  • DirecTV recently had another one of their free weekend previews of some premium channels, HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, Stars, etc... I'm one of those people who believe it's just not worth paying extra for those channels over the "extended-basic" package. Since they were free for the weekend however, I got another taste of what it would be like to have them. Basically, it's just like having a variety of movies constantly playing in the background; oh and some soft porn and sport events and such. Sure there are some original series available, but unless you really really want to watch those, is it really worth paying extra? IMHO, it really isn't, and it's easier to just think of those shows as possible future DVD rentals on Netflix. That was pretty much how this free weekend was for me, have a movie or a show playing on the background, while I'm doing something else, which is no different than when I don't have those premium channels. I did take advantage of watching an EliteXC MMA event on Showtime (a couple of good fights), which I may or may not have paid for on Pay Per View. Don't be conditioned to think that you have to have premium channels with your cable or satellite people, it's not really worth the extra monthly fees.
