  • I finally finally played Halo 3, on my new HDTV too no less. My wife even said that she's surprised that I actually waited several days before playing the game. My answer to that is because I wanted to be able to dedicate HOURS on my first play, which I was finally able to get. I spent maybe a good 5 hours on my first play and my current impression is that this is probably the best installment of the trilogy so far. This game is pretty epic in it's immersion of making you believe that you are living the life of this super soldier in a global war. The graphics are also a lot better than I expected, with some of the best lighting I've seen in a video game (although I think Gears Of War is still on top in terms of game graphics).

I have yet to play this on 2-4 players co-op mode, nor have I tried my luck battling it out with other people online, or tried the level editing "forge" mode, so my positive impression is entirely based on the single player campaign mode. I did try the "theater" mode though and I am absolutely impressed in the fact that this game actually saves your WHOLE time playing the game (awesome deaths included). I could literally watch the replay of the 5 hours of game time I spent in campaign mode, and even watch the events take place in a different point of view, or zoom and pan around the level, or even take a snapshot of the action.

Halo 3 has a lot of hype going into the release of the game, and while I don't think it completely lives up to the high expectations, it still deserves lots of praise as one of the best games out there. It is afterall one of the few games out there that would make me justify buying a video game console.

  • wooh! This has been an expensive week for me. I bought several things this week that combined reached over $1,500.

    Halo 3 - Limited Edition

Knocked Up - 2 disc collectors edition

    Canon
PowerShot S5 IS 8.0 MP Digital Camera 12X Optical Zoom

    2x - Transcend
8GB Secure Digital High-Capacity(SDHC) Flash Card

    IOGEAR
    GFR212SD USB 2.0 Card Reader

    RCA
DRC285 DVD Player with HDMI & HD Upconversion

    Olevia
    Black 42" 16:9 8ms LCD HDTV Model 542i

Wait wait wait, what was that? Is that an HDTV in that list? oh yeah that's right, I have now joined the growing number of happy HDTV owners. I even stayed awake since Thursday, awaiting the shipment to arrive. Now, it's not a high budget HDTV like a Samsung or a Sony, but it's a good entry level unit that's got most everything I'm looking for. It is a 42 inch screen and not some glorious 50+ inch screen, but I think it's pretty big already. It's not a 1080p unit because quite honestly, besides game consoles and blu-ray / HD-DVD (which I'm boycotting), most broadcasts are set to 720p anyway. Standard definition TV signals don't look bad on this 720p unit in "aspect" mode too (I'm not a fan of the squish look that "full screen" does for video that's made for a 4:3 ratio). I do have to mention that it only has one HDMI port, which I'm guessing might be a problem in the future (works great with my upconverter DVD player though). Overall, I am pleased with my purchase, even if the only thing really HD that I own is my xbox360.

BTW, my digital camera is also pretty darn awesome too.

  • Movies I've Seen Recently...

    Surf's Up  (2007)  B-

A movie about a penguin who wants to prove himself to be a great popular surfer, but through some trials, tribulations, and some new friends that he meets, he learns the moral of the story that winning isn't everything. "Surf's Up" is your standard typical story, but at least it does a good job at it. This is an enjoyable movie that kids will enjoy, while the pseudo documentary style that the film incorporates gives it that unique edge that adults will appreciate. The surfing sequences are also a treat to watch and the CGI work is pretty good.

    Superman : Doomsday  (2007)  B

Parents should know that this movie is rated PG-13, and the film itself embraces that fact. While "Superman : Doomsday" seems like a typical animated super-hero film, the content in it warrants it to be more from what you would expect from a live action movie. There is death and violence here and this "cartoon" does not shy away from that. The story itself is pretty good, and the characters shine here, even showcasing some good emotional moments. I wish the movie was a little longer though, but what they gave us was definitely enjoyable and good.

    Death Proof  (2007)  C+

Watching the extended / unrated version of "Death Proof", and comparing it to the shorter version found in the feature "Grindhouse," I've gotta admit that I like it and don't like it better at the same time. Let me explain. My main original complaint is that the first half of Death Proof just feels long and boring, while the second half is great.  I feel the same way in the full version, but the extended scenes found in the second half though was very welcome. However as a movie by itself, it's really still not that great. Memorable sure, but a great Quentin Tarantino film? Not really. It's definitely in the style of the low budget "B" movie that it's suppose to be though, so bravo to that.

  • Well that was a scare, I though my TiVo officially died on me. Worst timing too, since this is officially new TV season premiere week. For an hour I was trying to figure out how to salvage the situation and even came up with a plan B to go back to using a VCR for the time being. My TiVo did come back to life on me thankfully, although it convinced me to forego checking out some of the new TV series appearing like "Chuck" or "Journeyman" (I might see that online though) or "Pushing Daisies." My TiVo may be working now, but it's looking bleak for it's future performance, and it's a harsh reminder on how this little device has become such a huge necessity for me now. This coming from my digital camera dying on me recently, plus a tooth ache that reminds me that I need to go to a dentist. What else can go wrong, Halo 3 crashing my xbox360? *knock on wood*

  • I'm slowly and surely obtaining some of the pictures from the wedding, but I'm still waiting for the professional photographer's photos. I'm also waiting for the video footage taken, but I should be getting that this week. A lot of the pictures taken using the disposable cameras did not come out good at all though, probably due to the film itself and some people not knowing how to "wind it up" properly. At this rate, it looks like my proposed video DVD of the wedding that I'll be making will have to be delayed until November.

  • It looks like I've suffered a personal lost.... I think my digital camera (Canon PowerShot S1 IS) is officially dead. Whenever I turn it on, all I see is a blank screen with a little bit of static lines on it. It must be some internal hardware problem. I should have seen this happen, because the last two times I extensively used my camera was at the San Diego Comic-Con this year and the last date on Warped Tour. At those times, I've noticed some potential serious problems with it. While I was able to take a lot of photos / videos at those events, the camera was heating up pretty good for some reason, and the flash has simply stopped working at some period of time. I'm going to see if I can get it fixed at a camera shop, but if not, it looks like I'm forced to get myself a new digital camera. I take enough pictures and videos to justify needing a new one, and in a way it's almost like an excuse for myself to buy the latest model (Canon PowerShot S5 IS) of my current camera. Too bad too because the current model I have uses Compact Flash for it's memory, while the newer ones uses Secure Digital (SD or SDHC).
    *sigh* more things to spend.
