    Superman Returns (2006)  B-

"Superman Returns" met most of my expectations. I thought Bryan Singer did a
great job with his "tribute" to the Richard Donner films (from the opening credits to John Williams "superman theme"), that it
pretty much fits right in with the first two films. It has to be
mentioned that the action sequences are only really there when needed,
while the main bulk of the story are mostly exposition scenes with the
characters. I can definitely see why Bryan Singer describes the film
more like a love story as opposed to an action film. There's also a bit
of a down beat tone to several of the scenes, and it can be argued that
it's trying to be a little "too serious" at times.

Kudos on casting Brandon Routh as the successor to Christopher Reeve's
Superman, because of the uncanny resemblance, mannerisms, and even the
way he talks. I wish there were more scenes involving Clark Kent
though, but then this film really is all about Superman. Kevin Spacey
as Lex Luthor was extremely good in the role, and I also thought the
supporting casts did a great job as well (Perry, Jimmy, Kitty, Richard,
etc...). The only person I can see that may need some work is Kate Bosworth's Lois Lane. I think the writers have to partially be blamed
for any misgivings I have of Bosworth's Lois, because I honestly
thought that when she was given the opportunity in some scenes, she
showed that she can really play that intrepid strong female reporter
that is Lois Lane. The chemistry between Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth definitely
does not hold a candle to Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder though.

The special effects were mostly very well done. There were some moments
were it got distracting in noticing how "Computer Graphic" he looked in
some scenes. But overall, I really loved how they portrayed Superman
flying around, and also how inventive he was with his other powers.

Overall, I thought Superman Returns was a good film, but it's only
really a taste to how the follow up will potential be a much better
movie. In comparison, I believe I would still rank the Donner pics a
little bit more favorable than Singer's rendition. In comparison, I thought that
"Batman Begins" is still a better film. I'll say this much though, I
liked that Superman is still the big blue boy scout here, as making him
"darker" as is the trend would have been a bit embarassing. I also
loved how the world reacts to Superman's presence, because he really is
    like a God among men.

p.s. per the previews / trailers we've seen prior to the final cut, it
looks like there are several scenes that were definitely cut.

p.p.s. I just found out that Bryan Singer is gay. Not really relevant, but there you go.

p.p.p.s. Roger Ebert gave the movie 2 stars

what I'm listening to this week...

  • I've already said before that I'm not a big fan of myspace.com in general. It's mostly due to the people in it's online community that are abusing the service and it's system, giving it it's notoriety. Besides the obvious advantage of communicating with people through myspace, there is one function that makes having an account completely worth it though. Music. The music portion of myspace is rather huge, supporting singers / musicians / bands who are either on a major or independent label, or those up and coming unsigned talent. The best part of that is that you get to legally sample full songs (be it 1 or 5 selections) to get a taste as to whether or not you like the music. Whenever I hear about a new band, one of the first places I go to try and figure out if it's someone I would like is in fact myspace music.

So despite my speaking ill about myspace.com, I'll have to give it some proper recognition to it's contribution to spreading new music for the masses.

    An Inconvenient Truth  (2006)  A-

You know how people say that the scariest films are the ones that make you think it could happen in real life? "An Inconvenient Truth" is a scary film that does happen in real life! Barring the political debate about the film's validity, the movie itself does a great job of being as informative, educational, and at the same time entertaining as can possibly be. There are even some very very sad moments depicted in the film about what IS going on in the world today that can't be denied. I know one scene about Polar Bears nearly brought me to tears, and I'm not kidding. Al Gore himself does a really good job with his presentation about global warming, and even has some really great humor to lighten things up. There were some scenes about his own real life experiences that may have slowed the movie down a bit, but for the most part they are there to show us Al Gore's motivations. I'm not one who normally say that a movie is "important to watch," but this film; directed by Davis Guggenheim, IS an important movie to watch. If you've never believed in the existence of global warming, watch this movie and see if you still feel the same way.

    New Nightmare  (1994)  B

After killing off Freddy Krueger in "A Nightmare on Elm Street 6," Wes Craven comes up with a great idea to bring him back one more time in "New Nightmare." The idea that Freddy exists in "our" real world is a wonderful concept. Not only that, but the cast plays their real selves from being the cast of the Nightmare films. Heather Langenkamp does a great job playing herself, who is trying to get past her life as one of the most popular actresses in the Freddy films. Her problem is that she is haunted by Krueger and starts wondering if he really is a real entity. "New Nightmare" is mostly about the suspense of what might happen as opposed to just showing gory scene after gory scene, which works a lot better for this movie. When Freddy comes out in full force though, it becomes just like another Nightmare on Elm Street movie, which kinda weakens the whole film a bit (not to mention the annoying kid). A surprisingly fun last time with Freddy Krueger here... well until he does more of the spin offs.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang  (2005)  B+

Shane Black who is mostly known for creating the Lethal Weapon films, comes back with what might possibly be one of the best films he's ever done with "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang." You've got comedy, mystery, hot women, and action all in one package. The movie revolves around a petty thief played by Robert Downey Jr who accidentally gets picked in an audition for a movie, gets sent to Hollywood where he comes across seemingly random situations involving a homosexual detective (played by Val Kilmer), a child hood friend (excellently wonderfully beautifully played by Michelle Monaghan), some dead bodies, and people out to kill him. What Shane Black does with this film is make it aware at some of the absurdity going on, as well as how it is also a nod to action mystery films that's come before this. This movie is definitely great fun, with some very memorable scenes. A lesser director would have made a mess of things, but thank goodness that isn't the case here.
    * this movie was added to my top 20 favorite films of 2005 *

  • Recently, I switched my internet service from cable modem to DSL. The reason for the change is because the price for the cable modem got a little too much at $30 a month. We saw advertising for DSL being $15 a month, so it was a no brainer to switch. There were a couple of things to like about DSL service, like the fact that it's actually more convenient to install it, and for a cheaper price we have internet speeds faster than what we got with cable modem. For this immediate future, it looks like DSL will now be my preferred choice of recommendation for people looking for broadband internet service.

  • I thought I'd share my friend's story here...

A friend of mine works the early morning shift (5AM - 1:30PM), which means she usually ends up sleeping as early as 4PM sometimes. One day after coming home from work, she was really tired and ended up sleeping sooner than later. At about 7 'o clock, her telephone rings, and she notices that the sun is up. She quickly gets out of bed, calls her work's scheduling department telling them that she's running late, and gets in her car driving off to the freeway for work. On the road, she notices that people are turning on their headlights, and the day is actually getting darker. Yup, that's when she realized that it wasn't 7AM but rather 7PM. She drives back home, and goes back to bed. Yeah, 7PM here in Southern California still has quite a bit of sun.

I thought that was a rather humorous situation, and I think that almost happened to me one time as well.
