so incredibly gorgeous.

Kevin Smith was there for another Q&A panel, and it was absolutely
hysterical! His panels are always the best and if I was able to film
the whole thing, I would be really happy.  I was able to get some
footage from the panel, but I missed recording a really really good
comment about his reactions about the Passion of the Christ, when some
Jesus freak was heckling him for "bad mouthing" Jesus.

"Slither" was a new up and coming horror movie that was being promoted.
They showed a trailer for it, and boy, it looks really messed up in a
    demented way.  Prepare to be grossed out. Also, Nathan Fillion;
who is one of the stars of Firefly / Serenity, is also in this movie
and he is just full of crazy antics and humor when he was there.
He really livened up the panel some more.

"Serenity" also had a panel to promote their movie, and along with
creator / writer Joss Whedon, he brought with him eight of the nine
main stars of the show.  It was also an entertaining panel, being
really spontaneous and all, plus Nathan Fillion carried over his
zaniness humor from Slither to this panel as well. On a side note,
there were people in the audience who I overheard were really wondering
WHY this cast is so loved by the fans in that panel.  If they
watched the show, maybe they'll understand, so don't criticize
    something you don't know!

Underworld : Evolution had a panel, and showed a comic-con only trailer
to us, but it still looked like another "style over substance" action
film.  Kate Beckinsale was there though, and she's quite the
hottie.  The director is her husband too, so I wonder how he felt
when a lot of the guys in the audience kept commenting on how hot she
    was.

"The Fog" remake also had a promotional panel, and they even brought
it's female star Maggie Grace, who is a beautiful woman known for her
character in the TV series Lost. Tom Welling of Smallville fame also
stars in this, but after showing the trailer for it, it still looks
like it'll be your standard scary film.

They showed an unfinished trailer of Ghost Rider, which also looked
like your standard action film. The CG for the character wasn't
finished yet though, so they couldn't show us anything like that,
although they showed the poster that has the image that closely
resembles what he will look like.  Eva Mendes was there to promote
    the movie.

The "Stealth" panel brought some surprises by having Jamie Fox and
Jessica Biel show up to promote the film.  Stealth still looks
    bllaahh though.

At the King Kong panel, they showed the trailer for the film, AND they
showed about 3 mins of unfinished footage of the T-Rex fight.  I
was never excited about the remake, but damn, it looked really really
good. Adrien Brody, Naomi Watts, and Jack Black was there to promote
the film.  Very entertaining panel, with Adrien Brody providing
some humor, and Jack Black being... Jack Black. Oh, and Jack Black
actually did a "king kong" song too.

After that was the Tenacious D performance! It was freakin awesome,
with them playing new songs from their upcoming movie / album, several
of their current hit songs, played the "saxaflute," did a hilarious
"nothing but lip synching" song, some subliminal drumming, and even did
covers of  Flash Gordon and Pinball Wizard.  It was hella
cool, and I actually would not have been there if it wasn't for the
fact that I didn't have to stand in line for the Masquerade show (all
    thanks to the photo pass).

That was the end of Hall-H for me, and I went straight to the photo
    section of the
masquerade show.  This is the first year that I got a pass to the
press area for the masquerade contestants.  The only problem there
    is
that while I have the best possibilities for really good pictures, I
don't get to see the show itself.  Ofcourse the problem will be
    the
other way around if I do things otherwise. So I was at the masquerade
show from about 7:30PM - 11:55PM! Care to do the math there? But
through all that, I was able to see a lot of really really good
costumes.  I got to see my personal comic-con celebrity that is
    Lisa
again (damn, she's still oh so pretty). Also once again, we were
    all graced
with the most popular cosplayer of comic-con 2005, the
Princess Leia golden bikini slave outfit!

Anyways, once it was all over I
went straight back to my last night at the hotel, and here I am
blogging. I can't believe I only have one more day at the Comic-Con left!

     - alright the PICTURES are all linked below (didn't have time for thumbnails) -

  • The third day ended up becoming mostly an all-panels kind of day.
I didn't get to go visit the dealer's room until 6:30pm, and they close
up at 7pm.  The reason was because of all the panels I had to
    attend.

The biggest room for panels at the comic-con is "Hall H." That room
holds over 6200 people or something like that. The first panel at Hall
H was the Warner Bros. panel.  They handed us a bag of swag which
included a Harry Potter poster,  a Corpse Bride info sheet, a
masquerade mask for V for Vendetta, and I believe it was a pin for the
Fountain. Before the panelists came out though, there was this girl
that was dressed as the Princess Leia "golden slave bikini" costume.
Needless to say, there were a lot of guys that were all up for photo
ops. Speaking of hot chicks, the closer we get to the end of the
convention, the more and more hot girls that show up. Nice.

When the "V for Vendetta" panelists came out, everybody were all
obsessed in asking Natalie Portman questions after questions after
questions.  It became somewhat of a joke that nobody seems to want
to ask questions for the other panelists. They even got Natalie
Portamn to re-enact the unique moment that she did in Garden State. Tim
Burton's "Corpse bride" was the next one up, and they showed a
nice ten minute segment from the film.  It looked really good.
They also showed a comic-con only trailer for Harry Potter and the
    Goblet of Fire
, and that contained a lot of scenes not seen in the
trailers out there. There weren't any panelists for the Harry Potter
portion though, so they moved straight to "The Fountain," showed the
trailer for it, and showed about 10 minutes worth of footage. It looked
really wierd, gave a very disjointed mysterious feel, it covers three
time eras, and Hugh Jackson looks like he is flexing his acting skills
    to the hightest degree.

After wards, I went to see the special sneak preview of the first
episode of the WB show "Supernatural."  The show is like a
combination of the x-files, buffy, and Japanese horror. I thought it
was really freaky, and there are scary images that they showed on
screen that will probably stay in my head for awhile.

After that was the Veronica Mars panel.  A really popular panel to
attend, and the panelists were very much a delight to have.  Sure
Kristen Bell wasn't present, but at least we got a lot of the other
    significant actors to show up.

Disney also had a panel, showcasing trailers and / or actual segments
of Pirates of the Carrribean 2, Chicken Little, Sky High, The Toy story
10 years anniversary box set, and a new trailer for Cars. I don't know
what it is about Disney panelists, but they were hella boring to the
point of falling asleep. It just felt so "stock" with no spontaniety,
except for the Sky High panelists who liven things up with Bruce
    Campbell
. In fact, besides the Sky High segment, most people were just
there waiting for it to be over, while some were taking pictures of Star Wars characters
like General Grievous who were also waiting in the audience.

The Star Wars panel was next and it was mostly a celebration to the
legacy that George Lucas has left us with and the future of the
franchise. They talked about the console / PC games that are coming
out, they talked about the company creating "Lucas Animation" that will
release an animated series in the fall of 2007.  They showed a
deleted scene from Episode III, which was the birth of the rebel
alliance, and that was pretty neat. They also had a short 30 minute
film called "The Journey," which chronicled the amount of years it took
George Lucas to finish his six Star Wars movies, and how it affected
cultures all over the world. oh, and I can't forget the fact that the
voice actor for Grievous did a little performance using the voice &
    cough.

After that, I had two things to do. Go check out a free screening of
"The Island" or take advantage of the last 30 minutes inside the
dealer's room.  I actually took the dealer's room as an option,
and it gave me the opportunity once again to talk with Linda Tran.
Afterwards, I went over to get some Gyro to eat, walked around the busy
night life that the city seems to be having, and then came back to the
    hotel room.

Boy, what a day it was.

twenty one     twenty two        twenty three     twenty four     twenty five

twenty six     twenty seven     twenty eight     twenty nine     thirty

    Now some more videos...
    1) a look inside Hall H
    2) V for Vendetta panelists
    3) the Veronica mars panel
    4) a pretty bad ass General Grievous costume

  • Well the second day at San Diego was infinitely better than the first
day, and I can imagine the rest of my stay to be all good from here on out *knock on
    wood*.

I had some pleasant conversations with people at the convention, either
waiting in a line, just walking around, or some that I met and actually
walked around the gaslamp district with. Oh, and ofcourse there's the
exhibitors that were delighted to talk to attendees about their
product, the comic con, and just general stuff. Like a certain Linda Tran,
who is just one of the most gorgeous women I've ever met, and quite
friendly to talk to. Unfortunately, being that she's there promoting
her work / products and not there as a booth babe, she does charge for
pictures, so I'm lacking a photo of her at the convention. You can find pics of her online though if you are curious, or maybe I can sweet talk my way for her to waver her fee.
In fact, combine the fact that you can't take free pics of her, and
that she is one hella good looking lady, a lot of people (read:
    intimidated
guys) don't approach her booth much. Luckily for her then, I'm not that
easily intimidated (okay Hon, you can put down that knife). I better move on...

One of the panels I went to today showed several movie trailers from
current to future releases.  One of them is Neil Gaiman and Dave
McKean's "MirrorMask" which looks visually stunning.  Another one is a horro movie called "Room 6" which looked visually disturbing. But the real highlight of that panel would be a teaser promo reel of "Transformers"
the live-action movie! They showed clips of the state of CG work in
transforming robots today, and some demo of possible Transformers that
will be used for the film. Unfortunately, even though Steven Spielberg is the producer, they got the boom-pow-zip director that is Micheal Bay to do it. May the autobot matrix of leadership watch over this film.

One of problems I'm finding recently, is that it's hard to get pictures
of celebrities when they are doing their autograph signings.  The
comic-con has it set so that noone but the people waiting in line have
a clear view of the celebs.  This is ofcourse a problem for those
of us who just wants to take a picture. Luckily, because my camera has
10x optical capabilities, I'm able to get the shot from a distance; if
the view is clear ofcourse.  Check out the pics below of Margot Kidder and Wilmer Valderrama to see how close a shot I was able to get from far away.

Downstairs at the dealer's room I played this game where I had to
"fish" out a price from a 7 foot tall box in front of me.  My
price? A Pink Belt! Needless to say, I gave it away to the first girl
that wanted it. After a decade of not buying a single issue comic book
(I'm all about trade paper backs now), I finally broke that long
stretch of time.  The book that got me to break it? Serenity. This is the spin-off book from the TV show Firefly, and suppose to bridge it to the feature length movie. I love me my Firefly. Another book expenditure for me occured when I came across the official english released version of "I''s."
I've been waiting for that to come out here in the states, and I
thought the day would never come. In fact, I remember asking them about
the status of them bringing the series over, and I got a "we're working
on it" answer years ago.  I guess they really were working on it.
Excellent. Over at the mezanine section of the convention there was a
medieval sword fighting demonstration.  Surprisingly so, it held
    my attention for quite awhile.

I went to two other panels to top of the convention.  One was
about getting your ideas to Hollywood, the legal steps to go about it,
and the sociological aspects that you will have to deal with.  It
was primarily a Q & A panel, but it moved a little slow in getting
the information out because a lot of the times, the answers would make
the panelists segway into another story that lasts for minutes on end.
Another one I attended was the "dirty secrets of the video game
industry" panel which by far has been the BEST panel I've been to this
year.  It was incredibly informative and entertaining at the same
time.  It dealt with some really good scenarios and explained them
very well to the audience. At the same time, the panelist's humor was
actually funny, so that's always a big plus.  Kudos to them.

Lastly, to end the night, I had a free screening pass to the upcoming Wes Craven movie "Red Eye."
It's a limited seating arrangement, so it was first come first served.
Unfortunately, I was about 20 people away from getting in, so no luck there. Oh well,
I was only mildly interested in the film, since the trailer practically
    gives away the whole plot.

As I'm typing this, I realized I'm about two hours from my alarm clock waking me up. Until my next blog then...

        eleven     twelve     thirteen     fourteen     fifteen

        sixteen     seventeen     eighteen     nineteen     twenty

    and howabout two videos today?
    1) look at 65% of what the dealer's room.
    2) clip of medieval sword fighting demonstration.

  • Well now, what a way to start off my San Diego trip. On the wrong foot
it seems.  I suppose I can say it started with my friend at work
teasing me, but throughout my pre-Comic-Con hours, all these
discouraging situations kept happening to me. I didn't get much sleep
at all, so the driving was entirely intact either, plus the fact that I
was being followed by the CHP for a good forty miles didn't help.

I even called the Kevin & Bean show on the radio in their "what is
your deal" segment, to maybe bring some positive vibes. I got in and I was actually on the air, but as soon as I
said "comic-con" it was "uh-huh" *click*.  I suppose I should have
expected them to hang up on me, since the comic convention isn't
exactly a topic they would like to discuss.  I should have
approached it differently and started talking about the celebrities
first, THEN mention how they are going to be at the Comic-con. Instead
I handled it the other way around. I wasn't even going to talk about
comic books at all, which was probably what they thought I was going to
do. Rejected, and perceived to be a nerd too. So sad.

I arrived at my hotel in San Diego at aproximately 7:40AM, and I was expecting to get
lucky in getting a room right away, since that's what happened to me
last year. Nope, I didn't get a room until 3:00PM. Do the math, and
count how many hours I had to stall before settling in. It was hella
bad trying to keep myself occupied for that many hours. I was even
hoping to catch at least four to six hours of sleep, which ofcourse
would have worked if I got a room right away. I ended up sleeping in my
car.  Which brings me to another point in that I've always said
that I did not like using a valet service for my car.  This hotel
doesn't do valet, and now I kinda wish they did. At least when your car
is in valet parking, no stranger can do anything to it.  Right
now as I am typing this, my car is alone and defenseless in a public
    accessible garage.

There were many other discouraging situations that morning before I got
in my hotel room.  Let's just say that I was feeling really down
and was practically regretting the whole thing.

Thankfully, my luck started changing as soon as I got in my room. From
that point on, things went a lot more smoothly (with only some minor
glitches). The bus service from the hotel to the convention was
reliable.  I did not have to wait in a line to get my membership
identication badge, when last year I waited three hours in line for
that. I was even able to find good deals in books that I've wanted, when
last year a lot of the dealers were stingy with their prices. Things
    were just looking up.

I'll say this though. The dealer's room was PACKED, and this is the
pre-registration only crowd. What's it going to be like when the rest
of the public comes in as well? But then there were no other events
besides the dealer's room, so that could explain the increase in the
number of people. Speaking of people, I mentioned this before in a
previous post, but I definitely prefer the Anime Expo crowd over the
Comic-Con attendees.  I think the main difference is that a lot of
the Comic-Con peeps are people of all ages and ethnicity, while Anime
Expo had primarily a High School / College crowd that makes the
experience feel more relaxed and "cooler."

Things may have started on a down note, but I think things will start
looking up as the Convention continues. Next year, I'm definitely doing
preview night again as it saves up on the waiting in line time. As for
the hotel, I'm never going to assume that I'll get lucky in checking in
    early again.

        one     two     three     four     five

        six     seven     eight     nine     ten

  • Before I continue with my post for today, I thought I'd point out that
it's been a year and two days since I started my account with xanga.
I'm not going to change the design to commemorate this or anything like
that, but I did add a public guest book for people who don't have a
xanga account (like some friends from work) so that they can leave
    comments if they want to
. The guest book link can be found at the upper
right hand side of my blog's header ("-- have a comment?"), in my xanga guest book itself, or
    just click here...

Well, I'm about three hours away from driving down to the San Diego Comic-Con International
I tried to go to sleep, but this is my "Christmas in July" and I guess
I'm too excited.  Actually I think I drank too much soda.

This year at the Comic-Con will be the first year that I will actually go to all the days available.  That's the Preview Night on Wednesday,
and the regular days from Thursday to Sunday.  I've also did the
math properly this time and I realized that I've been attending this
event since 1990, and only missed one year so far (1998). I used to go
exclusively because of the comic books, but now it's exclusively for
the movie / TV show promotions that includes the celebrities that go
with those panels. Last year, those panels were all hella packed with
people, and I guess to alleviate that problem, the coordinators set it
up so that popular crowd drawing panels are now scheduled to run
parallel to each other.  I suppose to split the crowd to more
bearable levels.  I'm a little annoyed by this turn of events, but
I understand that it has to be done.

I've already planned out the main panels that I will be attending, so
if anybody reading this is going, you might be able to catch me there.
I cut out the other panels that I could or would have attended (like
Lost, Justice League Unlimited, King Kong, etc... ) but these are the ones that are definite.

  • How's this for a little story to start off my seven days vacation that I arranged for my trip to the San Diego Comic-Con.  It's a little bit embarassing, but I'm down with some self deprecation once in a while.

I was talking to my model friend
at work, and she brought up my vacation to the conversation. Through
that, it occured to her that I'm NOT going with my girlfriend...

HER: Wait, your girlfriend is not going with you?
    Me: uuhhmmm... no
HER: uh-hmm (with a disapproval tone)
Me: Wait, what do you mean "uh-hmm?" c'mon tell me what's on your mind.
HER: You're going to be on vacation for seven days and you aren't going
to spend it with your girlfriend? If it was my boyfriend, I would kick
    his ass.
Me: well... she said she'll go one of these years.... She's very understanding. (embarassment really sets in )
HER: If it was me, I'll kick his ass, and THEN be understanding.
Me: well, she normally kicks my ass anyways.
    HER: well, good.
    Me: (nervous laugh)

    In my defense...

...actually I don't really have one. There's nothing like being scolded by a pretty girl ey?
    Be merciful.
