  • This is a tree located at my work place. Do you notice anything unusual about it?

  • movies I've seen recently...

    Domino
is not your typical action flick if you are going in thinking that.
It's also not a very straight forward film as it is very much hyper
stylized in the visuals and editing.  You can imagine being high
on drugs when watching the film, and some people can find it
distracting. The movie is all about Domino, and how her life as a
bounty hunter has brought her in a very dangerous situation between the
FBI, the mob, missing millions, 90210 stars and a reality TV film crew.
    Keira Knightley does
her best in portraying a woman who has nothing but a "**** if I care"
attitude, but also someone who even though may believe she loves living
on the edge of death, may actually simply want to live. "B"

As expected, The Batman vs Dracula is your typical straight to video animated film. While it makes great effort in raising the bar a bit compared to the series it's spawned from,
it's still more or less like a longer TV episode. Being a fan of the
show, I did enjoy it and it is serviceable as a generic
adventure/action movie, but it's not really for everybody to check out.

Here's another movie that should bring another best actress nomination for Charlize Theron. North Country
is a fictionalized story based on the first major successful sexual
harassment case in the United States.  It's a powerful and
emotionally charged film for sure, and if the cast and crew weren't
careful, it would have just ended up as an overly melodramatic soap
opera of a movie.  Luckily, I felt they succeeded in avoiding
that. What this movie did succeed is portraying how sexist a work place
can be, and we all should strive to make sure it doesn't get that bad
in our own work place. This movie is also a "david vs goliath" story
about a woman who has to have a lot of courage to fight the incredible
    odds against her. "B+"

  • In a couple of hours from this very moment that I'm typing this, my
army buddy is heading back to his assigned station in Texas.
While these past three weeks have been fun with him hanging out with us
again, we weren't able to do everything we wanted to.  Normally we
would have a Tennis match, which is an ongoing competition that we've
been having for years (so far we are still tied).  We also used to
go bowling, although we aren't that great at it (my personal best is
182 or something like that). We were suppose to go to Vegas, but that
didn't really happen. So what did we end up doing? Besides the Kayak
trip that we did the past weekend, it was mostly eating, watching tv,
video games, scotland yard board game, movies, and eating some
more.  But all in all, it just established how me and my friends
would normally spend our time, "back in the old days." Not bad.

You Are 60% Boyish and 40% Girlish
You are pretty evenly split down the middle - a total eunuch.
Okay, kidding about the eunuch part. But you do get along with both sexes.
You reject traditional gender roles. However, you don't actively fight them.
You're just you. You don't try to be what people expect you to be.

  • You know when you try to recommend something (music, movies, tv show,
etc) to somebody, because you think it's good? But that somebody is
simply not interested, no matter how good it is? The next step you
should take is to add one more line to see if they change their
mind.  If they don't, you should just stop and just accept their
decision right? Well, tell that to a co-worker of mine who doesn't seem
to get that concept. Whenever the conversation goes into either music,
movies, or tv shows, there's at least something he'd like me to check
out. To be fair, I listen to why I should bother, but usually I end up
just saying that I'm not interested.  Instead of leaving it alone,
he goes on and on and on and on why it's so great and how I really
should check it out. For the love of Jebus, I said I'm not interested
and you should leave it at that!

Sometimes when it feels like they are just trying to force something on you, the more you want to just say NO.

  • I got to try kayaking for the first time in my life.  This
excursion was prompted as an activity to do together as friends, since
my military buddy is here on vacation leave.  At first I had
apprehensions about doing this, since I really was unsure at the
chances of my kayak capsizing or something like that. But once we were
there, it was like "alright, let's do this!" Two of my friends were on
single seater kayaks, two others shared a two seater kayak, while me
and my girlfriend also shared a two seater kayak (she sat at front, me
at back).  With a camera phone in my jacket, we were ready for
    some adventure.

Originally my girlfriend didn't want to do this, but she must have been
willing to humor me by joining along. It's not often I get to do these
kinds of activities with her, as she is more or less a "rather stay at
home" type of person, but there she goes proving me wrong. Awesome. For
about the first fifteen minutes of kayaking, we were struggling to get
used to the rowing and steering and what not. Me and my girlfriend was
so out of synched, we were arguing a lot on the procedures. But after
about a half hour, and with the (big) help of actually using the rudder
to steer, we got the hang of it.  In fact, many a times we were so
synchronized in the rowing, I was honestly proud of ourselves.

So we saw lots of boats, some we had to frantically avoid, sea-lions
trying to hop in boats, and ofcourse lots and lots of water. We
travelled pretty far from the starting point and it took us about three
hours to get back (with no one capsizing). I had a little bit of ache
in the arms and quite tired
from this exercise that I wasn't used to, but I was glad for the
experience and am willing to do it again. My girlfriend on the other
hand was really really sore and tired on the arms and swears that she
will not to do it again! In fact for the rest of the night once we got
back home, I was pretty much just massaging her arms the whole time.
She was honestly hurting from the soreness and she was in so much pain,
to the point that I feel really guilty for it. She has to drive a
decent distance tomorrow too, so I hope her arms won't be too much of a
problem then. As I'm typing this
though, she was finally able to stay asleep for about three hours now
without the pain keeping her up. It looks like next time I'm definitely
riding on a single seater kayak. Oh well, at least we did it together
    one time.

  • So Family Guy had a movie, and they based it on the most popular character of the show. The problem here is that "Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story"
is more or less three episodes strung together to form a movie. The
visuals, audio, direction, and story doesn't really elevate the TV show
to a full blown film. The way it's structured though, the bookends at
the beginning and the end are the only segments intended to frame these
three episodes into a movie. As for the story itself, it's not bad,
it's not spectacular, it's basically what you would expect from the
show. It was entertaining and had some very memorable moments, but for
the most part it wasn't as hilarious or over the top as it probably
    should have been. "C"

    Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride"
was pretty "cute" given the subject matter. For stop motion animation,
the folks behind the film greatly excelled in the art form. Sometimes,
you think you are just watching a computer generated film like what's
common nowadays. While there are (mediocre to good) musical sequences
in the film, there really weren't that many of them. Being a Tim Burton
film, there is a very gothic, kooky, and incredible feel to it, but the
real stand outs (besides the stop motion work) are the characters that
bring the story to life. The Bride (played by Helena Bonham Carter) and the dead cast were quite memorable, in contrast to the rather dull unimaginative living cast. "B"

    "Inside Deep Throat"
is a documentary about the infamous rated-X film and how it triggered a
series of events that leads all the way to how sexuality is perceived
today. This documentary itself is Rated-NC17 as it shows scenes from
the pornographic movie, but they aren't shown in bad taste at
all.  The most fascinating thing about this are the people behind
the movie and the whole controversy itself. But the film only covers
Deep Throat to a certain degree, as the true purpose of the documentary
is about how America accepts / rejects sexuality.  The idea of the
nature of sex and how people see it is the real theme of the
movie.  The point gets a little redundant at times, but for the
most part it's still quite interesting. "B-"
