Poor poor white dog, he hurt himself again recently. He was in the yard and he got a wound on the side of his body. Don't know what it was, but we're guessing a low hanging tree branch or idunnowhat. The vet gave him the medicine he needs as well as the cone collar so that he doesn't try and chew on his wound. With the cone collar, we've been calling him "satellite dog" because he just looks like one. Thankfully his personality hasn't changed one single bit, and he isn't depressed or anything like that. It is amusing when he brushes next to a table and the cone knocks things over, and when he is sniffing around in the yard he looks like a metal detector. On Monday I'll be taking him back to the vet, and I believe they are going to finally stitch up the wound. Hopefully he won't need to be using the cone collar for too long.

Last week, I talked about how I had to deal with the leftover food in my refrigerator. While that problem was easily solved by just.... oh... eating the leftover food, there's also another kind of leftover problem. Leftover recordings on my DVR. My DirecTV HD DVR can only hold so many hours of recordings, especially when it comes to High Definition shows, and with the amount of programs I subscribe to, it all adds up. In fact, I currently have a little over 20 hours worth of recordings that I still have not seen yet. The shows currently on my DVR ranges from concert specials (New Order, Third Eye Blind), four hours worth of an MMA event (Dream 7), the usual TV shows I watch which is the bulk of my recordings (from Dollhouse, The Office, Fight Quest, to Family Guy), and the last episode of Late Night with Conan o'Brien.
Nowadays more so than ever, I don't have that much time to watch TV like I used to. However, I can't help the fact that I'm a fan of certain shows, and no matter what, I DO want to see them. Spoken like a TV addict right? I guess. To my surprise, there are actually shows that I'm willing to drop, just to add room on my DVR. A really good show like "House M.D." was one that I was willing to give up watching, and shows that turned bad like "Heroes" made my choice of dropping that really easy. Then there are shows I should give up; like "Smallville," but I still find myself following it anyway. I've also avoided watching too many new shows to help minimize adding more hours of TV, like "Fringe" which I keep hearing is really good. Then there are shows that I know will be ending soon (by next year), which will definitely help open up room on my DVR; like "Lost," "24," and "Monk."
Towards the end of 2008, I had near 50 shows in my prioritize list, but now it's about 30. I did cut a lot of the fat that I used to record, so you can't say I'm not trying to cut down on the TV I watch.

Once again I went to support Meg & Dia in the Sub City Take Action Tour, and this time it was at the House Of Blues in Anaheim, CA. Unlike the past Friday night, this time around I went specifically just for them. I skipped the official meet & greet portion before the show, and I skipped seeing the other bands like Anarbor, Every Avenue, Breathe Carolina, and Cute Is What We Aim For. I planned to show up exactly at the moment MaD was playing, but I unfortunatey was a little off because when I got there, they were already playing their cover of Blind Melon's "No Rain." However I did get to hear them perform my most favorite song of theirs; Masterpiece, capped off with a little bit of their cover for Sublime's "Santeria." It must be noted that unlike Friday's show, MaD was not the direct support this time, which was now given to Breathe Carolina. It's just as well though, because just like Hollywood, the crowd just was not as into Meg & Dia as I would have hoped. I'm telling ya, they need to tour more with bands that actually sound like them.
After their set was over was what I was really there for. I met up with the "boardies" that were there, and we pretty much just stayed around the merch room (plus bar) for the rest of the night. I did see/talk to the girls from the group "Millionaires" though, so that would be my (pseudo) celebrity encounter this time around. Now since it is St. Patrick's day (well the night before), my goal was to buy the band some alcohol. First person up was Carlo, and I ended up getting him a B-52; since I was already drinking one. Next up was Meg, who I got a can of Guinness. Then Jon and I ended up drinking two Irish Carbombs together. Nick and Dia refrained from drinking since they wanted to stay sober. Three out of five ain't bad. I myself had a total of five (or was it six) drinks, and in part it's because I knew the bartenders at this House of Blues, so I got at least three free drinks from them.
While all that drinking was going on, the usual stuff was happening, like chatting with the band, I even asked Meg and Carlo to choose between Gibson or Fender guitars (they chose Gibson). I also did embarrass Carlo a little bit at one point when he was joking about not knowing one of the boardies' name, and then I said "don't worry, Carlo does not even know my name." Carlo said he knew my name but called me by another name, which only proved my point. It was all straightened out at least. Like I said in my previous blog post experiences with the band, they know me by face only and not by name, because I honestly never told them my name. Well their manager Mike K should know my name, and I guess Carlo knows now too.
I also took some photos with my smart phone. Actually I did not take much photos this time around, but I did try to take another funny type picture with Meg and Dia (we were going for the stereotypical Asian picture pose). Unfortunately, my Blackberry Storm has this weird thing about actually taking the picture at the second flash, which really threw Dia off who thought the photo was taken at the first flash. Third time was a charm though.
It was good times all around, and it's kinda funny how I'm more and more just going to their shows just to hang out with the boardies and the band, more than I am really going for the whole concert. Speaking of which, Carlo said that they might be doing a pre-summer tour, Jon said he doesn't know if it'll happen, and Dia said that it's not happening. So who to believe ey? If Mike K was there, I'm sure he would have given me a straight answer. Oh well, until Warped Tour then.

bleah. I Still haven't adjusted to my new work schedule. It's funny that it's only a two hours difference, but what a difference it makes. It's true that I get to sleep earlier and wake up earlier than I used to, but that unfortunately doesn't really happen. All it means right now is that I have more time before I need to go to bed, and I'm sleeping in more. Basically, all the free time that I used to have in my old shift is replaced by more hours for sleep. I'd rather have more free time to do something than just sleep though, so you can see why this is a problem for me.
Another thing is that I used to eat dinner with my wife, and possibly watch a TV show with her before I left for work. I had about 2hr45mins with her after she came home from her work and before I need to leave for my work. Now however, all we got is 45 mins. So I'm now rushing in dinner with her, or don't have dinner with her at all, or for some days I don't even get to eat dinner at all. It's going to take me awhile to get used to eating dinner by myself again regularly, as that seems to be the most "rush-free" option for me.
The new shift schedule sucks, but there's nothing I can do about it right now. Just got to adjust and adopt to it eventually I guess. That's life.

This past night, I went to the House of Blues in Hollywood, CA for the "Sub City Take Action Tour," to see one of my favorite bands "Meg & Dia." Ofcourse that would mean that I have to drive through the horrible Los Angeles traffic, but anything for the band right? Speaking of driving, for whatever reason I decided to follow my GPS' directions to get to the HoB, when I clearly KNOW how to get there myself. The GPS got me going in many loops and turns around the city, pretty much getting me lost, and it's all because I ignored my instincts and assumed that it would get me there faster. Stupid stupid. I did eventually get there, but I was late for the meet & greet check in time (BTW, I won a meet & greet pass for this show). I did not really see that as much of a lost though, because a band like Meg & Dia is actually almost always available to meet and greet before, during, or after the show. I can try for the "official" meet & greet on Monday's show in Anaheim I suppose, since I also won a pass for that as well.
Once I got to the place, there was already a decent looking line waiting to get in. The first person I saw, was surprisingly enough not the person I thought it was. I saw this girl walking up the line who looked like Hannah; which is Dia's best friend, so I went and called out her name. She turned around and it wasn't her, so I just waved, said "oops sorry" and started walking away. She all of a sudden asked me if I mistook her for "the band's friend Hannah," and I said yes, and she said that she is also a friend of the band. It turns out that her cellphone is out of battery and she is trying to get in to see the band, but can't contact anybody. We went our separate ways and walking around the building I see none other than Meg & Dia bassist Jon. I called him out, and he actually still remembered me. I told him about their friend, and he said that he'll get her in. We see her hanging out by the front of the door, and it all worked out from there. Over there, I see MaD lead guitarist Carlo hanging out with his family, their manager Mike K, and moments later two white vans drive by carrying Meg and Dia.
I didn't want to bother them at that point so I walked away and found some of my fellow "boardies" waiting by the curve across the street. I was honestly surprised to see them there, because I thought the San Diego show (which I can't make) was the designated "boardie show" to go to this time around. At least now I have some people to talk to while waiting to get in. Two of my friends apparently weren't even planning to go to this Hollywood show, but by the time the line was starting to walk in, they went and bought tickets for it to join the rest of us. Once inside, we got a few drinks, and planted ourselves a spot on the floor / pit.
The show started at about 7PM, with "Anarbor" starting it up. They were good, but they weren't great either. I enjoyed a couple of their songs, and the crowd more or less enjoyed their performance. After their set ended, I decided to leave the pit and stood off to the side instead. The reason for that is that honestly, it started feeling a little bit weird being smooshed in the pit surrounded by mostly girls that are probably around half my age. At least off to the side I got my own personal space. Next up was "Every Avenue" and just like the previous band, they were good, but they weren't great, I enjoyed a couple of their songs, and the crowd more or less enjoyed their performance.
The next band however was one that I was also looking forward to see live, "Breathe Carolina," as they are a mix of screamo and dance/rave music, and I wanted to see how that would turn out. It's a very weird combination that involves synths, drum machines, strobe lights, "emo" vocals, and screamo vocals. It works pretty well though and they honestly had the most positive reaction out of the audience, what with their rave dance floor sound, and even though I could not understand a word they are singing. They did do a cover of Miley Cyrus' "See You Again," which I thought was just decently done, but interesting to hear.
After the previous very upbeat get off your feet kind of band, I was concerned with how the audience will react to "Meg & Dia's" more traditional pop rock type music. Sure enough, the crowd was a lot more subdued with the band's performance. Those of us die hard MaD fans were very much into their music of course, but it would have been nice to see more action from the rest of the crowd. The band itself played really great, and I was impressed with the overall quality of their performance. Half of their set list consisted of new songs, which is nice to hear. They also did a cover of Blind Melon's "No Rain," while great, I got to say that it may not necessarily have been the best song to choose for this type of crowd, as some of them probably weren't even born yet when that song was originally released.
As soon as their set was done, we boardies headed for the merch booths to check stuff out. The first person from the band we met was Jon and Carlo, with Nick showing up afterward. We even saw/met some other celebrity types, like Neil Patrick Harris, Ricky Carmichael, and even Ricky from the band Melee (who I then told how I used their song "Built to Last" for my Wedding - he thought that was awesome). To my surprise, I ran into a couple of other MaD fans that I met almost two years ago, and they still remembered me! Then I went ahead and finally greeted this one other MaD fan who I only knew through her blog, which I guess it's about time I did that, since I always see her in the SoCal shows for MaD. We MaD fans are just one big happy family aren't we?
As for Meg and Dia themselves, they were over at the offiical Take Action Tour merch booth signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. By the time the headlining band "Cute Is What We Aim For" was playing, we boardies went ahead and took a group picture with Meg and Dia. I even got a chance to ask Meg how she is liking the fact that she is now living in Southern California (she likes it). Afterwards, I decided that I wasn't going to even bother seeing CIWWAF perform (maybe in Anaheim), so I took off. Before I left the HoB, I had to take one more picture with Carlo, and to my surprise his sister was in that photo too. That was unusual for me, leaving a venue that MaD is playing at, until they themselves are ready to go. Ah well, maybe I just wanted to get out of Los Angeles.
BTW, I took this night as a test run to see how my Blackberry Storm would handle a concert venue like this. I tried it with and without the flash, and even took a video of one of the more quieter songs (because I'm sure my phone couldn't handle the louder songs). The result is that while my phone has a nice bright flash, it still isn't good enough for an event like this. But it made do, for the fact that the House Of Blues will not allow my kind of digital camera in there without permission.

If there's one thing that I've been trying to avoid recently, it's leftovers. If there's leftover food in the refrigerator, logically I should go finish them first before making or getting more food right? Oh, if it was only that simple. For whatever reason, I've been getting into the bad habit of not finishing the leftovers, and ending up making/buying more food. Then those new food becomes new leftovers, and the cycle continues. My fridge eventually just becomes full, and then I'm forced to have to finish the leftovers... or throw away the expired stuff... yuck...
